- Introduction to Osteoarthritis (OA) - Part 1 ...Arthritis is divided into non-inflammatory (such as osteoarthritis), and inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, sjögren syndrome, gout,...etc).
Osteoarthritis (OA) is a biomechanical degeneration of cartilage and their matrix (combined with growth of bone called subchondral sclerosis). Osteoarthritis is, by far, the most common rheumatological diseases.
Osteoarthritis is the same as degenerative joint disease.
Osteoarthritis is divided into primary (idiopathic) and secondary (2ry to something else such as trauma, congenital anomaly, inflammatory arthritis,...etc).
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by osteophytes (bony projections) in the DIP (Heberden nodes) and PIP (Bouchard nodes).
OA is diagnosed clinically and radiologically (x-ray)...You might need to do some labs to rule out other diseases.

I will need to watch your whole rheum series before my rheum rotation this fall. :)
n the past, osteoarthritis (OA) was considered to be simply a degenerative "wear and tear" process and therefore often misnamed as degenerative joint disease. However, the pathogenesis of OA is much more complex than just wear and tear and the term "osteoarthritis," where "-itis" is indicative of an inflammatory process, is indeed correct
reference uptodate
I agree. My uncle died aged 89 without ever having suffered from OA, even though he was an active fell walker all his life; whereas many people much younger and far less active than he are diagnosed with the condition. Also, it seems more prevalent in certain families than others, suggesting some genetic predisposition. Furthermore the joints bearing the most weight like the knees are not always the ones to show wear and tear, as in my late mother's case.
Cartilage can regenerate, albeit slowly, maybe more so in some than others or perhaps some people just has less to start off with.
I love this man, 😂he is by far the best for me . So fun and easy to understand , not to mention the sarcasm and humour
Thanks a lot, dear 😊😊😊
I’m 29 & have OA (mono/asymmetrical) somewhere between my shoulder and my arm. I was in the military so that explains my issue. I have a high tolerance for pain but only oxycodone barely helps relieve my shoulder pain. Of course I got prescribed tramadol and some other med that don’t really do anything for me. Keep your head up my OA ppl!!!
Don’t give up!
I just love this man. Like where have you been my whole life😄😄❤❤❤
Thank you ☺️
Learning a single point is far better then reading a whole chapter 💞

Hi all, my Xray reports are ok, and mri report DOES NOT mention the word CARTILAGE. It only mentions ACL sprain(no tear).

I have a video on SLE in my rheumatology playlist!
@@MedicosisPerfectionalis yeah but those are available for members only, and sadly i find no option in here as to how to become a member :(
💫💫💫💫
:)
just not in the elderly. i'm 41 and i have oa.
also cause by trauma which cause the oa.
Primary osteoarthritis is generally a disease of the elderly. That doesn’t mean that young people can’t get it.
There are exceptions to every rule, and there is a difference between primary and secondary.
I am so sorry that you’re going through this...Keep fighting and don’t give up!
I wish you the best!
Wow great info. I get early or from Truma to the hip
Awesome introduction!
As expected from you :)

isn't there synovitis present in osteoarthritis? The recruited lymphocytes will cause inflammation in the synovial joint - synovitis?
It’s less likely as compared to inflammatory arthritidies (like rheumatoid arthritis).
He is built for teaching ! most of our professors were not apt to their job
The video is wonderful and helps me a lot. thank you for this video
Loved the video, but at 11:20, sorry but you don't remember mathematics, haha. Geometric/exponential is NEVER x squared (that's quadratic). Geometric/exponential would be 2 to the power of x, buddy. I learnt a lot from your video!!
You’re right 🥰🤪
Why there is itis in the end if there’s no inflammation in its pathogensis ??
It’s a wrong name.
great video but I'd like to point out that synovitis is indeed present and strongly associated to OA. the idea that the "itis" part is a misnomer is outdated, and it has been shown that inflammation does indeed play a role in the progression of OA
I meant no "systemic" inflammation.
@@MedicosisPerfectionalis yes but you also said that there is no synovitis, which is not true
sir do we find raised "lymphocytes" in osteoarthritis in "cbc" report? please tell I will be grateful
Probably not, but everything is possible.
*perfect*
Thanks 🙏
If non inflammatory then why lymphocytes ?
There is some chronic inflammation.
Why in the 40s I’m having this? Diagnosed today 🙈
I am so sorry to hear that.
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
❤️❤️
Thank you!
