+ Are the small hinge covers purely cosmetic? Mine have both fallen off and I probably lost one of them a long time ago.
+What is the purpose of the adhesive ribbon you pulled out and then reapplied?
+Those three metal screws on the hinge--what purpose do they serve?
+Lastly, did the manufacturer originally use glue to secure the hinge to the screen, and it just breaks down over time?

Cosmetic. Holds the screen to the cover better. The screws held the hinge to the metal piece. The glue that held the metal piece to the cover originally failed.

Mine didn't have those white strips of adhesive - only one side had anything visible, and it was clear and wouldn't pull off?
