  • Three pallets of ventilation equipment arrived in March 2021, and now it's time to see what's in those boxes. The main item included is the Zehnder ComfoAir Q600 enthalpy recovery ventilator (ERV). This is the Rolls Royce-no, the Tesla-of balanced ventilation systems. It's one of the most efficient ERVs on the market and is clearly the most elegant. It comes with everything you need to get it set up and running: ductwork, vents, switches...it's all there.
The video here is explained further in this article:

Disclosure: Zehnder North America provided the ventilation equipment to Energy Vanguard at no charge.

Only Energy Vanguard would use a reciprocating saw to open the Zehnder box :-). Thanks for showing such an in-depth look at the inside without a bunch of fluff.

Well, apparently using a great big hunting knife to open a box with something like earbuds in it is a thing in the "unboxing" world, so I thought I needed something bigger for the great big Zehnder box. ;~)

how did you drill a 9" hole through your band joist for the comfotubes? i have not seen any 9" hole saws.

I haven't drilled any holes yet for the outdoor vents. One of the ComfoPipe ducts will go out a crawl space vent. The other maybe through a foundation wall. I'm still figuring out the best way to do it.

So...did you get it installed? How many ACH does it provide?

Things have gone more slowly than I wanted, but this is the year it's finally happening. We just started our basement renovation, and the Zehnder ERV will be installed sometime in the next several months. Stay tuned!

Awesome. If you ever need a test house in Oregon, we can volunteer!
