I liked Mr. Meaty a lot because it reminded me so much of Garbage Pail Kids, those little babies that scared me to hell with their gross out humor and body horror but at the same time fascinated me because of exactly that. In fact, when I revived the suppressed memory of GPK was around the same time Mr. Meaty came on air here in Chile
I grew up with the premiere of Mr. Meaty - I loved Sesame Street, The Muppets, Nanalan' growing up, so puppets never freaked me out, even these. I found/still find Parker's close together eyes funny, especially when his face scrunches up, and that goes for the rest of the cast. Granted, I was still "traumatized" by a few, namely Mr. Carne, The Tapeworm, and the girls when they get parts of their body removed for Josh's Meat Girlfriend; but otherwise I still enjoyed the majority of the humor at the time. Definitely a guilty pleasure for me these days.
I remember a bumper for Nick's Halloween block one year used a clip from this show and, as a kid, it always horrified me. It was one of the character slowly turning to face the camera, with his eyes all white, not having any pupils. The funny thing is; looking back at what the show was like, they really could have used a moment from any given episode and it would have been equally terrifying.
I remember very vividly the first time I viewed this grotesque monstrosity.. I was not a child but rather a young adult on a few psychedelic substances and to say the least.. It absolutely warped my state of mind in such a manner that I all but refrained from calling the network to voice my concerns about Nickelodeon exposing children to this abomination. The comedown was even worse as the realization set in that I wasn't viewing some hallucination projected onto the television that my melting grey matter had cobbled together in an attempt to hold together what few synapses were left. No, this was created, pitched to the network executives, written, and voiced by seemingly sane people who then felt the desire to air it on daytime television to large amounts of children nationwide.. What the fuck, over.
I was a toddler at the time this show came out, so I never got to see it, but a family-friend introduced me to Invader Zim and Ren & Stimpy around my tweens. I’ve only seen people discuss this show with disgust and how they were traumatized by it, but this shit is right up my alley, and I agree when you say it’s weird that people got turned off the most by this when gross out has been a standard in kids/teen media. It comes off as a stupid funny stoner show to me but with the filters set to Nickelodeon-appropriate. Thanks for reminding me to give this show a watch!
I have three interesting suggestions for future videos 1 Ena, the web series, I know some people find the series disturbing/unsettling but I love it and a video game will be made for it soon!! 2 the new DHMIS series And 3 more in the spirit of Traumathon, scary scenes in kids movies(or non horror movies) that come seemingly from nowhere, big one im thinking of(people are welcome to give other suggestions) is the ending fight scene in Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, couldn't stand that as a child and would leave the room at that point in the movie
I was around 7ish when the final episode was made I loved this show gross parts and all, I think my older brother and sister liked it too but I can't remember, I was sad when they stopped airing it (i didn't know youtube was a thing yet and it wasn't as find almost anything you want) thank you for this big nostalgia trip and for reminding me that this amazing show exists!
I saw this show when I was a toddler and apparently loved it a lot, I don’t remember much minus the episode that had Satan in it and that around that time I called the Denny’s Restaurant, Mr. Meaty’s but even as someone pushing 19 years old I find this show charming with its puppets and some jokes, I think the only problem I have with it is the random customer voices can sometimes be annoying to me. Honestly I think this show inspired a lot of my love of weird deformed designs and dark comedy in some of my art and writing. I’m glad I could remember this show for this long. I’m always happy to find out old stuff I used to remember or like and re-experiencing it, for better or for worse.
I was going to just say I freaking hate that show but seeing how the creator put a lot of heart into it and he doesn't even have copies of his own show it's pretty sad and makes me feel bad for him. Maybe I will watch it again one of these days...
YES!!! THANK YOU GOOSE!!! I LOVE YOU!!! I've been an ardent defender of this show for years now. Even when I was a kid watching it I thought it was so cool, never scared of the puppets. I'm glad you see it for the amazing gross-out comedy that it is :-) I wish so badly Nickelodeon would put the episodes on Paramount Plus. They recently added Back at the Barnyard! Which was very surprising. But that show has fared much better than this one in general, also receiving DVD Boxsets :-/ If you go to Jamie Shannon's RUclips channel, "Puppet Island," you can find some of the commercial break shorts uploaded in full... one of which even in WIDESCREEN which blew my freaking mind when I found it
As a few other people have stated I honestly loved this show as a kid and some of my fondest memories are watching it with my mom. I still think it's pretty funny and while I understand it could be scary or gross for kids I always had a good time with it and still enjoy it a lot.
They remind me of something Here in my home country we have this kids show called "31 Minutos" (31 minutes). It is the funny shenanigans of the crew running a news broadcast, and ironically it is liked much more by adults and teenagers because of how wacky the humor is The puppets were... weird, they weren't "ugly", not that much at least, but it was extreamly obvious they were hand crafted with as much off the shelf stuff as they could get. Nearly no character had two eyes of the same desing, the general asthetic of the characters shifted wildly, sometimes just using cheap knock-off barbie dolls and max-steel copias. The creators knew they couldn't get this to make any sort of sense and so they ran with it, and the show was so crazy they had one of the main characters pull out a revolver on his friends, triying to rob them to pay off his gambling addiction. It still, somehow, wasn't traumatizing, my childhood is that show, and it was genuinly funny and the songs were just AWESOME (Señora Interesante is the best), if you know spanish maybe check it out
It's weird because I saw this when I was little and I remember I actually did enjoy it. I was kinda surprised to see everyone hated it, and just thought it was a guilty pleasure.
we didn’t have cable at our house so i was always so excited that i got to watch cartoons at my babysitters house. i wanted to watch lazy town (which i wasnt allowed to watch) so i’d change the channels when she left the room or if she fell asleep and whenever these dudes came on i got so freaked out. the moment i saw their faces i’d start crying. even now it’s making my stomach hurt to look at them lol
i remember seeing just a little bit of the tapeworm episode when i was about 9? 10? and it scared me so much i had a near-debilitating fear of parasites for several years. they still ick me out now
The only episode I still vividly remember from Mr. Meaty was the tapeworm episode. The rest of the show is kind of a blur, but that episode stuck with me. Now I have a slight fear of tapeworms. Thanks, Mr. Meaty.
i loved this show as a kid. i remember playing the games on the nick website as a kid too. this wasn't my favorite show but man i loved it fr i was never freaked out by it
I think i never saw this as a kid- But i remember seeing clips from it on the internet, not fully understanding english- but beeing super disgusted and afraid because of stuff like that finger frying scene
I know so many people were traumatized/disgusted/etc by this show but as a kid? I really liked it and thought it was pretty funny. It's always so weird to see people despise/disgusted with shows I actually really liked growing up lol
😳Traumatizing? Mr. Meaty?!!?! MAN I miss that show!! It was clever, original & those adorable Canadian accents? C'mon!! That's like saying Ren & Stimpy or Cow & Chicken was traumatizing bc they were crude & relied on "toilet humor," which is what made those my FAV shows as a kid ‐‐ & why I watched Mr. Meaty as a 20‐something!
I loved Mr. Meaty so much as a kid. That kind of unsettling/ uncanny look they have gave me s love for all things wierd. Thanks for existing, Mr. Meaty.
I really liked this show as a kid, I have always been a fan on puppetry, stopmotion, claymation, ect. Back then it just had me glued in awe at the work. Plus what 10 year old boy didn't like gross out humour? Hahaha
i loved this series as a kid, but i also grew up watching stuff like ren n stimpy, invader zim, and whatever bizarre early youtube content i could get my hands on, so i guess i was more conditioned for content like it. it's insane to think it aired on nick, i really miss this era of childrens tv.
I remember seeing the tapeworm episode and I kid you not, feeling sick for days. Any time the show would come on after that, I'd get scared and change the channel lol.
I remember when the first short aired unannounced during a rerun of The Amanda Show. I initially thought it was an Amanda Show segment I must've forgotten about, probably because both shows had someone named Josh. I remember leaving the room after one of the puppet boys in the short said "She's not breathing!" The visuals and the story were unsettling, especially with no context of what I was watching! On the old official Nick message boards' "ask a moderator" section, some kid asked what that even was that aired, with a description of what was in the short. The moderator redacted the kid's description with an explanation that it was too disturbing for the message boards, and the mod answered that he/she didn't know anything about it. I remember thinking it was funny that this Nickelodeon show was too disturbing for text discussion at the official Nick site.
Dude, I fuckin' LOVED this show as a kid. It was gross and hideous and dark at times and it was great. Shows like that and Flapjack were my bread and butter.
I remember simultaneously loving and fearing this show. My brother and I were around 8 and 11 years old and we’d somehow always turn to nick when it was on and could never look away. To this day we remember this show having a weird effect on the both of us. The best way to describe it is like seeing a car wreck. You’re horrified yet can’t look away at the same time. It was definitely what opened the door to gross out horror / horror in general for me. It’s probably part of why I love body horror so much 😂
It honestly baffles me that this show scarred so many people. I was terrified of my own shadow as a kid yet I wasn't phased by these types of shows that people seem to think of as infamous.
Mr meaty is a weird one for me; I'm an insomniac, aways have been. Eventually my parents allowed me to have a TV on my room, it helped me. Mr meaty only played during the late hours of the night, and I remember vividly that I couldn't stop looking at it, it terrified me so much but... Kid me I just needed to keep looking. And I just, kept this vague memories of the episodes in my head as I grew up.
I always loved this on CBC (the channel it played on for those of you who've never gone past Maine). So did my family as a whole, since a lot of old Canadian cartoons had a similar sense of humor at the time. Grossology, Dex Hamilton and Martin Mystery for example
Honestly, upon seeing images about them when I was around 10-12 years old, I thought it was gonna be those uncanny claymation animations because of how Josh and Parker looked like.
I admit, I found this show actually funny (maybe because back when I watched this I was a teenager finishing high school), and if you want to remind me and others of unexpected trauma you should do a video on the 1-hour special on Danny Phantom: "The Ultimate Enemy"!!
Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me about this show. I used to watch a ton of it when I was, quite frankly, too young but it is what it is. I still remember the worm episode. Weirdly enough, this wasnt the thing that tramuatized me or even stuck with me the most.
that’s really weird the first time i watched mr meaty was on a nick dvd box this was when the show stopped airing i was like 5 yrs old the only episode that scarred me was peterina episode i couldnt sleep for days after that
The look of this show alone made me unable to watch cause it freaked me out. Reminds me a lot of claymation, which I owe a lot of nightmares to due to a show called "Bump in the night". Specifically the episode "night of the living bread", that slice of bread freaked me out so bad.
As someone who grew up as the series was airing, I remember loving the series. I was maybe 8 at the time, and I don't remember being scared of it. Grossed out maybe but not scared.
I remember they showed new episodes early in the morning and on a Saturday as much as I hated getting up early for school I couldn't miss the zombie episode

YTV WAS THE BEST. I have so many memories of watching YTV after school and just chilling
"Why use puppets?"
Don't Hug Me I'm Scared.
I love the new intro man. Definitely different but it works!!
i actually loved this show as a kid and watched it everytime it came on i was and still am into horror stuff
Yo! My childhood!!! This shit was like Courage; creepy & gross but SOOO addicting to watch.
I have three interesting suggestions for future videos
1 Ena, the web series, I know some people find the series disturbing/unsettling but I love it and a video game will be made for it soon!!
2 the new DHMIS series
And 3 more in the spirit of Traumathon, scary scenes in kids movies(or non horror movies) that come seemingly from nowhere, big one im thinking of(people are welcome to give other suggestions) is the ending fight scene in Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, couldn't stand that as a child and would leave the room at that point in the movie
God i remember this. I loved it.
For the longest time i thought this show was a fever dream
talking about YTV brought back memories for all Canadians and i thank you for it
I was always traumatized of that tapeworm scene and the blue guy scene
I'm glad you see it for the amazing gross-out comedy that it is :-)
I wish so badly Nickelodeon would put the episodes on Paramount Plus.
They remind me of something
Here in my home country we have this kids show called "31 Minutos" (31 minutes). It is the funny shenanigans of the crew running a news broadcast, and ironically it is liked much more by adults and teenagers because of how wacky the humor is
The puppets were... weird, they weren't "ugly", not that much at least, but it was extreamly obvious they were hand crafted with as much off the shelf stuff as they could get.
It still, somehow, wasn't traumatizing, my childhood is that show, and it was genuinly funny and the songs were just AWESOME (Señora Interesante is the best), if you know spanish maybe check it out
I'm glad October is finally here, and you know what that means. Traumathon is finally here! Long awaited.
It's weird because I saw this when I was little and I remember I actually did enjoy it. I was kinda surprised to see everyone hated it, and just thought it was a guilty pleasure.
This show came out when I was 5 or 6 and I loved it 😂
to be honest i wasn't even sure if this show existed, i only faintly remember it
we didn’t have cable at our house so i was always so excited that i got to watch cartoons at my babysitters house. i wanted to watch lazy town (which i wasnt allowed to watch) so i’d change the channels when she left the room or if she fell asleep and whenever these dudes came on i got so freaked out. the moment i saw their faces i’d start crying. even now it’s making my stomach hurt to look at them lol
i remember seeing just a little bit of the tapeworm episode when i was about 9? 10? and it scared me so much i had a near-debilitating fear of parasites for several years. they still ick me out now
I watched this as a kid, scared my parents and grandparents but I loved it.
The only episode I still vividly remember from Mr. Meaty was the tapeworm episode. The rest of the show is kind of a blur, but that episode stuck with me. Now I have a slight fear of tapeworms. Thanks, Mr. Meaty.
i loved this show as a kid. i remember playing the games on the nick website as a kid too. this wasn't my favorite show but man i loved it fr i was never freaked out by it
I think i never saw this as a kid-
But i remember seeing clips from it on the internet, not fully understanding english- but beeing super disgusted and afraid because of stuff like that finger frying scene
I love that Alien dancing in the Backrooms btw, i just wanna say that...
Meaty.
A truly hidden gem from old Nick
it aired here in brazil and i had so much fun with it
I really liked this show as a kid, I have always been a fan on puppetry, stopmotion, claymation, ect. Back then it just had me glued in awe at the work. Plus what 10 year old boy didn't like gross out humour? Hahaha
YES SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY SCARRED ME!! God the thumbnail looks fucken horrifying too, amazing job to whoever did that!
all me
@@Goose_BooseYT good job 👌
Ahh, a multi talented gentleman I see. I appreciate you furthermore 🫰🏽
i loved this series as a kid, but i also grew up watching stuff like ren n stimpy, invader zim, and whatever bizarre early youtube content i could get my hands on, so i guess i was more conditioned for content like it.
it's insane to think it aired on nick, i really miss this era of childrens tv.
It’s probably part of why I love body horror so much 😂
okay I know we aren't talking about that btxh nanalan today but HOLY SMOKES do I suddenly remember that ..?thing. extremely deep memory unlocked
Tbh, I’ve only seen a few episodes of this…but the one I always remember is the tapeworm episode. Legit thought it was a wacky dream for years.
6:48 "I dont think teens would watch puppets anyway"
Dont hug me im scared: cries at the corner
I admit, I found this show actually funny (maybe because back when I watched this I was a teenager finishing high school), and if you want to remind me and others of unexpected trauma you should do a video on the 1-hour special on Danny Phantom: "The Ultimate Enemy"!!
Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me about this show. I used to watch a ton of it when I was, quite frankly, too young but it is what it is. I still remember the worm episode. Weirdly enough, this wasnt the thing that tramuatized me or even stuck with me the most.
I loved this show when I was a kid, but I had no idea that the jingle was so cynical. That’s incredible.
11:45 this whole show is metal
I was a teen when Mr Meaty was on and I specifically remember watching it because it was puppets and I thought it was unique.
"All of god's creatures! Right of the grill!" Sounds like something like saxton hale would use for a fast food chain
This show was awesome honestly, we need more puppet shows.
that’s really weird the first time i watched mr meaty was on a nick dvd box this was when the show stopped airing i was like 5 yrs old the only episode that scarred me was peterina episode i couldnt sleep for days after that
The look of this show alone made me unable to watch cause it freaked me out. Reminds me a lot of claymation, which I owe a lot of nightmares to due to a show called "Bump in the night". Specifically the episode "night of the living bread", that slice of bread freaked me out so bad.
i remember loving mr meaty as a kid, being confused and perturbed by it as a teen, and now being sort of okay with it
the thing that always stressed me out was the manager with a meat grinder installed in his head or smth to that effect
I have the Nick Pics DVD in my dvd collection, which I watched when I was a kid. It’s crazy to see that disk is actually rare, I thought it was pretty common lol
