Axes are better in cases like this, especially since shields are a thing, and a good axe (stone) is cheaper than a good sword (I personally don't think a sword less than iron/diamond is really worth it)

dev made a mistake not crafting the leggings in the nether, he could have left a permanent fire/lag trail behind him
