Witch Doctor is one of the most evergreen Dota 2 Position 5 Supports in the game because of his strong early-game nuking damage and capitalization on harassment while also offering late-game Carry Potential with his Pure Damage Death Ward ability that can destroy entire teams when purchased with Aghanim's Scepter. The scary part about Witch Doctor is trying to make sure you can actually channel the whole time of your Death Ward ability as you very susceptible to being targeted down and it is why we often recommend Glimmer Cape and Aghanim's Shard on him. few personal tips -
1st - u can skip arcanes to get early urn which will help with mana regen and the combo of maledict + urn damage is deadly.
I choose to go urn build when i know there are strength healing heroes like necro/lifestealer/bristle, later on i can get vessel which helps my survivability and hurts the enemy strength cores.
blood grenade + urn + maledict is unsurvivable, unless the enemy is smart and get raindrops (this is a huge counter to early maledict BTW)
2nd - WD and his shard have been nerfed a lot lately,
even the itemization, where u could get arcanes and dis-assemble the arcanes into aether lens, and then late game build octarine using your aether lens to get lower CD, all that has gone.
now u have to buy aether lens separately.
so what i have found is if you keep ur brown boots, skip arcanes and directly build aether, it will be decent mana regen wise and still give u potential to deal max output due to increased cast range.
as a support WD , items are hard to get by, and sometimes skipping arcanes to get a early aether lens will prove to be devastating for the enemy team in mid game fights.
3rd, when the game is really going good for you, meaning u have gotten kills and the team is winning, u can skip aether and instead get a blink,
now patience is key, like Mr Torte de Lini said, once u see 2 enemies bunched up together, u jump in , casket, maledict and ward, and boom, you have taken down 2 heroes.
and you are already winning the fight.
aether is 2275
blink is 2250
glimmer is 2150
u can only get one by midgame , so choose wisely according to your gameplay.
u wanna sit behind and be patient, go glimmer.
if u want to be gigachad doctor initiator and instantly take down 2 enemies go blink.
aether can be farmed later in both these builds.
4th - Glimmer is a goated item , u can save urself, ur teammates. and dont forget about the passive 20% magic resistance. when the enemy is magic heavy , you need to survive the burst. and this item will help you.
5th - while Silencer can be annoying, i have a special trick to counter Silencer, they usually press R in panic when they see the ward damaging their teammates, what I do is , I rush shard, or convince my team to get the Tormentor early, then i use the shard, 9 itmes out of 10 the Silencer is baited into pressing their Global, bcoz they think i used the Death ward, but its the switcheroo instead !!! and then when my switcheroo is over, I channel my ward and the silencer is sad. you will be surprised how many global silences i have baited just by this trick.

That's how I felt when I watched what was out there. Not a lot of step-by-step instructions on how to play each hero.
Granted, that changes depending on the game but this series of videos is trying to break it down more easily for those just starters

Remember that sometimes getting maledict lvl1 is far better if you just want to keep that ogre/clockwork at a safe distance in the laning stage
Another note is that he has been nerfed to oblivion in the last few patches so I myself would probably wait for a while before I play him again

In the DOTA community in my country, I'm considered the best WD player for some reason. But I'm a low ranked scrub!
I still consider Urn/Vessel as my go to item early game after mana boots.

Well they nerfed Witch Doctor Aghs Scepter so its much easier to pull off carry now!
