3:06 Everybody plays this piece on a 5 String Violin when they first pick it up. I don't know if you can tell, the body of a 5 String Violin is just a tad bit deeper than a 4 String Violin body so that the C String resonates better.
This is a 2 year late reply, no clue if you bought the 5-string viola or not. But I too have been looking into this! If you search "5 string viola tailpiece harp style," then some results will show up. Some of them are listed on eBay, some others on Dov Music. I have a Frirsz tailpiece on my 4-string 16¼ viola, it does wonders for the resonance of the strings. So if I end up buying a new viola I'll be sure to get a new compensated tailpiece as well. While going down the compensated tailpiece rabbit hole, I came across ZMT tailpieces. The C string gets so much extra length that you have to order custom long ones for that particular tailpiece. So that's off the table. But, I did find something intriguing on their website - they claim that after testing out hundreds of setups, Kevlar tailguts have been judged to offer the best sound quality and resonance. So I'd probably order one of those and pair it with one of the harp style five-stringed tailpieces to try and maximize the sound quality. I'd also probably swap out the included chinrest for a Wittner, which is super lightweight, thus also helping to avoid dampening the sound. Even if the 5-string Concert viola outfit is pretty affordable, I'd be paying extra to get this perfect setup. Thinking I'd probably get Warchal Brilliant set for A through C strings, then Larsen E. Apparently they make a viola length E string, which is awesome. Then also a Krentz modulator, which is another $75. I have one on my current viola. Not sure how exactly it works, but the thing is able to make my deadening strings ring again. So one of those on a five string viola combined with everything else would probably cause crazy overtones haha
Fiddlershop There's no doubt that the E String on a 5 String Viola has a Special Sound due to its big body. The C String on a 5 String Violin gives you some lower notes & is a good match for those w/ small hands, but its sound has always been compromised due to the size of the resonating body. What they usually do is make the Ribs a little bit deeper (by at least an 8th of an inch) so that it improves the Resonance. Glad to hear, I considered changing it to: "please don't listen to this on your tiny phone speakers" but it sounds kind of judgmental, so that's where I landed. :-)
that concert v2 viola resonates so well. it was smooth like butter to my ears.
Very nice sounding idea of 5 string viola. I vote for E A D G C
The E String moves the higher notes to an easier position.
I would look to try a 5-string concert viola, the best of both worlds.

What beautiful playing and a beautiful Viola!
Happy to hear! Thanks, Amber!
You should do a video of you playing bach cello suite 6 on that viola
Yes! Was thinking of getting a viola, but a 5-string viola is even better. Any chance of getting a cooler looking tailpiece?
The 5 String Viola has a High E which moves the higher notes to an easier position.

Is this basically a viola and violin in one?
You betcha! The 5-string "violin" is built on a violin body, and the 5 string "viola" is built on a 15.5" viola body.

Can you buy 5 string sets for the Viola or do need to buy the E string separately?
Both.

The 2nd viola sounds perfect for playing the Mahler Sym. #5. And Bach.
