  • The Flag of the United State of America is one of the most recognisable things on Planet Earth (and also the moon). But when people call the flag “the Star-spangled banner” that is not quite right.

While the US flag looks different today, note that our flag since the beginning of the republic automatically changes each time a new state is added.
A new star is added for each member state, and originally they tried doing that with the stripes, but it was a problem, so we moved it back to 13, one for each original colony.
So it is organically the same flag, though its appearance is obviously different. Our current flag is different than it was in WWII, which is different from the Spanish American War, which is different than the Civil War, which is different than the War of 1812, which is different than the Revolution. It is all the Star Spangled Banner though.

Singing only the first verse of the Star-Spangled Banner poem has been the norm even before radio broadcasts were common and TV broadcasts existed. And most traditional songs have more verses than are normally sung, (The Battle Hymn of the Republic, for instance, has 6 official verses, of which the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th are most commonly sung) it’s part of why verses exist-to be natural stopping points so you can adapt the length to the situation. You could even say that while the official US Code just says “The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem” the composition they are referring to is the FIRST VERSE of the song/first stanza of the poem, and that verse, while not the entire poem or song, is the entire Anthem.
There has in the past been a-not super popular, but still extant-push to make the national anthem the SECOND verse, because it says more about what Mr. Key loves and admires about the US, not just narratively describing the situation.

Years later, after getting back to the Allied side he was shipped home. He married, had 4 children, and never talked about the war again. On the 50th anniversary of D-day our youngest daughter asked if she could call him and talk about WWII. I told her yes so she did and he told her everything. He was deployed in either the 2nd or 3rd wave. He and his fellow soldiers walked to shore on the debris and bodies of soldiers who had drowned due to the weight of their packs and that they had disembarked too far out. My dad lived to see the D-day Memorial built outside Bedford, VA. In the area where he was born and raised. My dad was VERY patriotic and taught us to be also.

I used to have a postcard with the banner on it, or should I say, what's left of it after the British shot about half of it away. What impressed me is how large it is. There were people standing in front of it and the wall behind it was painted to fill the missing parts. Without those people standing there, one would have no idea how large it was.

Its been co-opted by so many different groups that try to rally support by using its image and try to interpret the message of why the bell is cracked and it just honestly ruined the image of the bell to a lot of people, plus you have a insurance company that uses the image of the bell and it’s like I don’t want to think of being forced to pay car insurance while looking at a symbol of liberty 😂
The flag is much more symbolic as it is a direct tie to the conflict and was the flag mentioned so reverently in the anthem.
