- A look and assessment of my own lawn, along with it's for spring mow for 2024.
It's pleasing to see that the hedge height reduction has helped move the shadows back a little bit more than before.
The lawn has stripped up lovely but there are several issues I need to address:
Poa annua
Dog wee burns (dark green grass spots)
Patches/bald areas
I will get to these in future videos.
The purpose of this video was to simply get it cut and get that feel good feeling back! It's been a while!

looking good from down under winter here fast approaching but still very warm
Thanks! I might have to come down under in our winter for some extra sunshine :)
The difference is Paul, here in England, Winter means wellies, raincoats, brollies and warm hearty stews not flip flops, topless, sun cream and bbq's, lol.
I bet your winters are better than our summers
I think I'm ahead of you Shaun.
I've cut my front lawn on a high cut every month, twice now in March.
Still too wet for a low cut and scarify though.
Looking forward to a couple of dry, windy days and I'll be at it!
Sunshine does improve your mood. Crack on while it lasts. Hope you see and feel the benefit.
Thanks!
Looking great Mr Mower man👏👏👏
Thanks 😁😁
thanks mate.
No worries!
Looking good not having fertilised, took three buckets of poa and spring weeds out of my rear garden this week.
Nice... I've got it all to do 😁
Spring growth though, just lifts your mood
Really does 😊😊
Looks really good.ove the vids and the advice is priceless.
Can I ask what's the best seed for clay soil?
I'm hoping to do some renovations in the next couple of weeks now you've given me the know how.
Fescues are pretty hardy in clay soils
even though the lawns not at its best YET the stripes still make it jump out 👌👍
ooh yah.. Hope you're doing well matey and getting some work done in all the rain
Hi Shaun. Thank you. I was just checking to see if it helps. I have now scarified my lawn. What a job !! Hope it recovers soon. Some seed/ sand mix. Fingers crossed. Love yr advice. Cheers.
Glad to help.😊👍
Looking good for your first one , yes I seen that strange thing in the sky yesterday, but it’s back too rain now 😢
👍🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍🇬🇧👍
very short lived - all rain here today sigh lol
It's coming along well. Cutting the bushes down will help with the muddy bits
Thanks.. since seeing how well its helped IM even thinking now about taking the bushes out, once I get the fence in anyway
@@LawnRight True. It'll open up a lot of space.
Very nice not heard of that brand of mower!
It's very old but I love it's character 😊
Looking good mate. I'm chomping at the bit to get my over seeding done, it looks like the frost and low temps are getting close to being gone now. Been taking the top off my lawn, put some spring fert and liquid seaweed down just recently. So I'm thinking some time this next week the scarifier will come out, along with the compost roller spreader and seed. Very exciting.
Sounds all good Tony! Be here before you know it!
Really Saun?? I have mowed my lawn over 20 times this year. You need to game up my friend😂🎉
"spring" not 2024 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I still think you've mowed more though 😂
@@LawnRight ahahaha ypu got me there Shaun after all it is 1st April 😂😶🌫️
Nice stripes.😎
Thanks 😎😎
Our spring is a good month earlier - tulips are blooming n the lilac just started to bloom this morning in early April! - the grass is very thick here compared to pictures taken at the same time last year
Yeah it's lovely to see 😊😊
Got a similar situation over here, seeded last year and through winter POA had its way. Well, I'm on the route of trying to dig it all out. More keeps revealing itself so not done yet!
That's dedf on my list to do very soon too
I also had a good day yesterday mate....grubbed out as many weedgrasses as I could (unfortunately leaving loads of holes but had to be done) and then a close cut followed by a verticut and feed. Probably got a week of on and off rain so will eventually get back on it with an overseed and top dress with Jack's Magic...(JM offer at Dobbies is excellent - 3 for £15...last year I was paying almost £11 per bag off Amazon). My borders have just come to life over the last week and we've topped them all off with small bark from Morrisons at 3 for £9 (30ltr bag).
Sounds good and super exciting for the upcoming nice weather! 😊😊🤞🤞🤞
Hello Shaun....a quick question if i can. Do you think turfsolve would kill chafer gruff nematodes?
Hi I wouldn't apply at the same time do one then giv eit a couple of weeks
what should i use to level out the lawn please? topsoil? compost? sand and what type if so. many thanks
Hi for most jobs I'd use a sandy soil like rootzone or even plan soil.. It'll spread nice and evenly. The compost is great as an amendment and seed covering when seeding
That's the dwarf rye for you. It doesn't over-winter very well.
Hi mate, I seem to have lost your message about where to get the top soil you used in the green bags, please help. You’re doing a great job as always mate.
Keith.

Thank you so much, your a superstar 👍
My lawn is full of Poa and has the lighter green patches. Apart from trying to dig it all out and overseed I have no clue how to get rid of it all!!
It's rubbish how we don't have chemicals like our US comrades do.. They have pre emergents.. As an alternative you could try some roundup carefully brushed on the poa.. Giv eit 3 weeks then dig out and reseed once it's dead.. May still get more in time tho
What’s the plan this season Shaun, i remember last year you killed it off because of the poa?
Hi.. Will be digging it out very soon.. Aghh lol
Mine was full of moss filled my garden waste bin with moss 😮
😍😍
Hi Shaun, I killed my lawn off last spring. The annual meadow grass has been relentless since. I must have pulled hundreds of plants out to keep it at bay. Problem is once it gets the chance to drop seed it’s then very hard to stop
Yeha it's been a pain in the whotsit..
Random question. How do you keep the dogs off the lawn while overseeding or do you just let them on it? I have a 6 month old pup but my lawn is in desperate need of renovation. I am tempted to either do it all in 1 go and accept some of it will get wrecked or do 1/2 at a time and fence it off.
I'd fence it off and keep them off for a good month or so.. But I do have a long garden so hard choice for you really 🤔🤔
@@LawnRight Thanks for the reply bud. The lawn on mine is around 200m2 so he will still have a decent space to roam so I am leaning towards fencing off. Do you do the same thing? Sorry if you have explained this before
@@mrchips1795 yeah I tend to get some orange mesh temporary fencing off amazon comes with fence spikes
@@LawnRight Thanks a lot for the feedback. Love the vids and help you provide
Hi, really enjoy your channel. Can I ask you, my lawn always has longer and darker grass along the lines where the lawnmower wheels go. Is there a way of correcting that and avoiding it in future? Many thanks
Hi you might want to try and mow in a different direction for a while
@@LawnRight Cheers, I'll try that.
Hi Saun. Happy Easter. Why twice over to start with? Keep up the great work.
Hi Geoff, I guess there's no real reason or rhyme except to ensure all small twigs and leaves are picked up (and I can't get enough of it :) )
Quick question Shaun, your videos you mention your blades are blunt in one of your scarifiers, are they meant to be as sharp as a knife blade ? I have a cheap macallister one and it does the trick but it's as blunt as the back of a mower blade from new
Hiya. Its the curved tip that's worn away leaving a blunt edge like a butter knife
@LawnRight thanks for thr reply, right OK, I think I'm going to have a go at sharpening them, will help cut into the soil too I suppose 👍
Just mowed mine but I've got moss everywhere, I've bought a scarifier but can't get on cos it's too wet, it's only a small lawn say 10m x 10 do i need to wait until the grass is dry 🤔
Yeah I'd wait on till it's had a bit more dry weather unfortunately.. I went to one on Friday and couldn't do it with all the water in the clay soil
Hi Shaun, the lawn is looking good, apart from the Swordsman what make is your other petrol mower
Hi.. the other is a stihl 248 mower. The swordsman was a real bargain find.. on Facebook marketplace I got it for £40 several years ago.. its as old as the hills but I love its charm
Nice video again. My lawn has about 15 big POA patches - best to just dig out and renovate and seed?
Hi yes.. you could carefully brush some roundup on the leaves of that plant and wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to die off, or just dig it out.. its fairly shallow rooting
How often shpuld i scarify my lawn from spring through to autumn? After every cut?
Hi once or twice a year as needed.. Usually spring and autumn.... For additional excellence a verticut tee (groomer). Every few months will manage it more accurately
Nice colour Shaun, I've fertilised my lawns but still look flat and not very green, Why?
More sun id say' It's still very early in the season. My front garden looks wonderful (full sun) back garden weak and not as lush in colour (low light)
Have you used iron sulphate? Either the powdered stuff or liquid iron with a surfactant and your lawn should go dark green for 2/3 weeks
Hi.. might well be compacted.. if you fertilised over 2 weeks ago, this could be the reason.. could even be a lot of thatch.. if only just fertilised give it a week or 2 to assess.. can always fork the area in the meantime
@@LawnRightcheers Shaun, will give it a go 👍
Have you thought about seeding with a bent / fecue mix so the there isnt soil space for weedgrassess?
Hi it's crossed my mind.. I toyed with bent grass last year and chose a dwarf rye that spreads.. It hasn't done yet tho
What height did you cut at? What height do you normally cut at?
About 50 mm roughly.. Last year I went shorter but often I stick around this height
@@LawnRight Thank you for taking the time to reply, last year I was doing 30 but I was thinking of upping to 40 this year as I am not out on the lawn all the time and the kids use it. I might try 50 too now as this video looks good so far.
@@Mike-c3m2h it is. A little easier to maintain.. Good luck
@@LawnRight Thank you keep up the good work and videos!
Lawn looks lovely, what type of seed mix you used?
It was a dwarf rye from hurrells seeds that is supposed ot have creeping tendencies but it's not demonstrated that as yet
Would it be better to wait until mid April to scarify
Yes absolutely, even end of April.. I have to get out earlier unfortunately as Ive son many to get done for my customers so Im always assessing wether and testing what is acceptable
Hey Shaun,
I applied a moss killer on my lawn yesterday as it's riddled with moss. But it's absolutely covered in weeds as well? I want to scarify/overseed it end of this month but its so full of weeds.
Is it okay to put a weed killer down very soon after the moss killer?
I don't know what to do.
Hi you can def apply weedkiller now.. But wait 6 weeks at a minimum before seeding so will be mid may which is still doable
First mow 1st April ? Lacking again like last year i see... personally on my 6th mow and second granular feed of the year, 2nd foliage feed and just put my first seaweed feed of the year on. My lawn litrally looks like an autumn lawn in the spring
He he first mow of spring.. I have been mowing it right through winter 😁😁
Hi well done 😅 keep it up you are doing a great job and having fun making some brilliant videos superstar Ali Walsall west midlands england junction 10 m6 Walsall churckery
Thank you so much 😁
It’s raining here, Cheshire, again. I did ‘renovate’ my front lawn by following your advice. Four years ago I’d taken out a diseased small Acer. The lawn has sunk a little where the tree had been so l’ve been putting down topsoil to try to lift it, then seeded and covered with compost during top dressing. I cut twice, scarified, forked to make holes, seeded and top dressed. My neighbour is impressed 😂😂😂😂. It’s the first time l’ve tried to renovate myself and it’s incredibly hard graft. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
Thanks Christine and well done on the result! 😊
Excellent job Shaun. I've been busy aerating my lawn this week (with the JNJ with your recommendation). My clay soil is so wet at the moment, how do you know when the soil is almost dry enough to scarify? (Obviously touch it, but is there anything I should be looking out for?)
Hi.. When you stand on it and it's squelchy then avoid.. Anything like that is a no go.. Water will rumble up to the surface and it'll turn to mud
Was a lovely day on Saturday 😁 got all my lawn cut and even painted the fence 😁😁 great work mate
Makes you feel good doesn't it!
Sooooo jealous of your lawn Shaun, it looks amazing!!
Until you get up close though.. But felt good to do this with the sunshine out 😊😊
