What to do on Samothrace
Winged Victory - Nike of Samothrace
In the Louvre, Paris, the Winged Victory of Samothrace stands tall and commanding, carved in Parian marble; wings stretched out in the exuberant act of rejoicing; the unbelievable details, the creases and folds in her linen tunic admired by all who see her. On the island from where she came, you feel the very same elemental forces that went into her creation and also inspired a more recent symbol of international pedigree, the Nike logo.
Sanctuary of the Great Gods
As you enter today’s archaeological site of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, your initiation begins. It is said Gods of all descriptions, from home and further afield, concentrated their mystic energies on this one spot. And so, naturally enough, it was right here that enigmatic rites and rituals were performed in their honour. The deities made no distinctions among their earthbound acolytes; slave, king or queen, all were equal in their eyes and all passed through the Initiation.
Traditional Hora
Hora, hidden from the pirates and the winds in a valley below Mount Saos, treats you to its traditional imagery and authentic beauty. Tiled roofs, light bathing the narrow, winding streets and, above the rooftops, the stonework makes an excellent shield against fierce winds that sometimes whip up from the surrounding Northern Aegean.
Secret treat: a swim in the waterfalls
Are you ready to discover the hidden secrets of Mount Saos? In Samothrace you’ll find dozens of streams and water rapids. There are dense forest, sweeping planes, an enchanting network of pathways and countless waterfalls and hot springs hidden within the lush vegetation. Follow the sound of the water falling and you’ll happen upon a fairy tale.
The water creates natural pools that the locals call vathres. You will not be able to resist a cool, refreshing dip. It is a one-of-a-kind experience.
Hidden gems of Samothrace
If you love outdoor activities and wilderness adventures, this island is for you. Hiking, climbing and endless discovery await you. At 1,600m above sea level, you can climb to the moon; Mount Saos’s peak, Fengari, shares its name with the Greek word for moon. Remember Samothrace is a place of raw beauty and you must keep a wary eye out for some of the inherent hazards in such an environment, especially sudden changes in the weather.
The beaches of Samothrace
Not so well known but certainly not to be found wanting when it comes to natural beauty. Among the standout beaches are Pahia Ammos, with its golden sand and crystal-clear water; the exotic Vatos, with its plane trees and cold waters; Kremasto, with its waterfall that froths into the sea and Kipo beach, with its grey-black pebbles.
Samothrace (Samothraki) is one of the most rugged Greek islands, with Mt. Saos rising to 1,611 m.
It was the home of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, site of important Hellenic and pre-Hellenic religious ceremonies, the Samothracian Mysteries.
The ancient city, the ruins of which are called Palaeopoli ("old city"), was situated on the north coast. Considerable remains still exist of the ancient walls, which were built in massive Cyclopean style, as well as of the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, where mysterious rites (Samothracian Mysteries) took place which were open to both slaves and free people (similar to the Eleusinian Mysteries).
Some lucky ones that visit during April or October and November can enjoy privacy, as they will be so alone there that could practically may swim naked as if it was a nudist beach without anyone noticing!
