How to replace a standard radiator valve to a Thermostatic radiator valve without draining the system. Tools as seen on Dragons den (www.bbc.co.uk/dragonsden/entrepreneurs/grahamdowney.shtml).
A set of tools with everything you will need to remove and replace or fit a new domestic central heating radiator in a handy carry case. The kit will help you remove a radiator without draining. Whether for decoration purposes such that you want to paint behind a radiator, or put a new wall paper, or while cleaning, or if you are replacing the radiator itself, this tool allows you to remove the radiator without draining, and without making a mess.

Plumbers love these videos because they are relaxing at home with the kids of a weekend and the next thing is some Pratt is ringing panicking that water is pouring out of the radiator in 40 years I have never known a pipe freeze to last that amount of time

Thanks for the vid though it is still pretty advanced and technical for entry level homeowners like me! All my top floor radiators are cold at the top and roasting at the bottom but no air comes out when I try to bleed them. Hope your tips will work as my plumber is always hard to get hold of!

Try this, as it worked for mine.
First isolate all the rads on the top floor, apart from one.
Switch on the system and allow the water to flow, via the pump.
By having all the other rads off, this forces the water to move through that rad and clear any air locks that can't potentially be done by just opening the bleeder on its own.
Bleed the rad in the normal way.
Once bless, close off the one you have just been working on and repeat on the next one.

That is long. Drain the system. Have a cuppa. Then fit the valve. Job done. Dont forget to add inhibitor. 👍
On a gravity system, just isolate the header tank from the circuit and plug the vent pipe if you have one. I think he should have quoted the pint glass and beer mat trick?
Is that a copper pipe or plastic. Can the freezer kit burst the pipe.

That would be useful for one or 2 radiators cant use freezing for more rads otherwise it will be too expensive. The clamp thing will only work if the tail is the same size whit is not always the case. I normally would release pressure from drainer then quickly change the valve.
Occasionally, the nut and olive that are on the original pipe won't fit and tighten onto the new thermostatic valve. They usually do but I have come across some that don't.. This can cause a problem with the pipe frozen because you then don't have much time to act and get the old nut and olive off. I usually have a 15mm compression stop-end lying on the ground beside me just in case the ice in the pipe melts. There is a special tool to remove the old olive, but any paint on the pipe below the nut needs to be removed first to slip the nut down the pipe a bit t to get the tool on the olive to remove it. So before I begin the freezing, I usually remove any paint just below the nut, and put the stop-end and olive-removing tool within reach on the ground near me.

Excellent video. Very clear. Thanks. I might get a plumber in now though as my DIY skills may not be up to the job and I'll save myself time and cost of the kit (but not the cost of the plumber of course!)
You'll save yourself the cost of a new carpet, maybe a new ceiling if it's a bedroom rad, maybe excess on your insurance if you claim, plus a shedload of arguments with the lady of the house (assuming there is one). As long as you get a normal plumber in, not a 24 hour emergency one, it makes far more sense. Get a recommendation from your local plumbers' merchant or try one of the find a builder type websites.
What is the name of the freezing kit matey?
Buy a plastic cat litter tray which is shallow and wide enough to slip under any radiator and this will catch any drips. Most of the homes I work in have cream carpets and black radiator water is not a good idea.
OK as long as you don’t need to change the radiator valve tail or the nut and olive on the pipe.

Gas Safe means working with gas+boilers not plumbing,with these fast track courses they can do the course in 6 weeks,most plumbers would have been Corgi Reg and now Gas Safe but would have many years plumbing experience, you might have got one off the former.
Im sorry you had a bad experience but there are many good tradesmen out there, recommendation goes a long way to getting one, just because the advert says I am does not mean I can,
Loved your vid and method BUT having left the pipework with the rad stat attached but closed off, should there be a temperature drop, say over night in autumn, the rad stat might just open and cause a flood. How do I know this. Guess. So ALWAYS cap off the rad stat connection.
Each TRV tap set comes with a full shut off cap that fits in place of the TRV which enables full shut off of the valve body, only problem with this is that the majority of plumbers do not appear to leave these valuable pieces of kit with the householder or even if they do by the time service is required the original owner has moved on along with the caps.
I drained my rad without dripping any water, I used my wet and dry and sucked it out. But a valve change this a good method

@7:16, why would opening the valve at the other end 'let water back into the radiator'? Unless of course, this radiator is actually empty...it does sound hollow. I'd like to have seen the bleed valve being opened, before and after the refit...just to prove that the rad is full, and that this video does what it says on the tin.

seams to me the plumbers you have seen were not really plumbers or they did not know how to use the freezer kits, I have been freezing pipes for over 25yrs never had a fail if you follow the guide lines for freezing you cant go wrong and it can save hours of work
Ha, ha. I can imagine hundreds of DIY's trying something like this, then at the last knockings, while under pressure, cross threading the valve nut.
Too true. I've done thousands of plumbing jobs, but the one time I tried this sort of short cut, replacing a circulator pump, one of the gate valves wouldn't shut off so I got water everywhere. Lesson - fit quality Pegler gate valves and drain the system. Then if something goes wrong it's not a disaster.

Not changing the old olive and nut is lazy. Not all valves will fit within the same depth to the olive, nor may the old nut be the same chrome effect. Too many pieces in that kit to lose/break, in addition to all the pieces of the freezing kit. I would not trust the ice not to pop, safer just to drain down. I’d rather spend more time on it, than pay to clean a customers carpet if it went wrong.

Me too. Iv'e had such a good vacuum created on some systems that when the valve is removed you can see the water in the pipe. Only water loss is from the rad but that's only a minor dribble.
