It's rather sad; you spend the entire game collecting these melodies, and your reward for getting them all is not only learning about the tragic backstory between what happened to Ninten's gread-grandparents and Giegue, but also Magicant disappearing from existence. :(
Magicant does not dissapear You see, if a soul reaches the Sea of Eden (Earth's Subcouncious) it does take the form of its mind Thats until they reach the core of Eden with the determination to focus and take the hopes of all earthlings Ninten were unable to do so as even if he had the PK "Love/Rockin', ect" to do so, his grandma in law had reclaimed magicant already, and as she faded Magicant just waited a new person The problem was that Ninten had not taken any of the sanctuaries and the songs he recolected were his grandmas song

I like how each of the chiptune notes sounds like multiple voices trying to sing the song together in harmony, which represents the ending how Ninten, Lloyd and Ana are singing the song to Giegue.
In my opinion, Mother 1’s Eight Melodies are so much better than Mother 2’s. They actually have a clear history, and in my opinion just sound way more calm and relaxing.
EarthBound’s Smiles & Tears is a lovely song, but I do think Mother 1’s Eight Melodies are elevated above it for me for their active story significance.

If I could retell the story, George and Maria were abducted but Giygas would have an abusive father named Gyiyg who only wanted to carry on the family legacy. This forces a still infant Giygas to grow up too soon. While the other aliens would have no problem torturing George and Maria, Giygas would only fear that they would kill him. Maria sang him a lullaby and he decides to trust her. When George “stole” PSI Giygas’s father and people demanded he take it back from the humans or not be part of the family. He controlled Giygas to force him to do his bidding setting forth the game. At the end you fight Giygas, but after that instead of just leaving the earth as it is, he actually decides to live a life where he would feel loved for once. Gyiyg then comes in and threatens to disown Giygas. Giygas tells him “You were no father of mine” then Gyiyg decides to kill Giygas because he could surely find a “better son”. The final boss is Gyiyg who Giygas has a hard time killing because Gyiyg uses taunts that traumatized Giygas in his early days and Gyiyg’s Minions hold Ninten off. If Giygas or Ninten’s party dies it’s a Game Over however if Giygas dies it says “All hope is lost.” Only Giygas can kill Gyiyg and to get Giygas to attack you need to sing the 8 Melodie’s enough times. It takes approximately 4 hits to defeat Gyiyg. After Gyiyg flees, Giygas looks at Ninten and tells him this: “Ninten, you saved the world and you saved my life. You may never see this but, I will repay you one day. I owe it to you and your family for being the family I wish I always had.” After this Giygas decides to find a home on earth and rethink his life. He and Ninten decide to bury Maria. The post credits show Giygas putting flowers at Maria’s grave before he breaks down crying. In Mother 2, Gyiyg is back and it will be renamed from “Gyiyg Strikes Back” to “The Return Of Gyiyg”. This time Buzz Buzz gives Ness the same Ocraina that Ninten once used. Mother 2 will have Giygas return but still be more reluctant to fight his father. When Ness and co sing the melodies, Giygas kills his father and with the spirits in the robots he uses the last of his energy to bring Ness back home. Ness and company see him and cry he tells Ness “I am not long for this world. You have to be strong, focus on the future. You are 100% capable of saving the world when it needs it. I have repayed my debt. Here I come mom. We will be together again.” He then dies. Before they part ways, Giygas is given a funeral. Frank Fly, Everdred, Monotoli, Runaway Five, Venus and many others join to give him the send off. Ness can go to his grave and it will say “Here Lies Giygas: A Kind Loving Warrior.” Ness can put on a Necklace that says “Mom’s Necklace” which Maria wore that Giygas always cherished. Mother 3 would mostly remain the same. But in the end Hinawa is shown looking over Lucas and co after the apocalypse. Instead of it saying End in the final scene it will say “Thanks for playing.” The player can also see what appears to be a transparent silhouette of Giygas suggesting he was also watching over Lucas and co.

Both are great. Mother 1's are just more iconic. Earthbound's 8 Melodies are pretty moving tho, with the nostalgic cutscene playing

Tbh, I thought this was mediocre compared to Mother 2's eight melodies at first, but after a little while, it grew on me!
