There’s something so satisfying about old technology. Especially making it yourself from scratch. That silent, instantaneous change that you get from a modern electronic display just doesn’t do it.

The Solari display at Amtrak 30th Street Station Philadelphia was one of my favorite parts about travelling. Sadly, it was finally retired in 2018, after over 40 years of service. It is currently at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, in Strasburg, PA.
The big train station in the middle of the Netherlands used to have a huuuuuge flap display for the trains. I can still hear the sound every time a train would leave, and the board would flip all the flaps all at once :D
i love "old" tech, i am a IT Consultant, works with Database system and systems using DB´s. always reading up on new tech. But i have started to literally dislike new tech and LOVE this "old" tech, and in general there is so much cool analog tech!
I just made a micro controller clock where each picture (PNG) is a bit slow from the SD card. Glad to see some of those things that came to mind in my thought process.
good job! now try making more split flaps for all letters and characters for all messages. edit: i know he only needs some, but i wish it could display any message.
The large array shown in the video is located at Frankfurt/Main airport (Germany). The design uses synchronous motors at 50 Hz and a fixed gear ratio. There were quite a number of attempts needed for the final design. But the displays are a bit older than 20 years and still in operation. Actually Fraport don't want to replace them, as these kind of displays are nowadays somewhat unique. The displays features a function, which is not possible with TFTs - if a row is malfunctioning, the latter rows are simply shifted :)
I’m pretty certain they don’t use stepper motors, but DC motors and a marker to indicate position, and that’s why they all rotate when they are first turned on.
these old mechanical displays always fascinated me as a kid, the clockwork involved was mesmerizing. todays digital world is neat, yet somehow soul-less. glad to see things like nixies and split flops being rediscovered by gen Z
Just an idea to make at least less modifications and using the same barrel and motor. You double the number of flips, so you would split the rotation angle in half. With one complete revolution of the barrel you would have A-Z, followed by 0-9, followed by A-Z and 0-9 again. Hope you can understand my thoughts. Would like to hear your opinion about my idea 😊
@@keithjohn1650he isnt selling the product itself but he is selling the project file of how its 3d printed on his website. Idk if that would be legal or not.
I kinda prefer this in the airport, cuz if there is any change about flight, you will catch it right away. Not like the LED screen, you have to stare at the line of your flight.
This scratched an itch in my brain I didnt even know I had...

I think it was Honolulu. The airport board straight up sounded like an airsoft machine gun. It was decades ago. It was memorizing.

Agreed!
The genius in commercial flip digit signs that make them financially viable is that they use only 1 motor
Do they have a gearbox or sum? Maybe an complex algorithm?
@@Reazy-yeah, clutches and either mechanical computing or (way more common these days) a modern processor.
Damn was just wondering how they did that in those big displays, but that takes some mechanical engineering..
@@jan_the_man One motor drives all wheels on all digit positions, an electromechanical coil per digit engages or disengages a single wheel.

Next step is a pixel graphics. Letters become subpixel layouts for higher resolution.

This is really cool

This is great. Very well built
I love split flap displays! I didn't know they had a name!
How to make your home sound like you're inside a busy airport.
Those are awesome. I love these flop displays
i love analog displays
You mean, "no video displays".
Haha yeah, video free! Still lots of digital under the hood
MECHANICAL. not analog

hell yeah, love analog
but this is digital

Good job man. Very cool. I didn't think it would work consistently with that stretchy belt. But i guess it wasn't too stretchy after all.
These displays are so nice. It's a shame we don't see them more often. But I understand why. Motors and moving parts means wear and tear

Airport flap boards are so nostalgic and satisfying. Modern versions are also as satisfying where random changing symbols transform into letters.
What a beautiful use of multi filament printing
I need one.
You could definitely do the same thing with the little motor. Just belt drive with a larger diameter gear on the spindle

Surely those signs used gears instead of belts.
