  • While there are a lot of cruise lines out there, when it comes to the United States, two main players come to mind: Carnival and Royal Caribbean.
If you’ve never taken a cruise… or you’ve only sailed with one cruise line or the other… then you’d be forgiven for thinking that both Carnival and Royal Caribbean are exactly the same. While they share a lot of similarities, there are also some major differences.

I enjoy both. Carnival is indeed the FUN ship. From the moment you get to the port, while on the ship and getting off the ship. It is a fun experience. Royal Carribean is like a nice hotel floating on the water, fun and more laid back, relaxing.

We stopped booking RC. New Years Eve was so lame on RC. They tried charging $150 to rent cabanas by the pool for the NYE party. The cabanas sat empty all night and the atmosphere was strained and uncomfortable. Many people left before midnight. We have noticed RC heading this way before Covid and now after it's just not worth the money to be in a long line for nearly every activity and for the cruise director not be able to get the atmosphere at least happy, if not a full on party. Carnival is fun, less expensive and less crowded. So that is our choice now.

I been on two different carnival cruise and I did not like either of them. It was not a fun ship and not much to do. I think it was one of there smaller ship. I think the larger the ship is the more fun you will have. I was board. Not alot of activities to do on the ship. However I did like the port places I went to.

  • @kiwikiwi2483
    @kiwikiwi2483 3 года назад +377

As someone who's been on both,
Carnival is more about the fun and entertainment aspect. When you're boarding a Carnival ship, expect a party and just a overall good time 24/7. By the time your cruise ends, you'll know exactly who your cruise director is and you'll even remember them after the trip!
Royal Caribbean is more grand, luxurious, and relaxed (when you want it to be). With Royal Caribbean, it is not fancy per se but it is a bit more classy than Carnival cruises. With ships like the Symphony of the Seas, it's so big, it's truly like a city.
I think you should try both cruise lines if financially viable. They are both amazing in their own ways. If possible and for the best experience, I suggest that for Carnival you try the Vista class ships (or the Mardi Gra when it comes out). For Royal Carribean, I suggest any one of the Oasis class ships

I've been on 2 Carnival, 6 Princess and 1 Royal Caribbean. The Royal Caribbean was BY FAR the worst cruise out of them all. The bartenders were horrible and not friendly, didn't have hardly anyone walking around asking if you needed anything by the pool areas, and some of the outdoor bar/lounge areas never opened until after 2pm...WTF??! The food was nowhere near as good as Carnival or Princess either. Other than dealing with younger kids on a Carnival cruise and old people on a Princess cruise, I'll take them any day over Royal Caribbean.

On both ships, it is always a heart warming treatment for us to be catered with our own local cuisine & desserts while on board. On our end - having Galveston as our departure port, I've notice Carnival has more destination port options at any giving time. We would always leave the ship with heavy hearts making friends with the crew members and the people we've met during our sail.

Since that was my very first cruise, that was the most fun I’ve ever had, I didn’t really care about the size of the ship. In my book, there was plenty for me to do. I agree. The service on Carnival Horizon was outstanding! Our main dining waiters knew us by first name on Day 1, tried hard to convince us to enjoy the formal night even though we did not pack any formal wear. We asked for some crème brûlée for dessert and they packed us 3 to take with us and even offered to pack steak and lobster since we insisted we couldn’t come to formal night in street clothes. Even the room attendants were very nice and addressed us by name on day 1. I was thoroughly blown away.
The staff on RC was nice but they did not leave any special impression on us. They did not offer to pack us anything to go that was left over. They said no when we asked for a cup of Mac & cheese for one of our kids as a side because it was not on the main menu that evening (it was on the children’s menu but then she would’ve had to ordered her entree off the children’s menu). Not sure if this is typical service or just a single bad incident.

That's me. My favorite ship so far has been the Fantasy class. It was our first cruise and I remember being amazed at how massive it seemed. Now that we've been on a few other ships, the Fantasy class is tiny. BUT, I love how open it is. Everywhere you go, you have an ocean view, and you can sit on the deck if you want and still get the ocean breeze and see the water. Most of the newer ships have higher rails and glass all over the place. Feels like I need a booster seat to see over the rails, and it blocks the breeze. The top deck aft on the Fantasy at night is amazing. After they shut down the water slide the lights are shut down, noone is back there, and it's so dark you can see the stars.

I'm envious. We were supposed to go on the new Mardi Gras in March 2020 but the pandemic washed that away to sea! We're waiting until 2022 to set sail again with the idea that Carnival will have worked all of the kinks out on the Mardi Gras by then. Being a brand new ship, there will be minor challenges that the crew will have to deal with for the inaugural sailing, but I have only sailed Carnival and I've never had a negative experience. They treat us with respect and it's always the FUN ship!

If you have not tried a Carnival ship, I think you should give it a try. I recommend the larger ships because there is more to do. I also believe things are just as good, but, cost less on a Carnival. Room service costs are a big example between the two cruise lines. I prefer Carnival. Room service is free until 10:00 pm, and even then, the cost of items is low and it depends on what you buy, whereas, Royal Caribbean has a flat cost for room service no matter what you order (and it's kind of pricey in my opinion).

The renovated ship was redesigned by making the main restaurant smaller to make room for more rooms. Thus the restaurant had fewer and poorly designed food stations. The entertainment was below average. And the fare was slightly cheaper than ncl n rc...do yourself a favor avoid carnival at all cost. Spend a bit more and have a more enjoyable vacation. Carnival mivht be better on the larver ships but they cost about the szme as ncl n rc...then why go on carnival if its only edge was price. Bar/Pub food? Main dining room you can get salads, soups, lean meats, etc. On lido deck there is the blue iguana, where you can get made to order tacos, burritos, etc and they have plenty of veggies you can have on them. There are many dining options on board. The bars/pubs you go to must have full meals there, if you consider the food on Cranival bar/pub food.

Carnival Inside Cabins tend to be bland but always clean and comfortable. I would have to weigh all of the above to decide who has the slight edge. I think as far as base activities go, both lines are pretty even. The biggest difference to me is the shows or productions. Carnival ships had comedy and bands, Royal had more Broadway or cirque during Soleil type of shows, while Carnival had more Deck and themed parties. I'm speaking from my experience on the bigger ships as of late, but I've been on about 9 Carnival and 5 RC's overall. So I enjoy big adult only groups for fun on Carnival, but enjoy RC for more relaxed family trips or trips with a very small group of people. Basically big groups, you can party and make your own fun on Carnival, and small groups you can rely more on Shows and ship activities with a few parties here and there on RC.

As a frequent cruiser the one thing I enjoy on Royal Caribbean is the Lido deck when ordering omelettes or Mongolian Wok. When you walk up to the omelette or Mongolian station someone is there to take your order then you are given a pager. You can go sit down or grab your beverage or whatever. When your order is ready your pager goes off, you pick up your food. This eliminates standing in line 2-3 ft apart for 10-15 minutes watching someone else’s food being made! I have witnessed certain lines with at least 20-30 ppl standing and waiting for service. This is what all cruise lines especially Carnival should adopt to eliminate ppl standing in line during the popular breakfast and lunch hours! Come on Carnival!

But if I were to go again since my children are adult now, I'd go with just my husband and try to book a cabin close to the pool. I would love to cruise again. I thought Carnival was good, but I have no other cruise to compare it to. We went to Grand Turk and had a blast there. I’m hoping for the best with RC.

@@tamarawhiteurst8727 we had a great time, thanks! We preferred the food/service on Carnival but I’m not sure if that was all because of the Covid precautions and short staffing issues. We absolutely loved the daybeds on CocoCay! We have decided to give RC another try so my husband and I are booked for Wonder of the Seas in December.

I think this is an excellent, fair comparison of my 2 top cruise lines. I agree that Carnival's included food options are better. And I think the food is better too on Carnival. That being said, Royal Caribbean has the better, nicer, more modern, amenity-filled ships - so if you're travelling with kids, pick one of RCL's new ships and you can't go wrong. The food is good too (though not as good as Carnival). For example, on my last RCL cruise, I ate in the main dining room on 4 of the 11 nights. That's all. On my last Carnival cruise, I ate in the main dining room on all 9 nights. RCL's Windjammer buffet is a great option for those who don't want to wait for service or dress up for dinner. It's casual, it's quick, and the quality in the buffet is only slightly below the quality in the dining room.
Overall, an excellent comparison, pros and cons. Well done!

Everyone saying Royal is for the sophisticated crowd. I chose that one because of the wave rider and rock wall built on board. I figured Carnival is where to go if you want to party like you just turned 21 and Royal is where you go if you want to play like you're a child.

Exactly. Actually the cruises for sophisticated people would be Celebrity Cruises and Cunard.

If by Sophisticated, you mean self-centered assholes, that's correct.
The passengers were rude and half the staff looked like they didn't want to be there.
Carnival treated me way better and to this day I'm still friends with some of the bartenders.

RCL is hardly a sophisticated cruise line . It doesn’t compare to a line like Celebrity - which is a luxury line and you pay for it but I love it . I have done 18 ( the most recent in July on the Mardi Gras )on Carnival and about 9 on RCL with 5 on Celebrity ( one in June this year ) and 4 on NCL with one planned next week . I had preferred Carnival and NCL because of the spas with the thermal suites and hydro pools - always get a spa cabin .

The crew on the Carnival care much more about the guests having fun. You will receive much more attention and have more fun with the Carnival crew than you do on the Caribbean ships.

In my adult life, I’ve been on Carnival a few times and Royal once- going on Royal again in a couple weeks! I love both lines but found the food in the main dining room and buffet on Royal to be a cut above over all (though Carnival had some amazing food). The main difference in the entertainment was that the offerings on Carnival was shorter- for example, the shows on Royal were over an hour, and on Carnival around 40 minutes. The upside of Royal was that the production shows themselves were more elaborate, but on Carnival you could see multiple kinds of shows in one night! The other main difference was that I LOVED the solarium on Royal so was able to spend more time at the pool. All that said, this Royal cruise will be my first since the pandemic, so I will see if anything has changed!

Sailed once with Carnival subbing for someone in a friends party. We as a group had loads of fun, but the ship itself, at least for me, left a lot to be desired, since I really like to have access to unique attractions. I've sailed at least twelve times with Royal between voyager, radiance and oasis class ships and by far it's the better cruise line, imo. I prefer the classy and grand ambiance of Royal even being in that age group of 20 - 30 myself.
