Tower of Power horn section....NOBODY better.. Emilio and The Doctor have been putting together stellar brass for 50 years. Their reputation for unmatched musical prowess is evident by the dozens and dozens of bands they have performed with over the years not to mention their own unrivaled soul and funk band originating in 1968 from Oakland, CA. and continues to tour nationally and internationally to sold out venues 250 days of the year. No other horn oriented soul / funk / jazz band can truthfully claim the same.
Wow; this performance with all these accomplished musicians is the best. Toni Childs is new to me, but lending plenty of soul. Tito is at the top of his craft! What we have here is nothing but the best! ------- Laurence H. of Del Rio, Texas
This is a song of Al Green....one of the best voices in the world!! This is a classic!!! Electrifying!!!!!!!!!!!!! When you are brushing up your heair to go out, listen it!!!
Used to watch this show live. Back when tv really was a medium for art. Paul Shaffer brought in the best every week.....witness this one. Wow. Thank you!
The band line up for is Al Green and Toni Childs vocals, Carlos Santana on guitar, Tito Puente-percussion, David Sanborn-sax, Tower of Power horns, McCoy Tyner on Piano, Background vocals: Melissa Etheridge, Darlene Love, Patti Austin.
Backing vocals Darlene Love, Patti Austin and Melissa Etheridge. I'm a big fan of Toni. Al has a unique voice and Paul Shaffer chose another (Toni's) to complement his. Great Performan
what a wall of sound! i remembered this rendition being pretty good when i saw it on TV decades ago. after seeing and hearing it on youtube recently, i can't believe how good this sounds. the tower of power horn section, will lee's bass, melissa, patti and darlene as backups... i can go on and on. al green and toni childs are good, but they are great together on this rendition. and hat's off to Paul Shaffer for assembling and getting this all to work so well. yeah!
No matter how many times I watch this, I get the same buzz.. I sent the link to my kids, who are in their 20s, and they're now Al Green fans. What a fucking lineup, doing my alltime favorite song!
Thanks to Paul Shaffer for bringing so many of his music friends together for this historic concert, and such a brilliant arrrangement! It must be a real challenge considering most of those people's own touring schedules, personal lives...reminds me of what a major production it was to get people together for the We Are The World project.
What a gem of a jam. Just now found this. I loved Toni Childs when her album hit in 1988; there is nothing--absolutely nothing--comparable to hearing Al Green live (in 1972, he played "grad night" at Disneyland for us so.Calif. high schoolers!). Toni Childs was part of the sonic inspiration that led me to start my career in media in 1989. Besides those named, I think that's Phoebe Snow and then Darlene Love next to Melissa E. Awesome all-star lineup. Thanks for posting. I've been re-ignited!
I watched this when it first came on TV and recorded it on my VCR, I wore the hell out of this tape, playing all the time. Thank You! THANK YOU! for posting this. It has all my favorites.
Only performance Ive ever seen equal this was Roberta Flack with Luther Vandross, Patti Austin and Lani Groves backing at Colby College in the early 70s. With Luther and the ladies driving her, Roberta's voice (in its prime) was just soaring in a full speed version. You can sort of get an idea listening to Roberta's recorded version at slow speed 2 decades later, but as a opening song live it was a killer. Sorry I ran on, just love this song.
JÁ OUVI UMA CENTENA DE INTERPRETAÇÕES DESSA ARTE MUSICAL E FICA DIFÍCIL DIZER QUAL A QUE MAIS GOSTEI, A MÚSICA É LINDA QUALQUER ARRANJO FLORESCE MARAVILHOSAMENTE.
What an amazing live performance!!!! Rest In Peace Willie Mitchell, who produced & arranged this tune for Al Green(and many other classics). Jan.11, 2010
I remember Letterman making some comment after the introductions, "Carlos, I guess you didn't get the memo about the band deciding to not go with the all-red outfits?"
this is awesome! man the BEST perform of this one Ive ever met! actually the band is fuking great, what a line-up! al is soo cool on vocals.. great.. thanx
Time was on the Letterman show that when Tower of Power played NYC, they would come on the show. This would be typical of Dave's band to put together an extravaganza and all-star performance. You can't see this anywhere else on television. I can't remember the last time T.O.P. did the Letterman show in NY. Time to bring them back. (featuring Larry Braggs, of course)
Toni was fantastic...and I only say "was" because she-for whatever reason- hasn't recorded anything in years. At ;east that I can find. What we can agree on is we are at a loss without her beautiful vocals! Nonetheless....many months ago- after listening to "Angels Talk"- I took a stb at You-Tubing "Toni Childs." This was the end product. There will NEVEr be an assembly of this much talent ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very Good! Charm, cool and different version! Love this music, and despite not knowing Toni Childs until now, already loves! Sorry English, but what matters are soul.
Anybody know who the little sax player is next to Emilio Castillo is? I saw him play live in the 80s and although I am a trumpet player, the guy was unbelievable. Always wondered what happened to him.
In reference to the 2 trumpet players - that was Tower of Power's horn section - plus David Sanborn on alto sax. The trumpet players were Greg Adams and Lee Thornberg
does anyone have a year guess on this gem of a clip? Paul still had hair and Rev Al going with the jerri curl. What a hell of a lineup. Even the background singers are A-listers!!!! Whoooo. Nice.
OK, my last post on this. 1. Childs was writing Union when the fight occurred. She was driving Baerwald insane. Maybe the same fight broke her and DR up as well. 2. DR produced Union, so I thought he was still doinking her. My bad. 3. Message me if you want to keep going..
She was/is David Ricketts g-friend. When she and Baerwald had some kind of fight (She was writing "Union" while D&D were trying to write a new album) it cause a rift between the two Davids. Did you read my first post??
One of the best live performances ever on TV
Could not agree more!
amen
My favorite, saw it live and could not believe what I was witnessing
In these crappy times a reminder of happier days--God bless Al Green!
Now this is what i call MUSIC
Tower of Power horn section....NOBODY better.. Emilio and The Doctor have been putting together stellar brass for 50 years. Isn't that David Sanborn on one of the sax's? and who is the Howard Jones blond guy on sax?
I believe James Brown horn section is equally good
Probably thee best music video on RUclips...Truly history in our hands.
You have got that right!
Damn right
Fabulous! Seeing Patti Austin back there too! this is a great funky version!! Paul Schaefer is a genuis
one of tha best performances of "lets stay together"!!!

Wow! Mouth Dropping! Never seen this performance before
Never another Al Greene, some of the best soul songs of his day.2020 here.

Wow. Thank you!
many all star bands are named as all starr bands.
BUT THIS IS REALLY ALL STARR AND DESERVE TO BE NAMED LIKE.
The band line up for is Al Green and Toni Childs vocals, Carlos Santana on guitar, Tito Puente-percussion, David Sanborn-sax, Tower of Power horns, McCoy Tyner on Piano, Background vocals: Melissa Etheridge, Darlene Love, Patti Austin.
greatness
Pure Joy! Thank you!
Backing vocals Darlene Love, Patti Austin and Melissa Etheridge.

It doesn't get much better than this, Carlos Santana guitar solo with the Tower of Power horns, Bravo!
Increíble AL GREEN, CARLOS SANTANA, TITO PUENTE!!!!!!!!!!

THIS is seriously BRILLIANT!
and the video is really rare! we can see there legends together! Al, Toni, Carlos.. wow!!

It must be a real challenge considering most of those people's own touring schedules, personal lives...reminds me of what a major production it was to get people together for the We Are The World project.
Wow. The Rev is so real,. this song comes from his soul. Only a broken heart would know.
What a gem of a jam. Just now found this. I'm almost 98% sure it 's Patty Austin, Darlene Love and Melissa Ethridge. Hard to tell due to bad quality video.
I think it's Patti Austin.
It's a blaster I've been coming back to for a good few years. Blows the cobwebs away. Music with raw people power.
Toni Childs is probably one of the most understated female vocalists of our age. She has a dynamic voice!!!!!!
Tito Puente on Timbales. The king.
I watched this when it first came on TV and recorded it on my VCR, I wore the hell out of this tape, playing all the time. Thank You! THANK YOU! for posting this. It has all my favorites.
wow that's nice.
How can one room hold that much talent
Looks like everyone was having fun. RIP Tito Puente.

Oh my GOODNESS!!
I so looove this!
Thank you. I could watch this over and over again.😍
Wow! Tower, Sanborn, Al, Santana, Austin, Will Lee! Killer!
Thanks so much! I saw this live years ago Late Nite with David Letterman. Never gets old...
Awesome! Had me dancing in my chair!

Incredible. Where are TV moments like this now?

dang! this is too good!
I remember Letterman making some comment after the introductions, "Carlos, I guess you didn't get the memo about the band deciding to not go with the all-red outfits?"
Carlos can wear a thong and flippers if he wants....
I loved this video for so many years.
the best version I ever see.....
great horn section, thanks for posting this
Simply one of the best versions of the song ever done.
Phew, 1st time I've seen this version. It's great
A rare treat to see/hear!
@MissTheKriss I searched for this since the night I saw it live. This IS the only place on earth, lol, and I'm blessed to find it. THANKS- HOWEVER....
You can barely see him, but that's McCoy Tyner (who played with John Coltrane) on piano.
this is awesome! man the BEST perform of this one Ive ever met! actually the band is fuking great, what a line-up! al is soo cool on vocals.. great.. thanx
beautiful song
Got this taped on VHS live when it first recorded!
By the way, Al did this on another late night show "Saturday Night Live" for its 25th anniversary. Their house band backed him up.

David Garfield & friends did a superb version for the Jeff Porcaro tribute album, but definitely, nothing beats the original. Al Green...the man.
the amazing Tito Puente....
WOW.. I am floored.
The Tower of Power horn section!
Toni was fantastic...and I only say "was" because she-for whatever reason- hasn't recorded anything in years. At ;east that I can find. What we can agree on is we are at a loss without her beautiful vocals!

Holy crap - lots of talent up there...
Wow and Wow! AL was an amazing singer.

Was that Carlos Santana? It looked like him.
@@reepurpose8712 red clothes... yes that is him!!!!
Steve Groves on Sax...early 90s horn section. Lee Thornberg on Trumpet...both phenomenal talents.

The guy to his left, our right is David Sanborn

Don’t forget Will Lee on bass
Yes that is definitely him and Carlos Santana on guitar
Very Good! Charm, cool and different version! Love this music, and despite not knowing Toni Childs until now, already loves! Sorry English, but what matters are soul.

I still live to jam this song out on my blue tooth speakers by the pool. #bestever
The sleeper is the great McCoy Tyner on piano!
Wow
Didn't notice that
RIP maestro
U kidding, right?? Because, if this is real, that performance should be on HISTORY!
Anybody know who the little sax player is next to Emilio Castillo is? I saw him play live in the 80s and although I am a trumpet player, the guy was unbelievable. Always wondered what happened to him.
Just...wow!
so much soul in this song..love it!!
