I followed your tutorial and made a pillbox hat to wear for a wedding, as a bridesmaid. I just added one circle of padding on top because it turned to be too tall with more than that. It was so pretty and I got lots of compliments! Thank you for this tutorial!
millinery wire is just as inexpensive as regular wire, but is wrapped in rayon so its easier to work with and definitely a better choice for hat making if you can get your hands on some :)
Fun tutorial! I’m finishing the final stitching on mine today :) I got to the part where you sew the top to the band and realized my hat was bigger than I wanted so I took it apart and started over. Now i think it’s slightly smaller and taller than I wanted lol. Sooo what I’m saying here is that the mock-up she suggested is really a good idea. It might actually save you time (and sore fingers) in the end.
Awesome! I've been having a bit of a slow time with coming up with sewing ideas so I decided to challenge myself to make at least one outfit from each decade from 1910 to 1980s and the pill box hat was totally a needed accessory!
I swear, I'm going to send you all my vintage hats and jewelry. My grandmother worked at the jewelry counter at JL Hudson's in Detroit when it was the wealthiest city in the USA, about 1950-60; I inherited some fabulous stuff. I wore the pieces in the 80s, when I was first working, but it'd be so nice to know they were enjoyed again, and maybe even providing inspiration for a few garments!
Wow, what an interesting history! I'm sure you were better dressed than most people in the 80's (though perhaps that isn't saying much haha)! I've gotten more into vintage clothing recently (both sewing and buying it) and I swear half the fun of wearing it is thinking about the life it had with its original owner. I guess I feel that way about all antiques - I have some prints from the 1800's and it's crazy to think how different the life of its original was to mine (and how different the world was)! I do have a PO box if you ever feel compelled to pass something along! Just shoot me an email and I would be happy to provide it. :)
Angela Clayton so lovely of you to reply! You just look so very pretty in all historical and vintage styles, it'd be a pleasure to see some of these gorgeous old pieces serve as inspiration and convince more people that the simplicity and *quality* of clothes before fast fashion is worth returning to.
What gauge wire did you use? Do you think that a tight weave burlap (upholstery) would work for this darling hat? I will make the base as soon as I can! Thank you for your easy to understand tutorial! I am making a linen pillbox hat (natural color) to match my vintage linen duster. I wish that I could send a photo! Beloved has bought for vintage suits for me that just scream for hats! I have my templates and supplies, and Moby Stick (my sewing machine) is more than ready! I will be visiting your other tutorials, as I dress in 1930's-1950's styles. As a 60-year-old Southern lady, I truly appreciate the ability to create my own clothes, hats and other accessories.
Stunning I had a retro pillbox JackY Kennedy Baby Pink hat just like that. I love the basic box hats as much as designs. Feels like we’re headed to New England
Thank you for the excellent tutorial! I've already made four pillbox hats -- two for boucle suits, one for a dress/coat ensemble, and one for a leopard coat. These were all vintage outfits I had in my closet and I was able to find the matching fabric as skirts under the same brand on eBay. You're so talented...love your artistry, skill, and passion!
I'm from Brazil and I just loved your videos. It's been a long time since I've been looking for tutorials like this. Thank you very much for showing us this !!! Could you make more tutorial videos ??? we would be very grateful. Sorry for my bad English...
Awesome tutorial, watched it a million times and finally made one in an afternoon. One thing I did differently though, and really helped, was when finally installing the rim/perimeter I basted the fleece and top instead of pinning it, so there was no struggle with the pins holding the top. Once installed I removed the basting stitches. Hope that helps someone! xx
Angela, Thank You for sharing your knowledge. I included this video in my private playlist. I enjoyed your tutorial very much. I picked up one of your patterns and look forward to completing one of your creations in the near future. JCCP
Nice hat. I just made two hats, one for me and one for my son, based loosely on the styles of hats worn by people of the Central Asian steppes. We do LARPing. But during the warm weather, I wear a vintage pillbox hat with this costume (somehow it works!) and now, thanks to you, I’ll finally be able to keep it on my head while we run through the woods - I’ll sew in a hair comb. Pins just weren’t working!
I like the larger size, especially on you. It suits your hair and face (as does the color). Sometimes the small ones, while being cute and dainty, can be too small and end up making the wearers head look massive.
Okay, I was already in love with you and what you do, but then you whipped out that FOB album and I was even more in love. Thanks for the tutorial, Angela. Looks amazing as always!
I'm so excited by everything you're planning to do this year! And the hat & the way you've styled with it, is adorable :) Have you ever done a hat with a veil? I don't recall. One of those ultra glamorous black veils with spots on it...
I love this tutorial! You inspired me to start sewing again and I really want to try to do some easy hats as I love wearing them, but I had no idea how to do that. I will definitely try that one in the future!
I've just started the millinery portion of my fashion degree, and I am SO excited to start a pillbox hat. Fascinators and felt hats were a pain to make so it's a relief that this process looks easier. Great video, I'll definitely be using some of your tips to help the process go smoothly! :3
I have made fourteen pillbox hats, inspired by this video! Most are linen, but a few are velvet or satin...various sizes. One thing that I began doing differently was to make one hat, completely covered in the nice fabric, and making separate, interchangeable bands (my laziness knows no bounds). I have pho6if you are interested, Ms. Clayton. I recently bought a vintage boucle suit. Since I am 5'2", and this skirt is 39" long, I plan to re-hem it and make a pillbox hat with the excess material. Do you have any advice for working with bouclé?
Angela you are simply incredible!!! I could sew and craft with you for everrrrr!!! Just out of curiosity do you have a P.O. box? I recently got into sewing and costuming. I made my first Tudor dress and have a second in progress. Your videos totally inspire me. I’ve been a jewelry maker/beader for years and I’d like to send you a piece if that’s ok. ❤️
I didn't catch the name of the inner material you used to sew the wire on. Would you mind to repeat it for me? :) Your Tutorials are making me very happy. As a sewing-beginner they are perfect to practice
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I just finished my pillbox hat today, following each steps of this video. I have always wanted a pillbox hat. This was my first sewing project and my hat looks very neat. It actually took me a total of 10 hours to make it though, but it was a lot of fun! I spent a lot of time on measuring and testing things, making sure it would fit perfectly. It is surprising how adding a few millimeters to the diameter increases the circumference by a lot. At the end, I added 2 combs instead of just one so it stays better on my thin and straight hair. Thank you again, this was the best tutorial to make a pillbox hat! :)
Could I use bendy wire for this hat? If it's too delicate, maybe I could twist two pieces of wire together? Also, thank you for making such a simple tutorial. Most people either overcomplicate things or leave out certain steps that beginners might not know about.
Not sure what bendy wire is (doesn't most wire bend?) I'd highly recommend buying the 18 gauge stuff. Thinner wire may break and cause the hat to lose its shape over time. And I would worry about twisting wire together since that makes it thicker and harder to work with (and not necessarily stronger).
This is a really good tutorial. And this is a nice idea for hat making because I have never done hat making. I will definitely try this out. And this hat is sooo cute!
This is great & helpful for me since i have to make one for my NWMP costume. All i have to do now is to fight with the fabric to make the pattern on top.
I'd like to! I worry about them getting too long with more elaborate ones like the medieval headpieces. But a lot of my hats are just rectangles and circles which *should* translate okay into a step by step tutorials...so maybe an Edwardian or 18th century hat will be next :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! :D I tried it out and although it got a little bit to large (with a hat pin it shouldn´t be a problem) it worked out perfectly! I will defintly do this again!
This is such an amazing video! You described everything perfectly. What kind of surface did you use where you pinned the interfacing onto, for it to stay in place? Do you know what I mean? :-) Edit: i mean the one at minute 2:58
My table has a layer of homasote on top, which is a dense fiber board that you can press pins into! Super handy addition to the sewing room! Just a little hard to get home since it comes in massive sheets...
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I really needed to learn this skill for an up coming project to match a special dress. Do you think a medium linen would work for the top fabric? That's the fabric I wanted to match! ??? Thanks again!!! :-)
Whoops had to recomment , well that Balmain whooooooo! Love it , y have a way with these patterns , stunning, I loved your cocktail dress last year. I'm a greyhaired gal to
Have you considered getting involved in a local amateur theatre company or high school play costume department? I’m sure they would appreciate the help and it could give you some hands on experience in a relaxed atmosphere and some great work experience to help you get into the industry. Just a suggestion because I care and believe in you ;)
New subscriber. I love your videos and especially the hats, you do them well. I may try making one but for now I will be redesigning a cowl neck top for a friend. Your videos are far more interesting than what I'm working on. tfs
what is the actual interfacing you are using? also, do you know how to use 4" hovotex crinoline for apparel? (the texture is stiff, but feels like paper.)

I collect old hats, but never thought of making one. You've given me courage. So, a trip to JoAnn's tomorrow!
It’s been five years, how did the first hat turn out and have you made more??????
Fun tutorial! I’m finishing the final stitching on mine today :) I got to the part where you sew the top to the band and realized my hat was bigger than I wanted so I took it apart and started over. Is that pink fabrid going to be made into a Jackie Kennedy/ Chanel style pink suit?
I don't have enough for a suit, but it will get a matching 60's style work dress in the near future!
I was thinking very Jackie o as well
mspatti It would be fun to see the 'Jackie Kennedy' Chanel suit being made, I agree!
I thought of Jackie too. Interesting how one person can be so iconic. 🤔🙂. She had such amazing style and grace.
that would be good.

Very informative and this is the first video I have found that shows how to make a hat without a mold. Thank you for a great video!
What gauge wire did you use? Do you think that a tight weave burlap (upholstery) would work for this darling hat? I will make the base as soon as I can! This is definitely the best pill box hat tutorial I've seen. Thank you for this video
This was such a reassuring and easy-to-follow tutorial!
I am in love with the way you styled it in this video. This color suits you really well. The material is gorgeous as well !
Stunning I had a retro pillbox JackY Kennedy Baby Pink hat just like that. I love the basic box hats as much as designs. Feels like we’re headed to New England
I'm so excited to try this. After finishing the crown s2 I'm loving 1960s accessories and this one seems pretty easy!

That's gorgeous, you're beautiful, and such an amazingly fast instructor. So happy I found you on RUclips! You go girl!!

Very good skills in communication, transferring knowledge and specific skills beyond basic sewing
Angela, Thank You for sharing your knowledge. I included this video in my private playlist. I enjoyed your tutorial very much. I picked up one of your patterns and look forward to completing one of your creations in the near future. JCCP
My goodness, it really is easy. I would never have thought so. Thanks for sharing this.
Nice hat.
I just made two hats, one for me and one for my son, based loosely on the styles of hats worn by people of the Central Asian steppes. We do LARPing.

I CANNOT sew to save my life, but understood your directions! Wish I could do this! Turned out beautiful!
I like the larger size, especially on you. It suits your hair and face (as does the color). Sometimes the small ones, while being cute and dainty, can be too small and end up making the wearers head look massive.
Could you do a tutorial on how to place the hat with the comb? I'm a little confused as to how it works and stays on lol
Rachael Flores exactly what I was thinking lol
I am really wondering about this too!
Hi Angela , have you ever thought about wedding dresses through the ages , Vintage is very nice they had pill box hats with vails xx.
I love looking back on old bridal fashion! I don't have any active plans to recreate any, but maybe some day!
You have GOT to make a pink Chanel suit to match this Jackie Kennedy hat. My sewing consists of a whip stitch. You are very talented.
Beautiful hat! You could be Jackie Kennedy with your style. And thank you, the directions were easy to understand.
BEAUTIFUL. and pink really is a good color on you, great makeup.
Did you learn to make hats by a book? if so can you link them? I've been inspired to learn!
Okay, I was already in love with you and what you do, but then you whipped out that FOB album and I was even more in love. Thanks for the tutorial, Angela. Looks amazing as always!
Wonderful tutorial. I followed the instructions and made a beautiful wedding fascinator! Thank you so much.
I'm so excited by everything you're planning to do this year! And the hat & the way you've styled with it, is adorable :) Have you ever done a hat with a veil? I don't recall. One of those ultra glamorous black veils with spots on it...
Thank you - I'm just learning to make hats for dolls. These tutorial are so valuable.
I love this tutorial! You inspired me to start sewing again and I really want to try to do some easy hats as I love wearing them, but I had no idea how to do that. I will definitely try that one in the future!
Your voice is so calming, I love it! I have a big exam tomorrow and this video helps me to calm down. :)
Obviously, the hat is wonderful :*

No matter what you make it suites you the hat is amazing
Finally I know how to sew wire to interfacing, thank you so much for the tutorial.
I love this hat and your overall look. Thanks for the tutorial, I find your work so inspiring.
The winged liner is ADORABLE on you! Always love your videos! Great job!
i can't wait to get my sewing machine back so i can follow your tutorials! i have been loving the vintage tutorials :)
What a great video. I remember Jackie Kennedy and her pillbox hats, and this is tempting to make. Thank you!!
You really made it a lot more difficult than needed 😂
Just made one following your tutorial. Turned out great! Can't wait to wear it somewhere.
Loved this hat tutorial, hope you can make more hat tutorials in the future. I can't wait to try it out myself
Hi Angela, thanks for the lovely videos, Im going to try this one, how long did it take you to make the hat please?
That is such a lovely color of pink.
I love your illustration Angela

The hat is so cute! Also your makeup in this video looks great
Love it I've always wanted to open a cute little hat shop hats are so handsome. The UK have gorgeous ones.
I didn't catch the name of the inner material you used to sew the wire on. Would you mind to repeat it for me? :)
Your Tutorials are making me very happy. As a sewing-beginner they are perfect to practice
Beautifully done and beautiful worn.

Great tutorial! Very relaxing watching this video.
Super cute, Angela! Well done!!
Amazing video!! Can't wait to make one! Can you do a bonnet tutorial?
Carlee Whitlock I totally agree
Best tutorial ever ! xx how much fabric will i be needing for this?

Im so happy you did this video. Ive loved your hats and headpieces and wished you would do things on those as well
This is a really good tutorial. And this is a nice idea for hat making because I have never done hat making. I will definitely try this out. And this hat is sooo cute!
That's a lovely dress or shirt you're wearing. I love the colour of the pillbox hat. 💕
This is great & helpful for me since i have to make one for my NWMP costume. All i have to do now is to fight with the fabric to make the pattern on top.
yaaaaay finally a hat tutorial :D will you be doing more complicated hat tutorials in the future?

I love your hats. Is there a book you can recommend for the beginner?
If you want a round hat, use a plate or saucer that is the diameter you want for the pattern, much easier than making your own!
I'm very interested in seeing an updated room tour! That table you use in most of your videos has me very intrigued. Is it a Styrofoam top?
Thank you so much for this tutorial! :D I tried it out and although it got a little bit to large (with a hat pin it shouldn´t be a problem) it worked out perfectly! I will defintly do this again!
awh your makeup and outfit looks so nice
Love the hats. Easy instructions.
Adorable and simple hat! I now want to make something similar!
Yiu are so sophisticated looking in that style hat.
This is such an amazing video! You described everything perfectly. What kind of surface did you use where you pinned the interfacing onto, for it to stay in place? Do you know what I mean? :-)

I just subscribed yesterday what was I waiting on lol. Can you do a tutorial on how you actually draft your patterns
Oh my goodness , this will go perfectly with my WW2 era skirt and jacket! Thank you!!!!😍😘😍
Way Cool!!! So pretty too! Thanks for sharing!!! 🫂🫂🫂❤️✨
Thank you for this tutorial, I needed this for Dapper Day 😊
I see McCalls is advertising an orange pillbox hat featuring you. Is it the same as this pattern?
Whoops had to recomment , well that Balmain whooooooo! Love it , y have a way with these patterns , stunning, I loved your cocktail dress last year. I'm a greyhaired gal to
I'm definitely going to use up some excess fabrics to do this!!
I finally found interfacing and ordered some yay
This was so helpful! Thanks for the inspo!
I like how you use the wire instead of other means.
Where did you learn to sew? I'm having a hard time finding a sewing community since very few people still actually sew clothing.
Have you considered getting involved in a local amateur theatre company or high school play costume department? I’m sure they would appreciate the help and it could give you some hands on experience in a relaxed atmosphere and some great work experience to help you get into the industry. Just a suggestion because I care and believe in you ;)
Wow! Great tutorial! I really enjoyed watching and I'm amazed at your skill. Maybe I will try ;) Beautuful hat!
Very interesting tutorial, thank you so much.
Thanks so much my dear but what if you want the hat in a cone shape how do you cut the width
Thank you
I love it... going try and make a couple. Thank you for sharing.
New subscriber. I love your videos and especially the hats, you do them well. I may try making one but for now I will be redesigning a cowl neck top for a friend. Your videos are far more interesting than what I'm working on. tfs
I suggest purchasing the book - From The Neck Up, An Illustrated Guide to Hatmaking by Denise Dreher.
impressive tutorial!
Avon calling!! Pill boxes always make me think of Edward scissor hands
Amazing tutorial! Keep going, you're great 😁
You’re amazing!!!! I love your videos
what is the actual interfacing you are using? also, do you know how to use 4" hovotex crinoline for apparel? (the texture is stiff, but feels like paper.)
