Payakumbuh city is located in a highland area which is part of the Bukit Barisan. Situated at the foot of Mount Sago, the city's landscape varies in height. The topography of the city area consists of hills with an average height of 514 m above sea level. Its territory is traversed by three rivers, namely the Batang Agam, Batang Lampasi and Batang Sinama. The average air temperature ranges from 26 °C with humidity between 45-50%.
Payakumbuh is about 30 km from the Bukittinggi City or 120 km from the Padang City and 188 km from the Pekanbaru City. The city's administrative area is surrounded by the Fifty Cities District. With an area of ​​80.43 km² or equivalent to 0.19% of the area of ​​West Sumatra, Payakumbuh is the third largest city in West Sumatra. This city was once the largest city in 1970, before the expansion of the administrative area of ​​Padang City and Sawahlunto City. The Sawahlunto City, which in 1970 was the smallest city with an area of ​​6.3 km², was expanded to 273.45 km² or an increase of 43.4 times from before, while the city of Padang was expanded to 694.96 km² and at the same time became the largest city in Sumatra. West. This expansion caused Sawahlunto to become the second largest city and Payakumbuh fell to the third largest in West Sumatra.
