  • The Speaking Gifts of the Spirit are sometimes referred to as Manifestation Gifts. To understand more about these gifts let’s talk about what they are not. They are not a sign of salvation. Not the Holy Spirit. Not the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Not based on an individual’s spirituality. Not for the benefit of the one manifesting the gift. Not natural talents or abilities. Not planned or rehearsed.
Why use Spiritual Gifts? Spiritual gifts turn us from a spectator into a ministry participator. They enable all Christians to have a ministry to others. In particular, the gift of Different Kinds of Tongues is the special ability the Holy Spirit gives to speak to God in an unknown language and/or to receive and communicate an immediate message of God to people through divinely anointed words in an unknown language. It is Spirit-inspired speaking in which the conscious mind plays no part.
There are at least four kinds of tongues mentioned in the Bible. The baptism in the Holy Spirit. The ability to speak in a foreign language with which the speaker in not familiar, but which is understood by the hearers. A prayer language. And the gift of different kinds of tongues for public ministry, which we will talk more in depth about.
The gift of different kinds of tongues for public ministry is used to bring praise to God. It is used to edify the church. And it used to be a sign of judgment against unbelievers. These gifts are for the church today. 1 Corinthians 14 explains church use of the gifts. Stay tuned for the next session, Understanding the Speaking Gifts.

There is absolutely nothing mysterious about Biblical "tongues" - and there is only *one* type - when referring to something spoken, they are nothing more than real, rational language(s); usually, but not always, unknown to those listening to them, but always known by the speaker(s) - it’s their native language (in some cases, it is a language the speaker has learned). Indeed, there are absolutely _no_ Biblical references to “tongues” that do not refer to, and cannot be explained in light of, real rational language(s),
‘Tongues’ (read, *‘languages’* ) - the divine gift, is the God/Holy Spirit given ability to effortlessly learn to speak and be understood through real-language barriers. It is not xenoglossy (as many people incorrectly assume), nor is it the self-created non-cognitive non-language utterance of what certain Christian denominations are producing today (modern tongues-speech).
_Nowhere_ in the Bible is modern tongues-speech advocated or evidenced.

Thanks for responding. In 1 Corinthians 14 the Apostle Paul addresses the use of an unknown tongue during a church service.
1 CORINTHIANS 14:13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.
      • Paul says when I pray in a tongue, my spirit benefits but not my mind because it does not understand the words. During a church service Paul encouraged believers to pray and sing in tongues for their personal edification but said that it was necessary to pray and sing the understanding so that anyone listeners could also understand what was said and be edified. For this reason, a person who speaks in tongues should pray for the ability to interpret.
