Silent Hill's success was no accident, the project was surrounded by brilliant people, from the direction (Keiichiro Toyama), to the music (Akira Yamaoka), to the art (Takayoshi Sato).
Silent Hill 2's cgi still looks so impressive even in 2022, Sato wanted to make a long lasting impact and he really did.

I've been a 3d artist for some years now and I started with Softimage XSI. The Silent Hill 2 making of was the reason I started studying back there.

I feel the need to get up and give you a standing ovation. This is an amazing video. You really put us inside the head of the man himself, and his philosophies. I'm loving every single one of this series, and I can't wait for more, especially if you eventually start delving into more stuff about silent Hill 2

he had an idea for the story of SH3 but sadly we never saw it since he quit from Konami after SH2, he said in an interview that the story was going to be similar to SH2 but that's it, he hopes to develope it on a game one day (and me too :) ).

Love how you cover every facet about Silent Hill from top to bottom. I haven’t seen a dedicated series about the makers on the platform. Amazing work! That FMV clip of Koudelka that you added in made my heart flutter, it’s one of my secret treasure faves!!

Sato Takayoshi deeply inspire me and gave me a purpose in my life at the time when I was a very depressed kid.
Since then I was lucky enough to work as a concept artist on a few projects.
I wrote to him once and the men just kindly reply...
He always seems to me like a very quiet and humble genius, he deserves waaaay more recognition!
Thank you for your hommage, great video!

It is thanks to Takayoshi specifically that I am a Silent Hill fan. I was in Gamestop in about February of 1999 and the game was in one of their demo Playstation units, connected to a TV. As I wandered the store I head the beautiful, haunting mandolin music and turned to see what it was. As I watched the cutscene I was in awe, I'd never seen such a compelling intro to a video game before. The sound, the imagery, it drew me in hard. I bought the game on the spot, knowing literally nothing about it. Not a thing. I'd never even heard the title before. But I figured that if the game was half as good as that opener, I wanted to experience it. Boy was I right.
    Thank you Takayoshi-san.

@@TheKingWhoWins Yep, I got my first Playstation in October of 1996. Resident Evil was one of the very first games I rented for it and I wound up loving the game so once I saw Silent Hill I knew it would be right up my alley.

Im not sure Sato created story and dialogues for Silent Hill 2. I know, Sato said so in one of his interviews, but:
    1. Hiroyuki Owaku listed as a scenario writer in credits, not Sato.
    2. Jeremy Blaustein made an English localization for Silent Hill 2. He only mentioned working with Owaku, like hanging around with him a lot, asking questions about story for hours every day.
I really don't know why Sato claimed he wrote dialogues and whole story for Silent Hill 2 in that interview, its just weird.
    P.S. Sorry for my English.

    • @thegamingmuse
      @thegamingmuse  3 года назад +10

Owaku is the scenario writer and primary story writer, yes, but Sato did actually help him on it! It's a detail we'll go into later on, but Sato had the idea for the main concept of the story, and ended up basically hashing it out with Owaku over time. Sato wrote a lot of character lines, including Maria's and Laura's, with Owaku mainly writing for James and Eddie. Blaustein had major influence too since he was taking what Owaku and Sato wrote and cleaning it up. It was definitely a group project, and multiple sources reinforce the idea that Sato was involved in dialogue.

I’ve waited til it was done and I’ve been binge watching this series. But this specific episode just makes me so sad/furious that Konami execs have ALWAYS stood in the way of creative visionaries for the sake of profit and boosting their own egos and accreditations.
Like. Obviously Kojima, but them telling Sato basically “either you give us the credit for your work or we won’t help you in any way whatsoever”.
Like not to be rude, but fuck them AND the pachinko machines they rode in on.

It's been 20 years since the release of Silent Hill 2, and what does Konami do to celebrate this? Absolutely nothing, completely disgraceful and shameful. Konami doesn't deserve the rights to the franchise. They should sell the rights to a developer, that will treat Silent Hill the respect it deserves.

Sato Takayoshi along with Ken Levine are ones of the top tier game designers who can combine culture and intellects with pure Arts, not for the sake of money, but for the sake of immorality. No wonder Silent Hill 1 and 2 alongside the Bioshock trilogy are one of my life changing top beloved masterpieces of games.
