  • Where are the deer bedding?! It's a common question, especially for hunters who are hunting in big woods. Finding the "Buck beds," or the areas that deer frequently bed in can be a challenge. This video highlights one of our favorite ways to diversify the farm and improve the bedding. Young forest pockets or "micro clear cuts" can be one of the quickest ways to create defined bedding areas on your farm.
Young forest not only provides great cover and bedding but also high quality forage that's available almost year round!

What do you do when you clearcut like this, but all that comes in is a carpet of Japanese Stiltgrass? Killing it with glyphosate, it just comes back from the seeds, and it smothers all other regeneration except stump sprouts.

Do you just leave the tress lay or do you move them?

Hey Matt. Awesome video. I’m out on my property falling some trees for winter browse. So if I can’t have fires in my area how do I keep the vegetation down over time
I understand that in 6-7 years I can do another flush cut but in 2-3 years what can I do. Also I have hay fields. Should I let them grow into Early secessional of growth ?
    Thank you

How often will you burn those areas in the future? How can you tell if an area needs to be burned?

Love the video! Putting this on my winter to do list. How many of these micro clear cuts would you recommend having in a 55 acre mixed hardwood forest?

Jerry Sauber all depends on the layout of the property but shoot for at least 5

See if you can Sell Timber for Profit to Create a field.
Several mature Oaks or shade trees 🌳 left in the field are optimal. Even white cedar clumps.

Tree Climber we 100% promote the forestry industry. If timber value is present we advise the sale. Here in the ozarks there are many acres of low quality timber that’s been abused or neglected for too many years, in these cases a simple clear cut is best

You could only walk around the edge, how can this be valuable to wildlife?

    • @Landandlegacytube

Oh no you can totally navigate this area. If it had been hinge cut you wouldn’t be able to navigate it but you can totally walk through this area

I have 225 acres just North of the Muskoka region in Ontario. It's a mix of conifer, hardwoods, and some wetland too. I have some work to do! Thanks for this video.

Would you leave any soft woods hinge cut along the sides or anywhere else? My property is basically a 10-15 year old clear cut that has a high stem count. Lots of sweet gum. I thought about making a linear food plot through the middle of it and then cutting everything else off to the sides and laying it down. Spraying all the sweet gum trees once I cut them. I wanted to clear an area to plant some oaks and chestnuts as well as some soft mast trees. Didn't know if I should hing cut any of the trees off to the sides of the food plots

Depends on the size of your deer herd. If you have more deer than you have available food then hinge cutting would be fine. Deer would maintain the regrowth & you wouldn't have to come back and re cut all of them when they grew out of height for a deer to reach. Problem with hinge cutting is it often requires additional labor if not managed by fire or if deer do not keep it browsed down.

I have a 2 acre that looks like it use to be bush hogged but has grown up for the last couple of years I'm guess. Should I bush hog it or let it go?

This was super helpful. Do you explain how to cut lanes or paths to hunt this new browsing area?

    • @Landandlegacytube
      @Landandlegacytube  3 года назад

We typically don’t cut lanes. Mixing in hinge cuts, and flush cuts the deer navigate the area just fine. We just hunt the downwind side of the areas with great success

Another was "ya gotta keep the tree alive so therefore hinge cut it." The video gives a visual of the proof that flush cutting is the superior technique!
