@@bobfg3130 While I have a soft spot for applying historical context to modern scenarios there is a distinction that has to be made here. Most common people do not aspire to look like they come from old money families the way they did in the Gilded Age. Most of us lower classes are much more inspired by musicians, actors, and celebrities as well as "new money" individuals like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Evan Spiegel, and Elon Musk than we are by "old money" people from the Murdoch, Maxwell, Sulzberger, and Redstone families satirized in Succession. And even in this set, Murdoch's former wives Jerry Hall and Wendy Deng both have been seen with Hermes bags. It is true most wealthy people (and common people too) will not choose to deck themselves out in logos and bling, but the idea that the old set are completely impervious to anything overtly luxurious in their fashion isn't true either.
Ralph Lauren actually makes good stuff. I would only buy their clothes with the small logos though. If you’re really wealthy then you know you have it. Also if you are really wealthy then you can afford to have your clothes custom made for you like John Lobb, Hunstman, Anderson & Sheppard, etc. There are also a lot of “blue collar millionaires” that own trucking companies, construction companies, or something like that and are loaded with money but they have no need for fancy clothes. When I see someone with a Louis Vuitton bag, I just think it was a dumb purchase and more than likely they don’t have the financial intelligence or self discipline to build wealth. I just shake my head in silence. Don’t buy clothing you don’t need but if you do need something then buy for quality and durability so you don’t have to buy it again or at least not for a long time. Some of the nicer brands have a service where you can send in the clothes and get them repaired when they wear out.
I have noticed that expensive clothes are a nicer colour dye. I try to buy in the sales as i don't have much but i still prefer quality over quantity as there may be longevity in the purchase. Also, preloved accessories and clothes are more justifiable. I like some luxury brands but i like high street too!
I think there are a few misconceptions ... 1) Designer items don't all have labels/branding on it. Of course many do and there is that market for it. But there is plenty that doesn't and people buy it for the cuts, fabrics, colours, design etc. I have many Gucci, Margiela, Saint Laurent, Dior etc pieces and none of them have a visible logo. I but them for the design, fabric, heritage, feel etc. So bracketing all designer buyers as logo chasers is wrong. 2) Who ultimately wants to look like the bland 'genuine' mega rich anyway, it's all very basic and 'boring' to be honest. I think people enjoy that more fun exuberant Gucci, Chanel zone anyway, it's more fun to be honest :) rather than the more stoic and staid Loro Piana in browns, neutrals etc. ie people buy into what excites them, what feels great for them, and sure a little showing off too perhaps. 3) Which leads me to the third point, which is that I don't necessarily think people are trying to look like the mega uber rich as all these youtube videos suppose, but instead are trying (and succeeding) to look like the 'middle' designer customer, ie the Gucci, Dior, Chanel, LV audience. They know they are the upper middle or aspirational working class grouping who just likes the little luxuries in life. To belong to the uber rich takes way more than clothes anyway, it needs the full package, the bentley, the exquisite jewellery, the mansion, the mannerisms, the similar upper circle around them etc.
Yeah but no, here's the thing many luxury brands from armani to dior, to ralph lauren to margiela cannot hold to the banner of heritage, quality and prestige to sell their pieces when organisations and investigations such as BoF and Good on You have rigorous evidence of their exploitation of garment workers (including in Italy) in unsafe conditions that extend to forced labour and child labour. The equivalent low ratings can also be found for environmental practices. I mean if we are looking at purchasing quality, sustainable, ethical fashion then forget fashion labels like gucci etc and look at independent ethical businesses like Reformation or Fair Trade Winds
I think that generalizing all lower income people buying luxury to look rich is very pretentious. I can only speak for myself. My salary is considered a low-income one, and yet I buy luxury goods (most of them are second-hand for sustainability reasons) but I don't like the all over monogram bags or logo t-shirts and I buy the more natural low key items, some people simply wish to have these otems because of quality and history of the brand and I think that paying 9k for a coat is ridiculous!!!!, so the rich buy "quite luxury" fashion, but they drive the very fleshy cars and huge houses, so to each their own. People need to stop focusing on what others are doing or buying and concentrate on their own lives. There are worst things happening in the world than who bought LV or Loro Piana. Just my opinion.
She is just exposing the brands to the masses and illustrating how it is your low self esteem that has a low income person buying items prices for affluent people. That's why America is dying
@Meand1209 And how do you know I don't invest? And I'm not saying that buying luxury is an investment. I invest, travel, pay my bill while I purchase luxury, I budget and do it in a calculated way.
You're right. The only exception is collectors, who see designer items as art. I have some pieces that I just love to display in my closet and enjoy looking at them when I get dressed. I cary Mansur Gavriel bags daily and those do not have a logo or a hefty price tag.
Wearing branded clothes is gauche; I like nice clothes but fit is more important than the brand. That being said, the people who are shopping at Chanel and Hermes are not poor people either, just people who wish to dress wearing signs of their wealth, like wearing a Rolex watch.
All over logo is an aesthetic choice and has nothing to do with your level of wealth. Designers make products that are more "low key" and others more flashy; there is something for everyone. Plenty of wealthy people also wear designer brands.
So, basically, still want to emulate the ultra rich, with ‘no logos’ trend, which I find tackier. Trying to be someone you are clearly not and are millions or billions outside your tax bracket. So ridiculous. Just find your own style, personal touch, find quality items you can afford and be happy.
@@nikolamitrovic323 Feeling good is the answer lady, read carefully. What these items have to do with good marriage? Someone may or may not have good marriage without having luxury items in closet😂
Same here. I know a women who has money (big money), has many different handbags from all luxury houses and wears whatever she likes. Her favorite handbag go to’s are the LV monogram bags, she loves them! So let’s not judge someone just because 😱 they’re wearing a logo!
The one thing also of why some things are more commonly searched in the lesser areas is there may not be a store with those brands in the nearest town or even in some of the cities. Compared with NYC, LA, SF, Houston, Denver where its short drive to those area or more accessible in some big box stores. Its definitely that way here in the Nashville metro, even in the more affluent area I live in of Franklin you have to go online to order it because they don't have it, or we don't have one here. But the Ralph Lauren brand has different tiers of clothes also, I'm sure most are not buying the $500-1500 sweaters from purple label or collection for women or nik naks for the house. Plus some of this stuff last forever like the higher quality jackets and don't go out of style fast either. One thing I've been looking at lately is the quality in comparison to the more normal brands that are charging pretty hefty price now within $15-40 of those nicer brands for some things. I also am going for the quiet luxury of things since I don't feel like being mugged or robbed, Ferragamo and Lori Piano are some of the best at it. There's nothing wrong with expanding your wardrobe and updating your style, Just know where you're going to be and for the occasion. Every man or woman needs some nice clothing, they have sales often also at Saks, Neiman, and bloomingdales half off or more sometimes just gotta be patient.
If I were a billionaire I'd still be wearing clothes I got from op shops etc because I just don't care about fashion. I wear what's comfortable to wear. And I wouldn't want to appear rich because I'd be a target for mugging or pickpocketing.
If you were a billionaire, you would never have to go anywhere pickpockets could enter. You would be more guarded against frivolous lawsuits and embezzlers than muggers. You could be in your gated community having everything come to you from groceries to stylists to nannies. When you go out, it's to similar communities and secure environments like country clubs. First-class air travel or even private jets.
@@natashadickson4819 I wouldn't want that lifestyle so most of my wealth would be hidden. I don't want to hang out with only rich people and even if I do I'm not the interested in trying to impress them with fancy goods.
Problem is that the people who need to watch this video are not watching it. I suspect that the majority of viewers of this video already do not waste their money on luxury brands.
Except they still spend tens of thousands of dollars on handbags, clothing, shoes, etc… AND hundreds of thousands to millions on vehicles … the difference is, the luxury designers stopped (somewhat) making outrageous looking shit. They make normal looking stuff, they just charge far far more than the actual normal looking clothing companies do, to make the same looking item
I dislike the statement that low class people buy luxury to look rich when the rich are the ones always trying to differentiate themselves from the middle or lower class rather that be by their oversized houses, expensive cars, or handbag collection I buy luxury and I’m not rich but I love rocking my designer handbags because they make me feel good not because I’m trying to claim status or portray myself as upper class because a designer item cannot tell you about my character my status or my accomplishments luxury is exactly what it reads luxury I think the rich is the reason for the status disparities and now that the middle class can afford luxury items now it’s a poor person problem and a reflection of who the person is just my thoughts ❤
It might be wiser to invest that money. Financial wealth means the size of your networth not what you can buy. If you buy luxury designer things but your networth is 10 000, you’re not wealthy.
I recall some douchebag at school bragging about having bought an Armani suit. No one believed him so he said he would wear it to school the next day. Turned out the guy hadn't lied, but the suit was in fact a track suit with a gazillion Armani logos on it. We all had a good laugh at that hideous outfit.
So true! Well, I have seen some women in the grocery store with a Louis Vuitton, when they are about to pay, they pull the ebt card. Some people I work with, love to display their Louis Vuitton on the desk for everyone to see it 🤦🏻♀️
In the late 90’s I read an article, if you could afford only one expensive bag it should be the LV Speedy 30. In 2003 I paid a bit over $500. I’ve used it a lot and it’s still beautiful. I own Gucci, YSL, Burberry. It’s not about impressing anyone. It’s like Will says in the movie Margin Call, you learn to spend what’s in your pocket.
I wouldn't call myself wealthy but i have a couple million. I do most of my clothes shopping at Target. My last two pairs of shoes are from Big 5. No labels. My daily driver car is a Buick Encore btw.
That is right. Those expensive brands are not luxury, but only overpriced products for the masses! Well, most average people are not that smart to figure it out, but it is the truth. Average people think, that if it is expensive and big fashion house, it must be of really high quality. What a scam in the end. There is some quality in it, but it doesn´t match price tag at all. The sad truth is, that there are also wealthy people, who buy this stuff, but those people have more money, than common sense and are uneducated. Truly smart and rich people go only for quality and usually smaller, unknown brands offer that.
it's true. I've been into menswear for 20 years and at this point, when I see loud monograms I assume "poor." Once the big labels went all-in on mainland China and other new wealth locations, those in-the-know got as far away from them as possible. Like skateboarders and hypebeasts ran from Supreme in the 2010's.
Real rich people may not care about these brands, but people within my tax bracket do. I wear logos for people of my tax bracket to see, I don't give a poo about what billionaires think, they are not my target audience. Most of the customers I see within boutiques are also well dressed with logos, they are just like me 🎉 They are my target audience.
The rich people I know don't buy ready-made clothes, not even if they are Chanel and what not. They have their own seamstresses and tailors they go to. They buy fabrics, bring a design they want, have their measurements taken and have them made for them. Their clothes are well-fitted, unique, one of a kind with no labels on them.
I'm genx and I'm old fashioned, but when I was young I learned that designer goods are goods made by a designer and created by hand by workers who have line of sight supervision by the designer herself or himself. A wealthy person goes to a designer and is shown several designs, and then the wealthy person purchases one of the items and it is custom tailored for them. That is designer fashion. Anything made in a factory and sold in a store is not sufficient. Anything mass produced and sold in a store is just a commercial item, not a designer fashion item.
BTW this is just pretentious video that's an undertone of condescendence, arrogant and contempt. Sanitising version of the archetypal right talking point that tis, "if you stopped eating avocado and buying $5 starbucks coffee, then you'd afford a house."
I get what you're saying, but truly poor or middle-class people can't go out and buy a Birkin bag. I grew up poor and felt guilty about buying a $75 Aigner bag when i got my first job.
It goes both ways because rich people try to dress like poor people now. Wearing Jordan’s, Air Force 1’s, Timberland boots paired with New era fitted caps, hoodies and varsity jackets and bubble coats used to be considered “ghetto” and low class. Now melanin deficient individuals from upper middle class and upper class suburban environments have gentrified sneaker culture and streetwear in the past few years. “Poor people” started wearing Gucci, Prada, Burberry, Balenciaga etc. en masse in the past few years because there is pressure for poor people of color to be better dressed than upper middle class and rich suburban mostly white people who traditionally dressed like Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs up until a few years ago.
Branded heels is another scam. You can't see the logo once you were them. Looks same as other. Yet you pay $$$> an most of the time you hardly wear them.
My wife and I have zero credit card debt. We have no car payments we got money in the bank. We go to vacation trips every year, we are able to fill up our gas tanks, Every time we go to the gas pump, and we are fortunate enough that we don’t have to worry about grocery bills, and paying our bills for that matter; but, a Rolex watch and a HERMES hand bag for her does sound nice.
Whatever you might think about those brands, they've incredible marketing departments. They manage to convince people to spend money they often don't have to buy stuff they don't need in order to impress others they might not even like, while making free advertisement for those brands.
These vid are SO important to young people, thank you for sharing and learning youngster they are part of a mind game and mass communication scam, actually. Think for one second and see. how people have becomen human billboards for the Gucci and Diors of this world... your are great !! 💖
I left my home region to transfer to an out of state university and for the first time saw people with stuff with Gucci “G” and “LV” all over purses etc. At the time, I thought a dark brown purse with light tan “LV” all over it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen. 😮 Ditto for a Gucci purse covered in “G.” Really horrid looking stuff!
I disagree. Some rich people still buy popular luxury brands like Gucci, Prada etc. The quiet luxury is a trend, guys!! The fashion market is pushing us all to shift to quiet luxury. Quiet luxury is not anything new 😂😂. If you choose to go to buy anything Loewe you are buying LMVH brand who sell the other luxury brands that we are told not to buy because they are for the middle class. What we need to buy is what makes you happy! It is all about preference and taste! What people need to know is the rich do not care about an item being quiet or loud luxury. They buy whatever they want full stop!
Designer brands with logos all over it is tacky. It just shows that people are wanting the status rather than quality. I only realized this after making more money. I have one Louis Vuitton bag and regret the purchase because the quality is not $3000 worth. I’ve realized that I should just buy what I like and focus on the quality rather than the ‘status’. It’s why I buy no designer clothing, my closet is literally just Aritzia, LilySilk and Reformation and I focus on natural fibers.
This video is utterly useless, perpetuating a negative image for those who invest in so-called luxury brands. Not everyone buys these products to flaunt wealth, and making sweeping judgments is both narrow-minded and ignorant. It's crucial to refrain from tarnishing people's character based on unfounded assumptions.
Did you do any research about this at all? I spent 7 years in a luxury goods and 23 years in consumer package goods market research analysis. Your statements are absolutely baseless Also in regards to luxury purchasing the United States Represents less than 20% of the entire world sale of luxury goods. At least 60-70 percent comes from china Also rich people are buying the stuff that has the brand names written all over it.
good thing i dont wanna wear big branded logos, i dont wanna look like a chinese exchange student who wears Canada Goose Jacket in the middle of a summer
Don't listen to this nonsense, just buy and wear what you want. If you want a certain thing buy it if you don't then don't. Videos like this are just doing to you what they claim luxury brands are also doing to you.
And then some of us make our own suits and handbags. Kinda hard to make a watch, but hey as a big Rolex fanboy, even I admit there's other cool brands.
The rich did not turn to quiet luxury as a reaction against the poor aping their style. There were two factors. The first was the Protestant Reformation, which resulted in a rejection of display among the ruling elite in Northern Europe; fashion historians call this "The Great Renunciation." The second factor were all the European revolutions, from the French to the Russian. The rich learned that displaying wealth was painting a target on their own backs... and I heard this straight from the mouth of Bob DuPont.
Im sorry. Im from tri state area. We didnt grow up with a lot of money. Our parents taught us to live within our means and the value of a dollar. I dont buy luxury goods. The money is better saved and invested for your future. I stolped buying unnecessary things in 2012 and use what i have.
Whenever I buy something deapite of the price, I always pay up-front. No loans, credit card debt, nothing. Never even have a credit card cause I don't need it. Buying these stuff is like investing money with no returns. Period.
First of all, buy what you love---not like. So many times ppl buy things then it sits in the closet for years or worn once or twice. If you react to something, it means you love it. As for monogram, that's a personal choice. Personally, I don't consider monogram as style, it screams I paid this much for this. Style is what you put together that is personal.
Luxury brands are supported/ purchased by the wealthy. 80% of luxury brands sales are made up of 20% of their client base. Ive watched women spend 20k on one piece or 150k in one month! Fragrances, sunglasses, cosmetics are what these brands sell to middle class to get a piece of the dream Ive sat in many company meetings so it’s part of their strategy.
What if you just really like the bags?
Buy what you like and wear it with pride.
I buy what I like that is of quality, name brand or not.
Style, is personally curated, not dictated. 😊
Quality > “ Luxury ”
Well said.
She is just exposing the brands to the masses and illustrating how it is your low self esteem that has a low income person buying items prices for affluent people. That's why America is dying
You would have a high income by now if you would invest your money instead of spending it.
@Meand1209 And how do you know I don't invest? And I'm not saying that buying luxury is an investment. I invest, travel, pay my bill while I purchase luxury, I budget and do it in a calculated way.
Okay but why would you want to look like the miserable swagless rich people in succession lol
They don't look that bad..
Miserable?
You're right. The only exception is collectors, who see designer items as art. I have some pieces that I just love to display in my closet and enjoy looking at them when I get dressed. I cary Mansur Gavriel bags daily and those do not have a logo or a hefty price tag.
Wearing branded clothes is gauche; I like nice clothes but fit is more important than the brand. That being said, the people who are shopping at Chanel and Hermes are not poor people either, just people who wish to dress wearing signs of their wealth, like wearing a Rolex watch.
Exactly the poor are not shopping at those this entire concept is huge contradiction
All over logo is an aesthetic choice and has nothing to do with your level of wealth. Designers make products that are more "low key" and others more flashy; there is something for everyone. Plenty of wealthy people also wear designer brands.
exactly
So, basically, still want to emulate the ultra rich, with ‘no logos’ trend, which I find tackier.
Trying to be someone you are clearly not and are millions or billions outside your tax bracket. So ridiculous.
Just find your own style, personal touch, find quality items you can afford and be happy.
I think that no logos is not tacky at all. Showing off your money is tacky.
I have some Lv, Gucci, Chanel & YSL leather items and I feel good about it.. that’s all.
Why? It is not a luxury. Is it real ? Chanel cannot buy you a good mariage.YSL cannot pay your tax or buy nice children.
They make normal looking stuff, they just charge far far more than the actual normal looking clothing companies do, to make the same looking item
thank you for tv series suggestions 🥰 great video as usual!
You're so welcome!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It might be wiser to invest that money. Financial wealth means the size of your networth not what you can buy. If you buy luxury designer things but your networth is 10 000, you’re not wealthy.
@@AnuF9 she didn't claim she's wealthy, you missed her point
not really a lot of rich people you would never know they are
I recall some douchebag at school bragging about having bought an Armani suit.
Some people I work with, love to display their Louis Vuitton on the desk for everyone to see it 🤦🏻♀️
I’m confused by those videos…so the Kardashians and all those famous athletes are not rich?
No it’s just your imagination according to this video!
I think of them as “new/newer” rich. They feel the need to show it off bc of it to show everyone they made it.
GREAT video! Puts it all in perspective.
I appreciate these type of videos and agree.
Thank you!
I don't care for fashion, and everyone can see that. Different story when it comes to food and electronics.
I'm from Chicago. You better have a fur coat here, because The Hawk will not be tamed.
Bang on! Stealth wealth rules.👍
When you are truly rich, it gives a sense of freedom. No need to prove yourself to anyone. You know you afford it. That is enough to feel comfortable.
Great summary! Can't relate, but I understand.
Oh god! Not the poor people!!!!!! The horror
I think spending thousands of dollars to impress other people is a mistake. …. Try investing in your future (retirement, for example) instead.
Depends on the individual. My landlord who is a certified millionaire she has a ,s class and big logo chanel bag.
Why don't people realise the same for Apple?
I recently bought T-shirt for 3 euros and its awesome feeling wearing it
The rich people I know don't buy ready-made clothes, not even if they are Chanel and what not. They have their own seamstresses and tailors they go to. They buy fabrics, bring a design they want, have their measurements taken and have them made for them. Their clothes are well-fitted, unique, one of a kind with no labels on them.
I know only poor middle class women buy $15K Chanel suits. I know a teacher who has a dozen of them.
This was a very well made and well narrated video.
Well done.
Totally disagree. Go to la & report back
Yup! Angeleno born and raised here! It’s so bad 😢 wasn’t always this severe
Is this a second channel or something?
Really, really good quality 😊
Mass market luxury goods are marketing genius
Rich people dress all kinds of ways they are not monolithic.
I never understand how can people pay top dollar for Chinese made products.
Truly wealthy people don’t show off their wealth. It’s that simple.
I totally agree with the video
My wife and I have zero credit card debt. We have no car payments we got money in the bank. We go to vacation trips every year, we are able to fill up our gas tanks, Every time we go to the gas pump, and we are fortunate enough that we don’t have to worry about grocery bills, and paying our bills for that matter; but, a Rolex watch and a HERMES hand bag for her does sound nice.
Go for it.
Overpriced
Whatever you might think about those brands, they've incredible marketing departments.
They manage to convince people to spend money they often don't have to buy stuff they don't need in order to impress others they might not even like, while making free advertisement for those brands.
These vid are SO important to young people, thank you for sharing and learning youngster they are part of a mind game and mass communication scam, actually. Think for one second and see. how people have becomen human billboards for the Gucci and Diors of this world... your are great !! 💖
I use to love name brands till i realized they are all made in the same sweat shop.
Buying "luxurious items" is converting real assets to imaginary assets.
Marshall & very few pieces from Ross, that's my style / look.
I have plenty of money to buy luxury brands but I choose not to. I don’t own any name luxury brands. I prefer to invest my money
In a company there are some people who are over paid and some are no over time pay.
I think this is a brilliant 5 min vid!
Thank you so much!
This might be a southern thing but my aunt has a lot of money but you usually catch her wearing camo, 😂
This is facts we are the only new who buy stuff we know we can’t afford even if we’ve a saved for it! I won’t play that game anymore ha
House is paid off, car is paid off, no credit card debt…I think I’m entitled to one luxury item that won’t mess with my money (Rolex).
Did you do any research about this at all? I spent 7 years in a luxury goods and 23 years in consumer package goods market research analysis.
Your statements are absolutely baseless
Also in regards to luxury purchasing the United States Represents less than 20% of the entire world sale of luxury goods. At least 60-70 percent comes from china
Also rich people are buying the stuff that has the brand names written all over it.
Great video 😁👍
good thing i dont wanna wear big branded logos, i dont wanna look like a chinese exchange student who wears Canada Goose Jacket in the middle of a summer
I like suits. Thats it.
The LV monogram is played out and tacky by this point
I'd argue that they're commodifying/capitalising on inequality.
Don't listen to this nonsense, just buy and wear what you want. If you want a certain thing buy it if you don't then don't. Videos like this are just doing to you what they claim luxury brands are also doing to you.
Never bought clothes with brands on them. Why would anyone want to be a walking billboard?
And then some of us make our own suits and handbags. Kinda hard to make a watch, but hey as a big Rolex fanboy, even I admit there's other cool brands.
Never understand paying more than custom. If I am going to spend that kind of money it would be custom made for me.
I never cared about brands
The rich did not turn to quiet luxury as a reaction against the poor aping their style. There were two factors. The first was the Protestant Reformation, which resulted in a rejection of display among the ruling elite in Northern Europe; fashion historians call this "The Great Renunciation." The second factor were all the European revolutions, from the French to the Russian. The rich learned that displaying wealth was painting a target on their own backs... and I heard this straight from the mouth of Bob DuPont.
My clothes come from Goodwill.
Im sorry. Im from tri state area. We didnt grow up with a lot of money. Our parents taught us to live within our means and the value of a dollar.
I dont buy luxury goods. The money is better saved and invested for your future.
I stolped buying unnecessary things in 2012 and use what i have.
Less attention seeking Some stuff is just tacky so I can see why wealthy would avoid some of the over the top eccentric stuff Makes sense
So we should expect another change soon because most are trying the old money or expensive look 😆😒
I love when people are jealous of me. That is the concept hidden here
Whenever I buy something deapite of the price, I always pay up-front.
This videos are made by people who hate the idea of luxury and glamour for their own insecurity. How do you praise Succession which isn’t even reality and Loro Piana then compare and slam Louis Vuitton guess what? They are always in competition on the same luxury shopping streets and department stores and both owned by LVMH.
Thank You! I’m sick of this silly idea that only poor people buy luxury.
@@rockyhrndz exactly poor people buying $1200 shoes when they are struggling to pay that in rent. Most poor people can’t even identify designer clothing.
