Brings back memories , i worked in truck wreckers many years ago for a short stretch , the old fella that ran the joint had a whole bunch of old trucks for sale one of which was a compactor with a bin lift on the back , the hydraulic pump was dodgy on the compactor so the old fella sourced a pump from something else in the yard to get it going , we put a bin next to the lift and activated it , the pump he put in was much higher capacity , the bin lift picked up the bin so fast and threw it over the top of the truck about 30 yards :).
I used to work on the back of a garbage truck. It always gave a smile to my face when customers come out and ask will the truck handle that. And I reply watch this.

No bother, no hassle, outdoors all the time, (it was a lovely summer), listening to the birds tweet. It was totally stress free and I got paid as well. Happy, happy days, young and carefree. Our Waste Management trucks in our area must be super spoiled. They would look at a couch in front of someone's yard, laugh and keep on going. They'd tell us to throw that crap away ourselves because they ain't doin' it. lol
I set a couch at the curb at my old house. In that town, they have auto loading trucks only. no back loading. The buy just picked the couch up using the claw for the trash cans, and mashed it through the top hole. It was awesome to watch, and impressive.
I'm a Janitor for a living. I take out trash to the dumpsters and it gets on my uniform. I clean toilets. People in the rich neighborhood I work in sometimes give me dirty looks. It's a dirty job. I want to run the hydraulic controls. Awesome Guys!!!
My new brother-in-law left a 'present' in our basement some forty years ago; their massive white elephant of a couch. I removed the cushions and settled upon the idea of putting the hefty frame on my back like I was portaging a canoe. I got it out to the front alright then stacked the cushions alongside. That couch made a number of very satisfying crunching sounds as the truck just ate it up. It was wonderful.
Where I live , you call for a special pick up and they laugh at you - so we have a special phenomenon here called ‘fly tipping’ our beautiful countryside and parkland are free dumping sites!
I worked for a small business while in high school.. went to work after school doing the regular cleanup when one of the full time ladies came to me all nervous and asked if I had brought in a newly delivered leather chair. I told her no.. it seems a new boxed chair was delivered earlier and placed at the back alley door. The trash truck came along and crunched it then realized it was new knocked on the back door. The boss was so pissed at everyone. It was a chair for a local judge. Oh those were the days......
Had no idea trash trucks could do that. I had to throw out my old sofa bed. My hubby took out the entire metal reclining piece which got picked-up by a scrap metal collector. I'm glad some use will be made of my old sofa.
I've been on the garbage trucks for nearly 20 years, experience tells me to never crush a sofa or chair before checking out under the cushions and down the back.

Those guys are awesome. In my old neighborhood if the lid couldn't fully close on the can (they'd say it was over loaded), they'd leave it and drive on to the next house.
That’s a stupid rule. Here if the lid is open they take it but if it falls they will leave it so if you balance it well it all gets taken. Some will pick it up anyway
@Truck Master642 what do you like about garbage trucks? Is it the hydraulics and mechanical mechanisms that are used to exert so much force onto object?
Worked on 25 cubic yard Leech when I was in HS and college. Dumbest thing we crushed was an old fridge with an ammonia based cooling system. McNeilus compactors built just down the road in Dodge Center.
I have seen people pick up couches and mattress that someone died on or was infested. IF you can Always ask the owner about the history of the item before you take it. Plus, they might have other items to give you.
