    Both amazing drummers, it's hard to say who's better. They both have their own style and technique... BTW i read in a recent interview with Bostaph, he said he played a few shows in California with Slayer before this Donington gig.

    • @diabolusdc
      @diabolusdc 10 лет назад +6

      At the time of this performance Paul was the better, the pure physicality here compared to, for example, the dodgy footwork from Lombardo on Decade. However more recent shows Dave has the feet, interesting fills and a general tightness. Paul's first shows of 2013 were definitely below par but he seems to be nailing it in recent shows.... not bad for almost 50! Dave=better drummer, Paul=better athlete, it depends on what you're there to see. DC

    • @realmusiciswithinstruments9915
      @realmusiciswithinstruments9915 Год назад +1

      @@diabolusdc Dave declared why his footwork on the Seasons tour was so weak. Rick Rubin at the time wanted him to sit higher behind th ekit so the audience could have a better look at him. But that made his technique hard to execute. After leaving Slayer, he founded Grip Inc and if you see videos of him during that time, he was at his peak, never lost it since.

    • @DerOberfoerster
      @DerOberfoerster 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@realmusiciswithinstruments9915 And if Rick Rubin tells you to jump, you ask how high? That seems like a lame excuse to me. I don't think Rubin would have persisted on that if Lombardo had explained it to him. I mean he doesn't seem like the guy who chooses looks over sound.
      Btw. To me Lombardo and Bostaph are both excellent drummers. I will never understand this ongoing debate in almost every comments section of a Slayer live video.

      darrin connor Paul truly raised the bar with that concert. I was there....Mesa AZ 1995. Certain tracks just light years beyond Dave's original drum track. Hell Awaits...the tempo jump after the intro. Captor of Sin was ridiculous with the fills. At Dawn They Sleep, the spam quads that he sustains at the end. Mandatory Suicide and South of Heaven were just sick. Paul just brings a level that Dave never displayed if he had it. He just always had the speed and power. But Paul always has not only those but also a level of inventiveness in a live performance. He doesn't stick to the studio track. I have been following him since Forbidden before he joined slayer. Always been a fan of his work.

    I really think Dave's fills are very hard to play ; if you listen to "Seasons in the Abyss" song, you can hear a lot of differents and complex fills with a "ternary" touch. Paul BOSTAPH is a great composer because he's never easy, HE IS DEFINITELY A VIOLENT DRUMMER ^^ with binary feeling (A lot of drummers prefer Dave because he play drums with a ternary feeling). "Divine Intervention" album is entirely dedicated to the drums. I really think SLAYER was angry about Dave's split ^^ VENGEANCE :D

    I have no idea why J.H. used a double flat in the second stanza in Silent Scream. The change up was perfect before the new double flat was introduced. Maybe they were trying to portray a feeling that was originally not part of the song. I need to investigate this further. Now, that I noticed this, maybe I my self will use a double flat in the solo as well. It almost seems as if he was about to use a dorian scale or derivative of then changed his mind. I just wish he was still alive so that I could try and understand why he did something and why.

    @DamZZmaD: That's not true, I've seen Dave play stuff off God Hates Us All in 2004. In my view both drummers are different, but very good at what they do.

    Mostly it's Kerry that decides what songs they play, so it's better if you ask him.

    Paul was never up to standard with the bass drums as far as such songs as Angel Of Death and At Dawn They Sleep go. Dave plays Disciple and Payback excellently, I've never had any complaints compared to Paul's playing. He plays them quite well, he's not missing anything.

      Erm, this song is more challenging to play on the kicks than Angel of Death. Its persistent 196bpm 16ths for most of the song. Paul used to be very, very good on the kick drums as you see here. But, he got hurt in the early 2000s (right before Lombardo came back) and was never the same after that.
      Also, Dave butchers Disciple live. Every. single. time. And its almost certainly because he can't be bothered to learn Paul's songs properly.

    Seems more like "war ensemble" going on here... the who's the better drummer etc. This was one of... if not THE first appearance for Bostaph, he does an excellent job. A much better job than Lombardo does on the DoA recordings from what I can hear. I find Dave's recent live performances more interesting even for the older songs (e.g. the fill on Postmortem) and his playing a massive improvement on DoA. So check 'em out as often as possible while you can. DC

      Dave Lombardo had a nagging back injury during that period that hampered his playing.
