It’s interesting that the title is framed to as if it’s a third person observer while the poem itself is from a first person perspective of the history and cultural relevance of rivers. In the context for development of civilizations, rivers and bodies of water are known to be fundamental to prosperity because of several reasons. Trade routes, water for crops, hunting, and fishing. Langston gives makes the humanity of this environment apparent. “Bathing in the Euphrates” and “building in the Congo with the river lulling him to sleep.” I think the purpose of his title is to draw observers into this sense of a people through those important historic cultural signifiers of ancestral lands and tie it to the American identity. I cheated a little bit since I came from an audio recording of Langston Hughs explaining why he included the reference to Lincoln and the Mississippi River.

also,,, i think the common denomator to all rivers is slavery... google each river plus slavery... so when abe comes, he frees the slaves and he sees sunset from the dusky slavery.. i stand to be corrected though,
Just a comment, the Euphrates is actually in Asia not Africa however I believe in genesis it’s said the Euphrates was one of the rivers that came out of the garden of Eden so I think this might be why he mentions that one. Besides that, I know basically nothing about poetry but your analysis seemed pretty good lol
@@tawonga_divine while the Middle East is between Africa and Asia, I don’t think it’s generally considered as a whole to be part of both continents. And from what I can tell from Google, the only countries it goes through are considered Asian countries, turkey, Syria, a few others.

Actually it's by the middle east region meaning its both in africa and Asia..
