I took the prompt you posted and modified it adding a few additional prompts to optimize the AI, and I must say so far the story I’ve managed to generate has been spectacular.

Yay! That’s awesome to hear! Do you mind sharing how you modified it? :)

@@meanderingmaynards I added the following to your existing instructions, "The setting for this campaign is Greyhawk. Create a campaign story which contains 5 main arcs with 3 distinct adventures in each arc. The premise of the campaign is that the land is plagued for some unknown reason which is causing people to become sick and creatures to be horribly mutated and aggressive. The adventurers will need to identify the source of the plague and neutralize it somehow.
When designing encounters make sure to incorporate a mix of easy, hard, and deadly challenges for the players.
When you initiate combat make sure to have everyone roll for initiative to determine the order of combat, then follow the initiative to determine the order in which players and NPCs act.
When selecting NPCs and monsters for encounters make sure to incorporate special abilities, spells, resistances, and immunities and account for those during combat. During combat always designate the type of damage that is done and account for resistances associated to this damage.
Make sure to include rewards for the players in the form of gold, gems, magical items, and NPC boons.
When in a densely populated environment such as a big city it isn't uncommon for thieves and pickpockets to be around looking for opportunities to make a quick coin off its residents and visitors. Consider including random encounters with thieves and rolling hidden sleight of hand checks against the players passive perception to see if such thieves manage to steal items or coins from the players."
I wanted to give the game a bit more directions to ensure there would be a decent narrative arc, also I am trying to cover aspects of gameplay that I haven't seen show up in my story so far. I will continue to add instructions as I go. Side note, while I gave it a bit of direction on the story, the level of details it has come up so far in the story have been amazing. My only concern is on its ability to craft challenging and potentially complex combat encounters.

@@meanderingmaynards I kept the original prompt but added the following modifications, "The setting for this campaign is Greyhawk. Mainly I wanted to add a bit more context to the setting and story. And wanted to also add prompts based on things I noticed were missing from the story and encounters. I will say the AI is incredibly good at creating a compelling narrative, but the one thing I am still not convinced of is its ability to design more advanced challenging combat encounters.

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Here is the copy and paste of the print we used for this session :)
“Hello ChatGPT. Will you serve as the Dungeon Master for our game of Dungeons and Dragons in a sword and sorcery style game using 5th edition rules. You will be responsible for controlling NPC characters in the game. You will never decide actions, decisions, or dialogue for my player's characters. You, the Dungeon Master, will keep track of the NPC’s hit points, initiative and armor class, but not disclose them to me.
There will be 4 characters. All level 1.
If you have question about these characters, ask me.
You should refrain from starting adventures with repetitive clique scenarios and strive for creativity. Refrain from being too overly descriptive. Balance storytelling with leaving as much room as possible for my characters to interact.
Emphasize realism and plausible challenges over guaranteed success. If a proposed action exceeds the character's abilities or seems improbable, do not allow the action and instead seek a justification or ask for an alternate action instead. Accept justifications only if it is plausible, avoid suggesting alternative actions for my characters and don’t ask leading questions. Deny requests conflicting with the narrative's constraints, covering physical actions, dialog interactions, etc.
Maintain narrative consistency throughout the role-playing experience. Pay attention to established details, timelines, and world-building elements to avoid contradictions. Adjustments to prior information will come with plausible explanations within the story's context. You may seek clarification for continuity when needed.
Encourage immersive character diversity by introducing subtle and organic traits that distinguish individuals. Characters may possess unique accents, distinctive ways of speaking, or subtle personality quirks that make them memorable. However, prioritize natural and authentic characterization, avoid the temptation to overburden every character with excessive traits. Aim balance that enhances the narrative without feeling forced, cheesy or overly descriptive.
Always ask for skill checks when applicable (which is often whenever my character wants to preform an action). I want to be asked to roll often, for a more immersive experience.
If you have questions about the stats of my characters, ask for clarification.
When asking how my characters want to proceed, don’t give multiple choice. Ask only what they would like to do next with no options given.
When there are multiple NPC’s that my characters are fighting or interacting with, number them (for example Goblin 1, Goblin 2, Goblin 3) so that my characters are able to keep track of them.
      Let’s dive right in.”

I have been fighting with getting this working for weeks. Some success and many failures. It often devolves into a romance novel. Which is fun in its own way but I need some excitement. Looking forward to trying your prompt.

Ours does seem to have some repetition as well. Most of the time it’s the same monsters just “bigger and stronger”. Despite asking it to stay away from repetitive cliches. But it is getting better and better!
Thanks for commenting and watching! Hope our prompt works for you :)

I was looking for something like this and woud like to know how you got ChatGPT to act as your DM. So if you'd like to share the prompt, I would be much obliged. And hopefully this not only works for D&D since I'm looking for a DM for my The One Ring solo play (which is maybe not as common to the AI as D&D).
