Hi! I have the fathom 2-speed. In high gear it slips every 12th turn on the handle. This is about 1/4 to 1/2 turn on the handle without any resistance, then it grabs and functions normally for another 12 turns. It does not happen if I adjust to less drag (not usable amount of drag). Any suggestions on what might be wrong?
Interesting, you may need to crack open the side plate and take a look at the gears to see if there;s any broken, deformed teeth or if the dragwasher on the spool is fixed securely...not entirely sure.
Hey mate I’ve got a fathom 25 and it was working fine. Haven’t used it for ages took it out the other day and the free spool is engaging but then when clicked back into normal it grinds and takes about 5 spins to catch. Any ideas?
Hmmn, fathom 25 star or lever drag? If it's the star drag, sometimes you need to cock the spool back a bit. It may not engage well under tension since the pinion has to 'catch' the spool to mate.
@@shit2fly it seems that once the eccentric jack is disengaged and pulled out to put it back into gear, the pinion yoke doesn’t fall down so it kind of grinds for 5 winds until it catches?
@@kydula3141 Yep, I think it's kinda common with the fathoms actually. But I don't think it's really a serious issue per say. Even my old Speedmasters do the same sorta thing. But you can take a look at the pinion to see if anything is deformed or rounded off.
Has it been like that out of the box or after some time? Sounds like something is worn, when engaging the shift button try rocking the handle back and forth to see if it will drop in.
Yes, it can. There;s just a retaining clip holding it. Remember there's grease on the back of it so sometimes it may feel like it's stuck but just use a little flat edged tool to raise it off the spool once the retaining clip is removed.
@@napok10 Penn's drag material in the fathom ld is duradrag, it's the same material in the internationals. It can be run dry and i believe penn actually recommends to run it dry, however going on the information from gurus like alantani, you can apply some cal's grease on it and wipe it off completely so just a skin remains on the surface of the drag. But it's fine to not grease it. Dura drag essentially is already greased. www.bdoutdoors.com/forums/threads/penn-dura-drag.570653/
Only a little, there is no antireverse bearing only the 2 eared dogs, so there will be a tiny amount of play but not much to be very noticeable. If it is significant, you might have to check to make sure if both dogs are engaging properly.
Make sure the preset button isn't overtightened, also check that the cam is properly seated. Otherwise there might be some binding or damage to the pinion bearing or another defect.
Hey Rock, it's just going backwards. Start by removing the preset knob and the lever, the cam and then the screws on the right sideplate. You can look up John Tuttle's tutorial over at alantani, he does a breakdown of the fathom as well the torque. They're both essentially the same.
Hello, I wish you showed the tear apart section before you put everything back together
Hello sir, does it really have side plays?
Hello, after I cleaned and greased my reel, I feel a grinding noise on the left side of the reel. Do you think its its much or too little grease?
Double check to make sure everything is aligned and seated well (all screws and clips in correctly). Shouldn't be happening.
Hi I can’t find the drag washer anywhere can you give me some help finding it?
It's on the spool, right side.
@@shit2fly I’m taking about a new one, a 160 lber smoked my drag washer

@@shit2fly yeh I’ve taken it all apart in perfect condition just doesn’t push back down properly
What's up Bud for some reason my reel is backwards. When you put it on full strike it is On free spool Any idea thanks..
hmmn, you'll have to check the cam and make sure it's on correctly and not reversed. Otherwise it might be a factory error with the cam machining.
Good night can you plz advise me how to remove that push down button or on a penn 50VSW, Thanks ,
Hey man, same process as this one. The only change is in the most recent visx. All the previous models use the same shift system.
Which fathom is this? 40NLD2?
Yep.
Hey mine won’t engage 2 speed only when I loosen the nut that holds the handle it engages low gear but than the handle is very loose

Hello, is this reel anodized?
No, it's cast aluminium and there;s a protective coating over it. The flagship version of the fathom however is: The Penn Torque Lever Drag
What if it doesn’t spin freely?
Make sure the preset button isn't overtightened, also check that the cam is properly seated. Otherwise there might be some binding or damage to the pinion bearing or another defect.
