Originally this song was written by Will Shade, of The Memphis Jug Band, back in the 20's. The definitive version is by Al Wilson of Canned Heat. But Katie is beautiful and talented. Good for her to show that she is aware of great stuff from the past.
I love this song. I loved the canned heat original but I think she adds something new. The studio versions better. I think it captures the relentless pull of the road...both the rolling rythmn but also the nervous feeling that you're on a journey that just can't stop. If you've travelled, you'll get it
It's an excellent song for sure. The b&w Canned Heat is probably closer to the original, but I really love the way Katie does it. The drummer is really getting into it too.
Canned Heat weren't the first to do this song anymore then Katie was. Bluesman Floyd Jones did it in the 1950s, the Mississippi Sheiks in the 1930s and Bluesman Tommy Johnson recorded it in the late 1920s.

I personally think Blind Owl can be proud of his and Canned Heat's version. This version may cause him to rotate in his grave (I would rotate in my grave if I was dead!). Not that Ms Melua can't sing - she obviously can, but she and this band don't seem to understand where the strength of this song lies. Just my humble opinion.
They simply made a more normal Blues version. Less psychedelic... I like the Canned Heat version better also but what's the matter... Katie and her band do a great job!

Always liked canned Heats version and despite what some posters are saying, also like this version. Just different. Certainly has good musicians backing her. Katie doesn't make it all sugary, so what's the gripe.
I think the problem is that some people get stuck in a time warp and think that if a particlar artist has recorded a song no one else should touch it. They winge in the same way if someone attempts a Bob Dylan song, but Dylan himself once said in interview that he was primarly a song writer and he liked as many people as possible to record his songs.
This is a great song by Canned Heat but Katie's version is much better. I like to watch her sing it because she puts so much passion in it. Check her out singing "Blues In The Night" a classic by Cab Calloway from the 1940"s. What a talent. I just love this girl.
Katie is pretty cool. I like the original version better though. I'll give you the reason too: It's the hight tone the singer uses. But, I have to admit, the first minutes or so of Katie's version rules, because of the acoustic sound. The piano kinda blows it, but hey, that's just my opinion. I'm just saying, great music can be found anywhere :-) Peace
