An Audience With... Dudley Moore - '81, HQ

  • When he was at his height (so to speak) Dudley did this early entry in LWT's occasional series, "An Audience With..." - shot in their Number One Studio, in front of an audience peppered with celebrities.
Later editions were more polished, but this shows us the real Dud (sic). It also demonstrates his GENIUS - note the bit where he demonstrates vamping... for SEDUCTION.
And this is MOST of the gig. For copyright reasons, I have edited out a long clip from "Arthur" - and Chris Cross singing the title song - in the hope that LWT will allow what remains to stand.

Dudley will be gone 20 years this month. He died in March of 2002. What a lovely and talented man he was and how I miss him. He was well loved by those he worked with in music and in film. The tribute his many friends gave him shortly before he died touched him deeply. Progressive supra nuclear palsy was an especially cruel disease for someone who so loved playing the piano. I watch these videos of him over and over because my love and admiration for his talent will never end.

As charismatic and funny as he is (and he really is!) the piano is his comfort zone. When he does the Schubert parody I suddenly remembered just what a fine musician he was and the Beethoven/Colonel Bogey was utterly brilliant. A man of many talents and sadly missed.

I grew up laughing thanks to Dudley and Peter Cook in the 1960s (and they're both still doing it now thanks to You Tube), and so my love for both of them runs deep and true. Dudley was such a talented, modest and adorable individual, he would've made a brilliant violinist, in whatever he put his efforts into he excelled it seems. Thanks for sharing, but mostly thank you universe, life, love, light for them and those like them!

Dudley Moore and Robin Williams were very similar. Both hilarious and absolute geniouses at what the did, both short in the body height department, and both with this inexplicable sadness in their eyes (reflecting the depression inside) once all the laughter died down. They are both missed by all of us.

... and I don't think being short is a detail, when at 17 I realize I was in the short guys club I knew I would struggle whether with women or men... easy to speak about self-confidence but it will always feel like you are compensating because once a short guy always a short guy, the only good mechanism is humor because when you start with self-derision you shortcut any attempt to get you and it becomes your way of making your presence noticed... but deep inside you will always be insecure and sad. Sure there are other demons than physical appearance but I believe there is always a correlation between the lives we lead and the way we look.

So love this musician. He played Rachmaninov piano concerto with the now-defunct Nevada Symphony Orchestra in the 90s. The performance was a fund-raiser for the Nevada Ballet. I was lucky to play one of the second violins. His slight hight didn't defer all of the women in the orchestra crowding around him before the performance. He exuded tons of charm and charisma one was compelled to be close to him. This is a treasure. Thank you for posting.

"Goodbye-ee" - it was the end theme from "Not Only... But Also" - Dud and Peter Cook's legendary Sixties TV comedy series.
The original song was a pastiche of a music hall duo (whose names I forget) one of whom played piano and sang, the other standing next to him.
This version begins with a suggestion of that version - but since Peter is not present, it moves to a big band arrangement, to close this show.

    My pleasure, Dave.
I too have a few pieces like that, including one with Dud interviewed by Judi Spiers in '92. It was a CLASSIC: like Wogan with Larry Hagman and Frank Skinner with Drew Barrymore's Mum - PERFECT chemistry between host and guest.
The Wogan was before I had video - but I put the Frank Skinner ON RUclips.
I've collected video since '81 (like this one) and every time I played the Judi interview, I wished to HELL I'd kept the VT. But VT was EXPENSIVE in those days and I was POOR!

I feel such a love for our eminent Artists...and feel suffering when I read they have diseases or illnesses.
I belive in Paradies and Jesus Christ and pray for them that they must find eternal love and happiness with Jesus Christ.
What can love and happiness give us here on Earth...compared to the most wonderful place in universe. I go around with these deep and spirituell thoughts allmost every day...and are filled with so much love for people. Perhaps because I have a suffering my self that it make me more humble for others. Here...all artists that give us soo much Joy.
    From a warm heart...
God bless them all in Jesus Christ. Amen

This was an early "Audience with..." - and an early solo appearance by Dud. I think BOTH were feeling their way slowly...

… or quickly, too, as the moment may be!
Thank you so much for posting this, Melonhead622! What a consummately skilled, huge-hearted GEM Dudley was ! Thanks to him - and his colleagues - forevermore.
