Valentina’s interpretation is fascinating! Many pianists just hammer the keys as fast they can to show how amazingly good they are. But Valentina doesn’t do that, she plays extremely well but she also brings a certain calming beauty to passages that usually just hammered through. It’s truly wonderful to listen to, thank you for sharing your amazing music with us!
All the people remarking that her comment about Yuja Wang being rude...I don't see it that way at all. I think she was legitimately stating that Liszt arranged a slightly simplified version of this song and she mentioned the most famous performer of that version so that you might know what that version sounds like. I don't think she was putting down Yuja Wang at all--in fact, I think by mentioning her, she was acknowledging that Yuja Wang's version is the most widely known performance of Liszt's Erlkonig.
+Victoria Rodgers I agree totally with your perception. Thanks Victoria! (as a matter of fact I LOVE LISITSA and YUJA! -and Khatia, and Hèléne, and Martha, and Anna and Urska, and Natalie, and... I Love Music)
Merci Valentina!
I have always loved this piece, even as a small child (if you can imagine that). I have a very old 78 RPM record of it with Alexander Kipnis singing. This is a wonderful performance, I just love it.
There is a feeling of dynamic and sharpness in the performance, it is a wonderful technique. Sound quality has strength and competence is outstanding. Greetings from Japan . Sayonara ❗
Probably my favourite interpretation along with Murray Perahia's. What I love about her performance is even though it's an arrangement by Liszt, she brings out the nuances in Schubert's writing better than all other performances of this piece which make it sound more like Liszt than Schubert. Even though I don't usually like transcriptions - this is an exception. Fantastic.
Very interesting integration of the solo part into the solo accompaniment. Only the splendor that is your performance could pull such a wonderful integration off. Thanks for posting this. :)
Ms. Lisitsa, you brilliantly portray the narrator as relatively relaxed at first but increasingly desperate as the story unfolds; the father as oblivious yet, as time passes, subtly aware, yet helpless in the face of the tragedy unfolding; the son as appropriately alarmed and increasingly hysterical, and perhaps best of all, Der Erlkönig (with the arpeggios) as seemingly playful, yet seductively evil. You have yet again enriched our lives with your incredible talent, and for that I thank you.
Didn't know if I'd like a piano transcription, the words are so powerful. But your playing (at RAH, which I listened to on RUclips) just devastated me. I was overwhelmed with the urge to rescue the poor boy and in tears by the end. I couldn't get the ominous sound of those hoofbeats out of my head for hours afterward. Brava!
Your interpretation makes me laugh out loud, not because it is funny but because it is so full of artistic spirit that it baffles, intrigues, excites, and fills me with joy all at the same time. That is such a funny combination that I end up just shaking my head and laughing after nearly every clip.
I was anticipating the arrival of this awesome piece it is truly epic! I love your playing Valentina and you should really play this at your next concert in June. At the end of your playing in my head there were sounds of a massive applause, great job as always Valentina! :D
I was in your concert on Thursday, 2.2 in Helsinki. The concert was great, and it was amazing to hear that less often played concerto! And Chopin nocturne was absolutely awesome. The only thing that was left me to carve, because I didn't come to talk to u and ask for autograph on the bus on the way to the airport. I was in the bus :). First I didn't believe that you would be there, and when u were taking ur colorful suitcase, i realized it is really Valentina! Thanks alot from coming to Finland
Valentina is amazing as always! Her playing is so intense and powerful and yet she can provide so many colors on the piano. She master the keyboard without any hesitation! Bravissima 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Valentina! Oh how I love. Awake, press play, open thy ears, float; Yes, so much emotion leaps from each note! Close thy eyes, pen to paper, write; A masterpiece, so close, in sight!
Успехов Вам! maxim_tuner_bodger
I love that poem and this music is as always out of this wolrd in both interpretation and composition... Valentina I saw your concert in August in Bogotá, Colombia, can't wait!!! I'll be saving money just to go to see you that night!
@ValentinaLisitsa I can't wait! Actually the lights which are a bit dim create a misterious mood which is perfect for the Erlking! (And it's always good to do it for sound, because a good pianist can fill the darkness with the light of music ;))
Sarah Brightman sings a version of this Goethe poem in her song "Figlio Perduto" with the music of Bethoveen 7th symphony, 2nd movement. Very beautiful poem, very beautiful music from Sarah Brightman, and fantastic interpretation from Valentina. Bravo, Valentina!
@ValentinaLisitsa AHA you make it sound so easy aha, thanks for the advice, i love listening to you play, its so faithful to the score but always has your own touch and i cant help but smile when u play. :) hoping to be as good as you one day :p
Thxs for the English trans - again! Interesting energy in a piece with such a maudlin and pessimistic theme - kind of where Schumann ended up, methinks.... Oh, genius playing though! I think it needs the pace you have here, for what it's worth....
ooh valentina you are the chosen one! your virtuosity is truly a gift sent from above, you are better than argerich, kissin, volodos, richter, horowitz, gilels, and arrau combined. Liszt himself probably was no match for the likes of you!!! thank the lord for sending you down to teach all us little people how to REALLY play the piano, surely no one understood before you came along
Her one is far better than yuja wangs 0:24 this notes are soo clear on my point I think she let goes oof the pedal a second and while playing the left soft and smoothly soo fascinating Valentina.. love you as always ❤❤😊😊
Stunning! great technique. i'd like 2 hear a little more contrast between the 3 voices. here they sound much alike--but maybe it's the mic? I had an interesting experience with this piece. As a singer & pianist, I often accompany myself. I came across this n my Schubert piano anthology. Thought: great & started playing. 1/2 way thru, my hand were about 2 fall off--I thought, what the heck? Had to quit. Then noticed it was the L. transcrptn! Great job Valentina on a devilishly, hard, piece.
I love your playing. Your playing speed and sharpness in every tone you play ^^ especially Rachmaninoff prelude in g sharp minor op #32 and Beethovens "Moonlight" Sonata op 27 # 2 Mov 3. Do you have any advice for those who plays piano, or a wisdom ? ^^
OMG i love this piece, im currently learning it :D sooooo hard but such a nice piece to play, i also love the original operatic version composed to the poem, i love the countertenor David Dq Lee singing this piece. would you recommend it as a piece for me to play during my grade 8 exam????????
@ValentinaLisitsa Play Erlkonig as part of a Schubert/Liszt set (no one can touch you in this repertory) to start recital. Then play Ave Maria as an encore (like a pleasant, but delayed echo) to bring audience full circle back to magical opening moments. They will go crazy after this, so prepare to play many more encores! I will forward you my "wish list" of encores later.
Valentina eres EXTRAORDINARIA. El tema que has interpretado es francamente dificil y tu lo has ejecutado de una manera magistral.
@ValentinaLisitsa Amazing! Is there any chance you can come and play the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool while you're in England? There's a choice of 3 Steinway concert grands. I won't be able to get to London :-( being a broke student and all . . . ( not that I'm suggesting you come for just me ;-) ) Liverpool would love you! And thank you for all the quality free music you post for us on RUclips!
This Schubert lad is quite interesting! Let's publicize him!
Lol! I see what you did there.
The number of times I've seen jokes like these...
I could write you a Liszt.

Finally someone who has the perfect tempo, I spent almost an hour searching for the perfect rendidtion of this great piece

Liszt's ossias were generally harder passages than easier ones - they definitely weren't ossia facilite types
Is the comment still there?

January 2021, this is the best version i've seen on RUclips, bravo @ValentinaLisitsa ❤️

I think you should listen to this song again
brilliance ,poetry. Who could ask for a better performance.THank you, Ms Lisitsa

This is so powerful, so well played, better than in some of her public performances of this piece. Just marvellous.
Wow!! You are the Best pianist Valentina!!! Thank you!!!
I was anticipating the arrival of this awesome piece it is truly epic! I love your playing Valentina and you should really play this at your next concert in June. At the end of your playing in my head there were sounds of a massive applause, great job as always Valentina! :D
How very wonderful. Many years ago I played a greatly simplified version of this. You play with such feeling.
Yay Valentina, you are by far my favorite subscribed RUclips channel!!
Thank you for so many years of brilliant entertainment!!
Happy 2012!!!
to think this piece in its entirety can also be played on the violin.... without accompaniment....
Yes the melodi with some cords...like Bach, Bruch, Paganini ...
My left fingers hurt just seeing the score. My teacher had me switch to full size and I have to stretch my fingers so far just to play octaves
Well, almost. Same melody, just simpler self - accompaniment on violin
Dynamics in this piece are beyond complicated. You are soo good Valentina. I have a role model now, thank you.
Much love, Anthony C

Valentina never ceases to amaze me :') - beautifully played.
Also thank you for posting a link in the description for the score! :D :D

Unimaginable, but it's the first known opus of Schubert... In this piece, as in a single drop the ocean, is concentrated all the genius of Schubert

O, the best way to get the music and poem together is by listening to Fisher-Diskau. Again IMHO the most fabulous performance of this piece.
