This is wild. The CEO of Torchmate prior to their merger with Lincoln used to own a class 7 desert race truck. I was the lead fabricator and mechanic for it. We had one of these tables in our shop for work on race trucks. This CNC plasma table is a nostalgic trip.
Gale is a legend. All these years in the industry, all the awards and accolades and not 1 bit of it has gone to his head. You can approach this man and he will treat you like he does everyone else. In addition to his process inventing electrical and welding patents, he also built his company, that to this day, is one of the most rewarding to the people who work there in the country much less Ohio.His grandsons still distribute over a quarter of the companies annual profits to the floor hands that build and help make better Lincoln products.
the issue i see is the cost of this machine if you add an accessory and the machine comes fully assembled the accessory should be fully installed as well. ESP since they are built to order machines with a 4 wee lead time.
Torchmate CAD is installed and you can work on TM CAD on a personal computer. It even has nesting built in and a ton of other features. It’s quite remarkable.
The torchmate is an ok starter table, I would prefer instead a JD2 instead Better gantry and drive motors etc. Id also go with the one and only hypertherm plasma torch sets.
I like how he just glazed over the fact that Lincoln bought a turn key cnc plasma table manufacturer and that the guy that started torchmate ( Bill Kunz) built the first one a Pantagraph cutter out a Ford windshield wiper motor in the 70's . I own one of the earlier kit versions a Torchmate 3 5x10. I even went to his house where he was selling then out of his basement. He showed me his stock room and all the different models. Then they grew and his son took over in Nevada.
Why would he go into detail of who did what in their basement before making it big and being bought out?? It’s irrelevant. Takeovers are a matter of good business, why sink money into developing your own line when you can just buy a company ready to go??

Speed and price would be my first thoughts. Water jets cut about anything but HP / power requirements and maintenance for a 60,000 psi water jet are pretty steep and you need about 50 HP worth of electricity. As an example the ceramic plungers in the intensifier are over $1500 and after about 2000 hours they are due for replacement. Garnet is about 25 cents a pound and you typically run a pound a minute. Great machines tbh but you need to understand the costs before jumping into one of those beasts. I suspect the plasma cuts metal a little faster and less expensively. But warp from heat can be an issue as well as work hardening the cut edge in the right material.
@@tbthedozer Agreed. Waterjet is versatile and accurate but cost prohibitive. Plasma is the fastest metal cutting method plus consumables are comparatively cheap. Even if you have to cut thick steel, most plasma tables will easily switch to a torch which is the fastest method when you are cutting over an inch thick. Warping is not an issue with plasma if you keep parts under water. The tables cost a bit more but smoke and warping are all but eliminated.
