I went to Kenton School 1968-1975. The swimming pool at school was the best bit of the school .I loved double swimming lessons .- going to watch the rest of the video now
Kenton was a wonderful place to grow up. I was a year old when we moved there and I was ten when we moved away because of dad's work. I attended Hillsview Primary it was a newly built school at the bottom of Hillsview Avenue. I have wonderful memories of growing up there. I wish I could find some photographs of my school. Mr Dowson was head of the Juniors....very tall thin man I remember. Lovely video 👍
The swimming pool was at kenton secondary modern .
And that's whole school been pulled down , and rebuilt swimming pool long gone, it's a different school ,called an academy now ,sounds daft , as its a school, should have kept it's original name and left the school standing, it wasn't that old.
And the council to blame again for pulling it to the ground.
@@christinehales4222I second that, but i hated the swimming teacher, if my memory serves me well, her name was Mrs Dunn.
Really liked this. We lived on the Cross Way for 26 years. A lot has changed.
Thanks for watching! Yes, the change that occurred over the 20th century was just breathtaking. I also found it funny to see the 'modern' office block at the junction of Kenton Lane and Kenton Road, which of course was replaced with low rise housing and then quickly forgotten.
These pictures really hit home for me ,I was born in Benwell brought up in kenton when it was first built as modern flats and houses , and then in adulthood moved to walker , kenton I loved ,made all first friends there breaks me heart to see state of it today when I visit its a dump but my heart will always belong there thanks for the memories keep em coming please thanks x

I remember being lrt out of Kenton School early ,1969 possibly ,so we could go ti kenton Bar & watch Newcastle United returning on an open topped bus ,when theyd won the Fair' cup. I adored my time at that school
Presumably you were there when Kenton School had its own swimming pool, just inconceivable now. Funny to think of the school letting you out early to enjoy being part of a community event - the Oftsed inspectors would faint at the idea of doing that today! :)
Mountfield primary school I went there as a little bairn 1960 it hadn't been built very long I loved that school and the maisonettes had just been built when we moved there from Benwell ,kenton was a brand new estate ,oh it was lovely everyone was lovely , I was just a bairn when kenton shops opened aswell .
The whole community was lovely.
I haven't lived there for many years but God I have the best ever memories of the place and people, I will always hold my best ever memories of north kenton
I would love to relive my past there.
I know it's not like that now different place and people there now, but God love kenton always in my heart ♥

Who ever wrote the Directions is totally wrong hear. Kenton village is the small opening at the end of the Old peoples home, opposite Kenton school. A small lane travelling South. The Horse and cart is coming up towards Kenton lane top side. There is a row of 5 Quarry houses opposite. on the same side as kenton school. This is no where near Ponteland road. The camera man is standing on Kenton lane Opposite kenton school and the 5 stand alone Houses.
Oh no! I'm so sorry an error has crept in. I used the location descriptions given by the Newcastle Libraries' Service for each image. Sadly this is difficult to rectify on the video :( But hopefully other viewers will see your comment and be enlightened. I'm grateful for the information and will update the website page sometime over the next few weeks 👍

Yes, it's a bit annoying some of them had inaccurate labels as I can't change them on the video, although I think they are all very nearby even if not actually in Kenton. On the other hand, I'm extremely grateful to Newcastle Libraries putting these images in the public domain, I have to email most other archives to ask permission and there's nearly always a substantial charge. I think the Librarians made a very good decision which helps keep the city's history alive. I added a few closeups because there are all sorts of little details which are easy to miss.
