We taught one of our dogs to find our tortoise when we needed to bring him in. If he doesn't turn up during an initial search, we send in the dog. He's never failed to find him.
@@GardenStateTortoise I heard poachers will sometimes use sniffing dogs to find eggs. Rather sad, but this can also be used to help save turtles FROM poachers too Although you've got that down from what I've seen.
My flavo's in the southeast semi hibernate w/ temps ranging from 45-75 over the winter. They do come up for hydration and return underground. Just my experience regarding them eating eggs, over the years I increased their powdered calcium intake and it seemed to help along with cuttlebones available to them. My group is predominately flavo, rhino Incisa and Manni which are brought indoors once temps hit below 55
Chris & Casey 🐢 I am always amazed at your continuing hard work to make sure each & every turtle/tortoise are safe & perfectly taken care of. I can only imagine the amount of work that we don't see in front of the camera. I will tell you that it would have driven me crazy looking for one Turtle before I would have to leave. Your patience is astounding. Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🔀 that you found the turtle 🐢 before the cold snap. Hope your conference went well I'm sure we will see it in next week video. Thank you Both for what you do for saving our turtles & tortoises 🐢❤🙏
Such beautiful animals. You sound like a proud papa when holding that male up. I love it! These guys are so lucky to have you and your family. You all have a great Thanksgiving ❤
You guys are getting Ready so well. I do NOT miss all the Winter Preprations. Here in the Yucatan, even my Sulcata stays out except when it dips below 50° F !
@@GardenStateTortoise I was gonna say, in some ways you’re like a ye olde timey farmer, and you get all your down time in a set series of cold months. 😉
Beautiful love and attention to your animals. Bravo. I remember doing the same thing, hands in soil and mud foraging to search for lost tortoises. Here in France, hibernation has already started. En tout cas, bravo. 🎉
@@GardenStateTortoise Awwwwww. I would like to see you and your turtles/tortoises, and meet Otis. Do you ever go to the Reptile Show at the County Center in White Plains, NY?
I have two chinese box tortoises! Got them from almost 3 decades ago. 😁🐢🐢 So fun to see more of them in this video. They look so alike mine. They are so kind and friendly. Can recommend it. ^^
I am now totally addicted to these videos and turtles. I even bought a shell on eBay. No idea what kind, maybe radiating tortoise was going to post a pic but there is not that feautre

@GardenStateTortoise absolutely i watch every sunday, learn so much, and have always loved these animals. Part of me wishes i had one but my health precludes it so i live vicariously 🐢
You and Casey are amazing! I hope that your family has a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you have a great time presenting at the conference! And I’m crossing my fingers for that last lonely Chinese box turtle!💕
I wonder if you can train your dogs to be "Turtle Hounds"? Like Truffle Hounds, but instead of sniffing out buried fungus, they sniff out buried turtles and tortoises!
They're so beautiful. I hope you find the missing female. We don't have to take mine inside (she's a red foot), because where I live, the coldest it ever gets is 70°F and just today, we had a heat wave of 99°F. In November.
Would you say with your communal enclosure that multi-species offer each other animal enrichment? Or is it more along the lines of they just don't fight each other? Thanks again for another wonderful video!
What prepared foods do you feed your tortoises? Do you do 50/50 prepared and fresh foods? Will you do a video on feeding tortoises. Is it ok to feed only prepared foods?
We feed a wide combination of mostly natural items. It’s not healthy to feed on prepared foods. We actually have several videos on feeding in the care videos playlist on this channel.
Love the flavo hibernation setup. What low temp does that hibernation box get to? I’m in CT and this week is going to be COLD. I pulled mine into the basement. Had them in the garage but it was 45 in the garage this morning.
That wouldn’t work as cold-blooded animals, like reptiles, can't generate their own body heat and rely on external heat sources to regulate their temperature. Snakes barely show up at all on thermal imaging, turtles aren’t any different unless they’ve been directly in the sun and have warmed to an optimal temperature.
I've been thinking about getting a Chinese box turtle. Can they live with my Easterns outside in the summer ? Also live in New Jersey and also almost named our 8 year old Black Lab Angus ! But my son picked a different name. haha Thanks for the videos always helpful
@@GardenStateTortoiseThis may be a silly question, but how do they get air? I thought maybe the dirt covering them was loose and allowed for air pockets, but if it's meant to compact, do they just dig back up if they need air (like turtles in the water do)?

I have done the same with my dogs. They have found wandering turtles at some amazing distance from the last seen spots!
How did you train your dog to do this task @padoodle81?
lol about to comment this , i dont own a dog , how you go about train a dog to smell out a tort , maybe a video content on it

Awesome. Thank you for sharing that.
does it look like for you there is a chance of them hybridizing?

Beautiful turtles! How do you keep them hydrated cause it seems very dry there?
Thank you. We have to regularly use sprinklers and overflow ponds when these droughts happen.
Do you think a red eared slider could hibernate outside in Vermont? If she had a greenhouse like one of yours?
She may not even need it

I do
Meanwhile in Sweden snow

So, turtles and tortoises survive until Spring without any access to water for hydration? Even after such a dry prior season?
They survive by subjecting themselves to moisture within the ground. Fully aquatic species sleep under water.
@@GardenStateTortoise thank you and that is amazing!
Question: How do the Chinese boxes cover themselves with substrate without leaving a burrow hole?
As they descend, the dirt fills in behind them and compacts.
