    Notes about this video
    1. Watch the full 45-minute lesson here: ruclips.net/video/5r6gBYnPvP8/видео.html
    2. Really, truly, this was one the best things I have done in a long time. I absolutely loved it and gained so much from it. Thank you Anthony - what a talent you have 💫
If you are slightly curious about trying the Alexander Technique, go for it!
    3. Somehow, this lesson had more of an impact on me in one lesson than practising meditation for several years. Perhaps it's the two practices combined.
It is easier for me to think about being ‘Alexander-ed’ rather than thinking about doing mediation though. It’s something I can do in almost every moment.
    4. I wonder why this technique isn’t better known.
 Perhaps because of its simplicity?
Or maybe it isn’t radical enough to capture the attention of the masses?
I just loved it! What an impact this could have if it was widely known.
    5. Here are some questions one can ask throughout the day:
    - Am I holding tension in my body?
    - Am I using unnecessary effort to hold myself or move?
    - Am I allowing my neck to be free and my head to balance easily on top of my spine?
    - Am I allowing my limbs to hang freely and move with ease?
    - Am I aligning my body that allows for optimal balance and ease of movement?
    - Am I paying attention to my breath and allowing it to be full and easy?
I ask these questions when I remember - that wasn’t much at first but it’s becoming more frequent.
    6. To let you know, I wanted to pay for this treatment, but Anthony insisted it was on the house in return for me showing his work in this video. Thank you Anthony.

So you only had the one class? You asked how many you thought you would need. Do you still feel like your posture and your mental state match how you say you felt they were at the time of the lesson?
I’m also curious about how this relates to sleeping. If you are a side or stomach sleeper, if you curl up or lift a leg (like how some side sleepers will bring a knee up towards their chest), how that affects the feeling in your spine and neck the next morning.

I had a lot of back issues and was testing different treatments. I got stuck with the Alexander Technique. I was so fascinated by the technique that I enrolled to become a teacher. A 3,5 years training program covering 1.600 hours. Quite a dedication. And sooo worth it. I feel at ease in my bodies, most of the times, and if not I know how to reactivate the "un-doing", the calm and easy mental and physical state. Thanks for sharing your experience Laura, I really like the way you present it. And Anthony is such a good teacher!

This makes total sense and I only found this technique by reading a comment in another video after dealing with and researching on back pain for years. Funnily, I had kind of the same conclusion by myself in the recent weeks. I kind of knew about these things, but it took me years to fully understand and feel them in my body. This video just explains and shows in detail what I discovered on the surface and that it is practiced by many for years and discovered long ago. Why nobody helped me in this direction after dealing with doctors and therapists for years is beyond me. And it shows how bad our German health care system really is. Thank you for this lovely video.

I wish I could afford a course of Alexander technique! I had a lesson many years ago when I stayed with someone in London who was a teacher. It’s a bit odd as you don’t really feel they are doing much. Then after lying on the table at the end and having a bit of gentle prodding and pushing on my shoulders, I stood up and felt about a foot taller. It was bizarre. I’ve never forgotten how good that felt and hope one day to try it again some day. 😊

Even getting up from sleep to pee, I notice instantly that my shoulders are up near my neck instead of passively relaxed. I need to readjust this multiple times a day to try to correct it. Forward head stance is also needing constant check. I put all of my devices up at eye level now.

Interesting. Never heard of this before, but two items stand out- the before and after at the end- marked difference- and you're stating you felt more relaxed than after two hours in an isolation tank. I believe it was martial artist Bruce Lee who said being calm is a superpower. An actor, Bradley Cooper, said a key acting lesson for him- it took a year- was to be able to relax- that relaxation was important but took that long to learn. Must be something in it. My posture at the keyboard for so many years, writing, I must look like a pretzel. What a horrendous price for a treatment! Interesting video. Thanks for uploading.

I might have invented a new exercise. I bought a small furniture dolly. I sit on the floor with my back against a wall, then I pull my foot up as far as possible and put it on top of the furniture dolly. Then I push my foot out as slowly as possible and as smoothly as possible. Then I do the opposite and pull my foot up to my hips as slowly and as smoothly as possible. Then I do the same thing on the other foot. The thing is I can do it in 8 minutes on my right leg and only 5 minutes on the left leg. It is difficult to do it as slowly as possible without constantly stopping and starting. This exercise improves balance and control and has parallels to the first 3rd of Siu Nim Tao in Wing Chun kung fu, which trains the arms. The whole point of doing it as slowly as possible without stopping and starting is to train the connection between your body and mind and to reduce the subconscious use of antagonistic muscles; increasing speed and power.

Once I recovered, she explained that this does happen when people hold onto a lot of stress and tension then we continued. Glad to hear you found a good teacher! As you tell about your feeling very dizzy, thought it would be interesting to tell, that Alexander Technique is known for lowering performance stress imposed high blodpressure. Well, that´s what we can conclude from research. Mind that I´m talking about performance stress, which I know wasn´t the case with you. The examples are observed for musicians, both professional classic musicians in a big orchestra and students at a conservatory. One study showed, that 18 lessons of Alexander Technique was almost as efficient as beta blockers. (there was also a group that was exercising (=running) plus the controle group, but they showed no improvement, their blood pressure stayed just as high before performance as it used to.)
The reason your teacher mentioned I agree with, but on top of that, you may already have a fairly low blood pressure? And then with more grounding and allowing more circulation to the head - dizzy. When that happens for one of my pupils, I usually make them lie down on the table, and we continue there. The pressure rises again quickly to the usual level - and the phenomena "sudden dizzines imposed by chair work in an Alexander Technique lesson" usually disappears, as you take more lessons.

OMG! I am on a healing journey for a ruptured disc and so many other back and stress issues. I have watched so many of your videos and get something from each one. Mostly I learn A LOT from your videos! I'm finding someone TOMORROW that will help me with my posture and movement. I know intuitively this is at the heart of my years of back problems. I had never heard of this technique before. Thank you Laura T!

Brilliant explanation of something that has been inherently difficult to explain since Alexander himself invented it, haha. He even had to write a fourth book to further explain his definitive teachings in what he thought were his comprehensive teachings in the first three books. I've studied the technique for 30 years, 31 this year actually, and I learnt with a great teacher, Phil, an Italian who sadly passed away. Then I learnt from another great teacher who was the Alexander teacher at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Then mostly with Alice, a wonderful teacher of the technique who had had RSI in her fingers while learning to be a flautist at the Royal School of Music in Manchester. Through her pain she sought out a teacher, who happened to run the Manchester group and there they teach teachers of the technique. I used it to enhance sport at first, then after a ten year break needed to learn to sit properly for playing classical guitar, hour on hour, highly recommended.
I think the idea of the technique is complimented by the fact that you don't have to be using it per se, as it is ingrained into your habits, and for those who can't afford there's a ruck of videos that you can learn the basics from, then save for a lesson say once or twice a year. Personally, I was lucky enough to go every two weeks for 18 months, as the prices in Liverpool are a quarter, to one third of London prices, hey ho. I find that the ideas of the results can be practiced very well in Tai Chi and Chi Gong, as well as in running, Wushu, which is the sport I excel in, and literally everything, because as you so eloquently explained, just the reminder to yourself 'to allow the neck to be free, the back to lengthen and widen' and the body feel more aligned. I've put the parts in quotation marks as they were a mantra for Alexander Technique practitioners until they weren't, but still a useful tool to 'think', before 'doing'.
I think we forger that before the internet people were very communicative in their own fields, from Sir Charles Sherrington, inventor of Neuroscience, to Moshe Feldenkrais and his studies taking the complexities of his knowledge of Nuclear Physics and applying them to sport injury and recovery. There's a great free resource called openatm dot org, atm being awareness through movement. All these people were in constant contact with each other, either by direct communications, or reading each others works in the form of books, journals and pamphlets. Another great resource, and there are bits on youtube, is Milton Erickson, though you'd definitely need to create a nice environment to listen to those, as in a quiet room, and I'd advise lying down, with a blanket or such to keep warm.
On to the advancements of those enlightened techniques of the 20th century would be things like youtube and it's endless treasury of true treasures, much like this channel, here's my recommended list - Ben Patrick at Kneesovertoesguy channel, Tim Keeley at Tim Keeley channel, E3 Rehab, SpineCare Decompression and Chiropractic Centre channel, who specialises in all things joints, musculater alignment, popping tight and difficult to get to joints and so much more, highly recommend. Taro Iwamoto Feldenkrais is also an excellent channel, though mainly with shorts.
I shall get round to watching your video with Anthony, I've seen a few of his videos before and he is an excellent and very experienced teach, who I'd highly recommend to anyone with the gumption to know what's good for them. Failing that there is a list of AT(Alexander Technique) teachers easily found on the web, if you don't live near London. Some of them do move around too, for music there's a great one in Brighton, but I haven't been able to get there yet, unfortunately.

@Laura Try Well, I don't remember if I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I changed jobs. I moved from teaching Special Education in preschool to teaching Art and Ecology for Kindergarten thru 8th grade in a different school district. Although that may sound idyllic, it has been a very challenging transition. I liken it to jumping from one moving freight train to another, going faster and in the opposite direction!!! Hoping that this will be a better fit long term, with more energy to be creative on weekends and holidays. Finding the balance is key, right? Thanks so much for inquiring!! Sending positive vibes for your new year endeavors!!!!

Michael Gelbs writes in his book "Body Learning" that the "Alexander Technique eludes precise definition because it involves a new experience - the experience of gradually freeing oneself from the domination of fixed habits. Any attempt to put that experience into words is necessarily limited, rather like trying to explain music to someone who has never heard a note." Awkward Atlas- take a lesson with a good teacher!! :)

The A.T is the best thing that ever happened to me, by pure chance because of one good teacher in a sea of clueless, often expensive ones.
For people considering it there are many many issues. Firstly, you require a lot of lessons to see consistent change which is NOT guaranteed. It's very easy for teachers to go through the motions and effect no change in a pupil. Each lesson is very expensive especially in London. I found Anthony Kingsley a bit creepy as he stares at you in an uncomfortable way to suss you out. He's rather full of himself and his fee is ridiculous.
Most teachers I went to made made no positive impact, they did leave a bad taste because they wasted my time and money. All were in London, and I went to quite a few. I also thought to training but the training courses are really bad. I went to many of their so called ''schools''. Most were in private homes, cramped and totally inappropriate. All expensive and the supposed experienced teachers very precious about putting hands on students. Leaving that to the inexperienced.
A.T simply hasn't been robustly researched, codified and organised into proper training courses. Most are expensive, backward, and haphazard. There are a lot of teachers who set up a school as their retirement income, one at least supplementing her pension well into her 80's. Sad to say the teaching is stuck in the dark ages and a real mess, with lots of contradictory methods.
As it stands the A.T is only suitable for people who can afford to throw their money away. There are many alternative and cheaper ways of achieving the same things and where you are in control of what you learn. Most comments here are from A.T teachers who basically blow their own trumpet, its easy to see why its made little to no mainstream impact.

I had a one day AT lesson with a group about thirty years ago. We worked in three's at one point where one person stood and the other two gave a critique of the posture. There I was standing straight, or so I thought , only to find one shoulder was higher ,my head was side tilted, my spine leaned too far back and my pelvis tilted to one side. A true awakening.
