Luke, could you do a 'top 3' tents in each price group (cheap/affordable/top of the range). Perhaps you could do it for other things such as sleeping bags, jackets etc. It would really help out hiking/camping newbies like me....👍
Excellent review, Luke. You brought up quite a few notable points as well, especially regarding the stake attachment straps. I've used the short bungee cords with the ball at one end which allow the tent to stretch and permit air to enter underneath the tent sides for increased ventilation. However, these attachments add some weight. Occasionally, you can find 25 foot lengths of small diameter bungee in the crafts section at Walmart. I cut these into 8 to 10 inch pieces and tie the two loose ends into a knot and the weight of these loops are minimal. These loops attached to the fixed straps or grommets of the tent allow the walls to flap slightly in the wind but are advantageous allowing increased ventilation at the bottom. Without the ventilation it's like sleeping in a sauna on those warm nights. It' great to see Kelty coming to the forefront again with quality gear. Hopefully, they will listen to your advice on improving this tent.
Excellent product review. I’ve used Kelty gear for 30+ years and love their quality, but have had to make my own adjustments here and there. Your input and insight was spot on. Thank you.
Great, fair and honest review. So, I'm the army officer who brings his own tent as I appreciate those few moments of privacy; I'll use this one in our nation's service. Hope your daughter is well with her service. Thanks. Strength and Honor. Keith
Thanks for your reviews. They're clear, concise and without bias. The fact that you take this gear out in the field, lots of times in extreme weather, shows that you have the viewers safety and comfort in mind. You have a good heart, keep up the good work
Hi from the UK, just wanted to say that you do an awesome job, love your reviews and the way you run your channel, shows great honesty and respect towards your viewers, strength and honor to you to sir.
That splash guard being so high is nice, I got wet in a north face once because that part was only 4 inches tall and even though the fly came all the way to the ground , when it's storming hard splash will make it in.
I hope kelty see this video. If they changed those simple things you spoke of and i think they could have a very very outstanding tent. Thanks for video luke
I've carrier this tent for three seasons now. I've been in this tent at 3500ft. during a thunder storm with 50-60 mile an hour wind driven rain. I stayed High and Dry the whole time. The people I was with got wet and had tents fail. Also been in this tent in -5 degree winter shots. Had a little condensation, but that will happen with most any tent.GREAT PRODUCT I don't mind the weight to benefit ratio.
I have one and I'm impressed. No problem with the vents or condensation. If you are over 6' look elsewhere, I'm 5'11 and it's tight. Probably my 20th tent and apart from my Polish Laavu, my favourite.
AH THE MEMORIES! We used Kelty wedge tents 'back in the day'...and found exactly the pros and cons you mentioned. The steps you mention to improve airflow and limit condensation, plus the extra shock-corded stake out loops would lift the performance of this tent without adding substantially to the cost. An issue with me is that wedge tents with two crossed arch poles deform too much in cross winds. The extra stakeouts would mitigate much of that.
please please please do more real world reviews like this. Give the pros and cons after substantial testing like this, this is absolutely amazing insight and content its awesome
I bought a Kelty Orb 2 around 8 years ago for 200. It was a 400. tent on close out much like this one. I have never been happier with any tent I've owned. Fantastic product...I'll never know why they quit making it.
Clear, concise, intelligent reviews! And I like your adventure stories and overnighters too. One of the best if not the best channels covering these subjects 👍
Just brought my 2P version out last night and so far Luke was spot on. White chalky type spots on the rain fly, it was a weather free night, we had the tent well vented ( we did have a section of the vestibule on my side staked down and my daughter had the awning middle piece staked down). Not a drop of condensation on the tent. So I think in the right environment the tent can be a good option. There was multiple area in the tent where you could attatch items with or without a carabiner. For the right price (got mine for $99.00 Memorial Day Sale) this can be a nice tent
I've had a Kelty Acadia 2 tent for years and can highly recommend it! Never had a leak and plenty of room. Hauled it to Indian Garden campsite in the Grand Canyon and it wasn't so bad. Not ultralight by any means, but did the job admirably. S&H!!!
We had that tent and camped in the winter or early spring. In does not breath at all, the frozen condensation was awful, it was like it's own weather pattern in the tent. We had to work hard to dry everything each day and with low air temperatures and cloudy days with little wind, well you get it. It sucked, we sent it back and got a different tent.
It's already back up to $120, as of today. I'm already pretty solid on buying a free-standing tent from REI while they're still on sale. I might eventually get one of those Tangrams from OneTigris, too. Thanks for your honest input, Luke. You and Susie stay well.
That’s a great looking tent for the money. I wanted to purchase one even though the price went up to $119.00 now. Unfortunately they are not shipping outside the US right now. Thanks for another great review Luke.
I got my 2 man kelty military tactical field TENT posted from the states to the UK by a company INFINITY TACTICAL. Ordered it February and finally came 2 months later, awesome tent, if you can definitely purchase 1
Great review. A nice tent it seems, especially for the price. As far as the cons, those vents truly are placed horrible. Have a great week brother. Cheers.
Thanks for all your great reviews. Made me get my tent out and see if it’s all good. Mine is a Big Bear Eclipse 200, 2 man tent, 4.1 kg and has a good cover for the roof vent. It’s a few years old, but I still like.
I suggest 2 tarp clamps, cordage and stakes to extend the problem ends. As for ventilation and being the kind to make changes I would cut a round hole near a lower side wall, sow in some screen and use a battery tent fan to draw cooler air into the tent which should push some warm humid air out the top vents.
Great review Luke, Thank you. I purchased the Kelty Salida 2 Back in 2015 and love it. I paid $130 USD for it with the footprint and it has worked great for me. Very waterproof and a lot more breathable then the One Man Field Tent. Also the vents on the One Man tent are not very good and it has a sticky film on the rain fly which also goes too far down to the ground not like the Salida 2 which has a high enough bathtub floor and a better design in my opinion. In addition my Kelty Salida 2 is a two person tent and weighs less than 4lb. 9oz. and packs well in my pack. I place my aluminum polls & stakes in the side pocket. "Make sure you look at the specs when buying this tent if it says fiber glass polls look on a different site and purchase the one with Aluminum Polls" Just FYI.
I just went to Kelty.com, looking at both the 1 and 2 person. The one person cost is $119.00, the 2 person is $139.00. I'm struggling which to purchase 😫. The reviews were mostly good. The pros and cons that came up, were the ones you spoke about.
i have only bought kelty tents and love them for the price and level of quality I have found the best price on REI . Also love the natural color. I also am a car camper so weighht is not a factor to me. I apreciatte your reviews.
If the fly was higher in the back, that would be fine. Lower the bathtub floor on the door side drastically but keep that part to the fly lower so your pack and boots in the vestibule stay dry. And yeah, those vents in the top need fixing for sure. It's way too heavy for a backpacking tent but I would use it for car camping or something of that nature. Awesome Review!
Your videos are excellent Luke. Having some difficulties personally at the moment and your vids really help to cheer me up. Only wish some of the trespass and harassment laws you have in the States applied here in the UK. Keep up the good work sir and thankyou
Great Review Luke. I personally would not buy it, I don’t like inner pitching first. If it’s torrential rain, your living/bedroom gets wet whilst pitching. If I pitched as one I’d love it. 👍🏻
I have always found Kelty tents to be spacious, and heavy - Great for car camping. I just broke the pole on a 3P Kelty I got at an REI garage sale years ago for $60. I think it had somewhere around 50 sq.' inside. I have always had good luck w/their products but as you noted, ventilation can be a problem if you have to deal w/inclimate weather.
I considered getting one of these however the cons you pointed out in this video may have given me seconds thoughts. Thanks for the review Luke ,much appreciated
Thanks for taking the time to provide us with these great vids! Would you be able to perform a review on the Big Agnes scout carbon 2 in the future? Would really like to see how it performs in a rainy test night.
Im happy with it. Im super impressed with the heavy duty quality and im not expecting to do more than 2 night backpacking trips. I think price to durability makes this a great overnighters tent that will last many many years or a super badass tent for my ground pounder homies that dont wanna cuddle with their squad members
Greetings from the UK. I've been following your channel for awhile now, and really find it informative and entertaining. My question today is what do you do with all the kit that you purchase yourself? Surely you must have a warehouse full by now. Keep up the agenda free part of your channel, it keeps it real.
I have the 2 man kelty tactical field tent and have used it twice, absolutely fantastic bit of kit, I love the brand, got a Kelty eagle 128l backpack and also the Kelty varicom sleep system and have no issues as of yet. Only had the tent up in light rain but seemed OK so still got to put it through its paces in the autumn /winter to see how it stands up but feel a bit more optimistic after your honest and reliable feedback. Keep up the good work and from an English man HAPPY 4TH of July my American friends 🇺🇸
Luke, be sure they name that new and improved model after you. I'd buy one! Also, that condensation problem - sounds like an innovative survival feature to collect water to me. :)
I have the kelty gunnison which is pretty much this same tent. I wish they never discontinued it. But it seems to me that they tried to improve it by making things worse.
Hi. Great episode as always. You have been doing a lot of tent reviews. But... Which one is the tent that you use while not reviewing it? Thanks. Greetings
Luke you should do a weekend trip using your favorite gear in 2 scenarios. One on a hike using lightweight gear and one unpacking from a car using whatever gear you like best! If you have already done these videos drop me a link to check them out. Thanks
I recently found some 20 year old Mobil 1 10W30 in my parents garage. It smelled like bad paint and was dark as coffee. I poured it out into our waste oil container at work. What causes the dark color of these old synthetics?
I myself have the two man version. Fantastic tent, especially at 99$ the price is higher now but I got it in time. Might not be for everyone but I’m content
Review the gossamer the two tent if you get the chance Ive been eyeing it up to get something lighter then my snugpak but haven’t pulled the trigger yet . You do some of the best reviews with gear and I would like to get your opinion on it
I love your great true review's of all item's, We may need to go camping or just a day hike or over night love it. :) Hope you all had a great 4 of july . :) I love honest review's so refreshing love it. :)
Luke again great review. Can you do a review of studio 2 of Sierra Design or the rainbow 2 person tarptent?they claimed to be ultralight. Strenght and honor. God bless and stay safe.
This tent could be good at the mountains in very cold conditions with wind and rain. If the flyer sleeves are too high then the wind would blow into the tent making it terribly cold. Some tents are like that and do not work in those conditions in my experience. In cold conditions it is critical to isolate from the wind.
I only wish that you an buy the OCP/multicam rainfly with this tent. Otherwise, I’m not dissatisfied with this tent. The “Military” version was about $700. That’s just crazy.
Probably as good as cheap will get you these days. Just tough wrapping a 60 year old brain around $120 being 'cheap'; I've bought safe driveable cars that cost less than this! Easy fix to do added stake-outs, maybe could do a pair of plastic slip-in visors for extending the vent tops? Budget took a hit so I'll have to wait but when I get one I'll see about these two fixes; the bathtub just have to live with.
Maybe they are clearing inventory to make way for the improved version based on the TOGR recommendations. 👍🏻😉
Let's hope so!
@el_troutjefe No, I'm afraid not. I don't work for any outdoor company. It just occurred to me as a thing they might be doing.
Onetigris seemed to have listened to our man Luke. The Ironwall has just about every adjustment point he brought up.
Luke, could you do a 'top 3' tents in each price group (cheap/affordable/top of the range). Perhaps you could do it for other things such as sleeping bags, jackets etc. It would really help out hiking/camping newbies like me....👍

agreed. Plus if it's raining and you have the fly open, it prevents some of the spash from coming in that way too.

Thank you, Luke, I highly appreciate your philosophy and approach in reviewing gear and products.
Thanks Luke for one of your best ever product reviews.... and that is saying something.

Really great review Mr. Luke!

Awesome Review!
Love this tent it has gone where no one has gone before.
Thank you it’s nice to know we can trust your reviews. They’re always very thorough and clear.
A good tarp will cure the condensation problem and make it plenty of air flow. Happy Trails
Your videos are excellent Luke. Having some difficulties personally at the moment and your vids really help to cheer me up. Only wish some of the trespass and harassment laws you have in the States applied here in the UK. Keep up the good work sir and thankyou

Lmao. Ok brother😄
Great Review Luke.
I personally would not buy it, I don’t like inner pitching first. If it’s torrential rain, your living/bedroom gets wet whilst pitching. If I pitched as one I’d love it. 👍🏻
Great review as usual Luke. It'd be nice to see a military surplus episode using a recurve bow or archery set. Rock on dude!
Hey Luke good review hope y'all are well much love your way be safe have a wonderful coming in week
Sounds like a good tent for the fall or even winter for warmer climates.

Great tent review, you really nicely explained the pros as well as the cons. 👍
Really like the recommendation part. Just fits with my all around advice: Try to be part of the solution instead of the problem.
Solid info Luke.
Thorough review. Under the you get what you pay for category. Expensive brand.

Hey Luke, Great video Had an awesome 4th. Hope you did. Cheers
Loved your video, love your honesty. Take care stay safe.
Luke, be sure they name that new and improved model after you. I'd buy one!
Also, that condensation problem - sounds like an innovative survival feature to collect water to me. :)
A very full review, cheers. Seems like a not bad wee tent but I wouldn’t pay £200 for it!
Have you done a review of the Salewa Litetrek?? Please do one !!!! Am very curious about this tent and really trust your reviews....
Looks like an awesome tent.
Thanks Luke. Great review. Hopefully, they will listen..
I would love to see a review of the teton sports vista 2 quick tent
Excellent Luke.
Been waiting for this review. Great job!
Thank you for reviews that I feel I can trust 100 percent.
I have the kelty gunnison which is pretty much this same tent. I wish they never discontinued it. But it seems to me that they tried to improve it by making things worse.
Luke you should open a manufactured design tent company !
Hi. Great episode as always. You have been doing a lot of tent reviews. But... Which one is the tent that you use while not reviewing it? Thanks. Greetings

I waited to late😃 I'm still waiting on the Coleman tents reveiw🙂
Another great review Luke! In your opion, how does this tent & its 2-person counterpart compare to the Northface's Stormbreaker equivalents?
Kelty does listen and will address flaws
I recently found some 20 year old Mobil 1 10W30 in my parents garage. It smelled like bad paint and was dark as coffee. I poured it out into our waste oil container at work. What causes the dark color of these old synthetics?

Could you please do a review of the Vargo two person tent.. it's seems like a good buy... Cheers
great review. not a tent for me but at least I know the pros and cons of this tent..
Good honest review.

Some tents are like that and do not work in those conditions in my experience. In cold conditions it is critical to isolate from the wind.
Good review! 2 tarp clips would allow you to add some guy lines to the sides of the rain fly.
Black binder clips work too
@@lebowskiunderachiever3591 Yeah. Well, thats just like, uh, you know...your opinion, man. (Best movie ever 😂)
i was just rewatching the videos on this tent from last year, weird.
Did they close them out? Not seeing this model on their site.
Found it - in the "sale" link. $119 today.
Kelty link not working for me- nice video Luke
And they raised the sale price on this and the two man version $20 bucks on each of them
Thanks luke👍
The link is broken
Thank u Luke. Again impressive review
I only wish that you an buy the OCP/multicam rainfly with this tent. Otherwise, I’m not dissatisfied with this tent. The “Military” version was about $700. That’s just crazy.
I wish more vestibules were like this one, as a standard.
Reminds me of the one person combat tent..
What tent do you recommend as the best 1-2 person backpack tent for hot and rainy weather?
AS USUAL, EXCELLENT, DETAILED, UNBIAS REVIEW !
Take a drink every time Luke says "and whatnot"
Probably as good as cheap will get you these days. Just tough wrapping a 60 year old brain around $120 being 'cheap'; I've bought safe driveable cars that cost less than this! Easy fix to do added stake-outs, maybe could do a pair of plastic slip-in visors for extending the vent tops? Budget took a hit so I'll have to wait but when I get one I'll see about these two fixes; the bathtub just have to live with.
Overall what’s your favorite Shelter?
404 on the page for this tent on kelty.com. :( I went to pick one up and I think I've missed out already.
