Thanks for another great video Wes. Back in the early 70's, the Grecian was my first deep water wreck dive. Those were in the days before the sanctuary was created and i suppose, that we were part of why that happened. I do remember going down the line and as I was suspended above her, she was still intact. The Forecastle and pilot house were blown off and there was a great gaping hole where they once were. On the bow however, the spare anchor and the windless were still present. After nearly 50 years, I still remember diving that wreck.
Neat video Wes. In the video you say how quickly the ship sank.. And to this day it can still make swift changes. I first dove on this ship in either 2007 or 8, and most of the decks were still somewhat intact enough to swim through. Fast forward to either 2013 or 14, on a revisit dive I found that most of the front decking has collapsed.. I am glad that I was able to get pictures before the change.. I was told by Alpena museum archaeologist Pat Labadie that our Michigan Winters are taking its toll on Grecian. Hopefully it will be able to be enjoyed by many more divers before it finally collapses... Looking forward to your next video good Sir.
You are a wealth of knowledge and we appreciate all the time you invest in these videos. Are you doing any public presentations or meet and greets this summer?
Awesome story Wes, I’m so glad that your video popped up in my RUclips feed yesterday! As I have Visited the Great Lakes Ship Wreck Museum (in Alpena MI) many times (before Covid) I miss the time that I had spent there. I heard from my Daughter that they are still closed to the public as of two-three weeks ago. Due to Covid restrictions. I hope that they will re- open soon! This Boat Nerd needs a little fix of shipwreck lore...
@@authorwes And I want to see the Windlass again ! I’m so happy that what I Drew to scale was created by the guys who did it from Wood. I had drawn it to be made on a steel bed and wheels to have it semi mobile, but the guys who ever they are / were built it totally out of wood! It gives me great pride to show it off to friends and family when they come up to visit! When I had drawn it and priced the steel, I know Wayne Lasardi about dropped his jaw off he informed me that they had zero budget for it! I laughed back at him, and said “ Oh just like the Michigan Army National Guard, we do more with less than anyone, any day, and any where, and create miracles for less than a cup of coffee! “ Sometimes I really miss my times in the MIARNG. We built stuff we repaired stuff, we made stuff out of next to nothing! And we trained... I started as a Mechanic and ended as a senior Supply NCO, 17 great years then the last 3 were the worst! 20 years and done! With with whats going on in Eastern Europe right now, I can only imagine how much stress is going on. We have partnered with Latvia for probably coming up on 30 years now. And I know that they are all (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) nervous at what may happen, Poland, too is not out of the shadow of the old Soviet Block. I was in Germany when the wall came down and I wish that people would understand what they know nothing about from that time. It was normal in East Germany to have to stand in lines for hours to get a loaf of bread, a village some 15 Kilometers away from my place in Wildflecken was cut in half, and think about this. One or two telephones were all that Village had for the civilians to use and in the surrounding towns on the West German side a village of 300 probably had 450 telephones with Businesses and private phones. The cars that they drove they had to wait 12-15 years to get, a 2cycle 23 or 28 horsepower stinking smoking P.O.S. That doors would open as they drove on roads 10 times worse than Detroit Area streets after spring thaw... I rode on them in July of 1990 with my Then Future Brother in law... That’s just a few examples. We don’t know how good we have it in the USA and al we hear is people complaining about how bad they got it. I’m ashamed of most Americans! They can’t even do as they are Told for their own Health and Safety... like put on a dam mask it’s not going to hurt you! Except for your Pride maybe, and what your Facebook frienemies think should not matter to you in the least bit! Lastly I seemed to get sick 3-5 times a year... so far in this last two years I’ve got one Cold back in February of 2021, and one of our kids got sick and brought it home... ya think it was because I wore a mask in public??? Nah probably all the hand washing and sanitizer I’ve been using ...
Good question! They are indeed "partly" a hold over, however, the primary purpose is to hold the mast lights as high as possible. The higher the lights the greater the distance from which they can be seen.
Thank you Wes for the informative history
My pleasure!!
Awesome video! Love the narration, maps, drawings, everything!!
Glad to hear it!
7:16 i'm so thankful to hear that
It's always better when everyone survives.
Always enjoyable and informative! Thanks Wes.

Thank you for the vid. Very interesting, the crew had some luck that there were other ships around to help.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great website lots of stuff there
Thank you.
Very interesting, Wes. (As usual) What was the purpose of the tall masts on these boats? Surely not a holdover from sailing days.
Good question! They are indeed "partly" a hold over, however, the primary purpose is to hold the mast lights as high as possible. The higher the lights the greater the distance from which they can be seen.
Have you ever considered doing videos on the old Great Lakes passenger steamers ?
Yes
The R J Hackett definitely left a Legacy on the Great Lakes. I mean, The DESIGHN is really nice. Anyways, very interesting history.
Thanks for watching!
I thought Thunder Bay is on Lake Superior?
It is... but there's another one on Lake Huron. The Superior Thunder Bay is Canadian, the Huron is U.S.
Wow
