I can verify that the liquid drain holes do work, having fallen asleep holding a cup of coffee and spilling in into the keyboard of an X220! It was a little sticky so I had to remove the keyboard and flush it, but everything still works.
Luckily I have never had to unintentionally test the spill-proof function of any of my ThinkPads, however I have cleaned many ThinkPad keyboards before and would often rinse them thoroughly with water. So far the process hasn't killed any keyboards.
Keyboard on my x220 died after being spilled by a tea... so I could not turn it on... had to replace the keyboard by some china model and it works again.
Yup - my housemate years ago spilled the entirety of a can of Dr. Pepper onto my X220's keyboard. Removed and flushed with slightly warm water and dried it for two days and it was like nothing had happened.... But I still held it over him for years.
i have a T420S with a few modifications > unlocked bios (so i could install a 4G WWAN card in place of the GOBI 3000 3G module) > modified ultrabay battery that utilizes both the battery connector AND the SATA connector (2 HDDs go into the battery enclosure with a gutted SATA splitter, and about 300wh of LiPo cells line the bottom of the laptop in a 3D printed enclosure that clamps into the ultrabay and expresscard port without blocking them, those cells plug into the ultrabay module with a 3S JST connector since lenovo designed it to drain the ultrabay first for some reason, and with this mod i get around 5hrs of battery life with the CPU and GPU both at full load) > backlit keyboard (i drilled out the lettering and filled it in with acrylic, then laid LED strips under the keys and wired them into the thinklight circuit, i even made the nipple glow) > brighter thinklight (swapped the thinklight LED with a brighter one, i also added a switch so i can choose between the keyboard light and thinklight, unfortunately theres not enough power to run both at the same time though) > backlit IO (i added blue LED strips to all the USB ports so they have a faint glow when im trying to plug something in in the dark) > backlit speakers (i also added an LED strip just under the speaker grill and connected it internally to one of the USB ports) > liquid metal (replaced the thermal paste with liquid metal) i feel like i have the ultimate thinkpad, it definitely turns heads (and even got me kicked out of a class when i was in university because it was a distraction)

This is an interesting video. I've owned second hand ThinkPads for about 15 of the last 20 years and have always loved them. I also find buying a 2 year old high end ThinkPad can give more performance than some of the new mid range laptops at a fraction of the price. My favorite so far has to be the X220 (maybe excluding the 701CS I had in the late 90s) which I haven't needed for a few years now but still keep it as a backup, currently I have the Lenovo designed ThinkPad S1 Yoga which, although it's a nice laptop it's not the best thing to bear the ThinkPad emblem. If you're a hardcore gamer then a ThinkPad isn't for you, if you need a workhorse for productivity then look no further.
Really great, mature viewpoint on saving money but getting a Superior Product. I am typing this on a Transitional IBM/Lenovo T61P - when I ordered it they were not sure which logo would be installed - (and still running fine on XP!) and it was purchased in 2008! Great performance, still functional for what I need. Recently bought a nice W500 for a "spare" - uses the same Thinkpad docking station, power cord, removable drives, etc. But Windows 7. Thanks for a great Theme!
Hey can you please guide me I wanna buy Thinkpad E14 with 8 GB RAM 256 SSD, DOS. I wanna use it for powerpoint presentation and browsing. Its available at 36 K Indian rupees. Am I making the best choice??
@@shashanknayak87 That's a very good PC. Just for powerpoint and browsing you could go with an older laptop, but you want to have 8 gb ram. That's very important.
Great video! I've always bought ThinkPads (T-4xx series) because of how well they run Linux, and because of how rugged and durable they are, and because I can carry around hot-swappable batteries with me when I fly to conferences, and because the battery life is excellent, and because the keyboard feels so good, and because it's so easy to rip the back off and replace the HDD and upgrade the RAM, and because they run quiet (well, the ones I currently have run very quietly - I have a T450s, T460, T460s, T470, T470p, and now a T480 too). Even my T450s stacks up pretty well to modern day laptops/ultrabooks - and considering I bought it for about a sixth of the price of a new ultrabook (i.e. under $200), I find it truly astonishing. My T480 cost more, but it was still about half the price of a brand new unit. I'm seriously thinking about purchasing a secondhand T430, just to add to my collection.
The T430 is one of my favorites because it is still fairly modern, yet has all the upgradability one could ask for. It’s also one of the last models with the “classic” ThinkPad design, and has a plethora of mods that can be done to make it even more versatile.
Over the past few years I have purchased three starting with the T61 then the T400 and most resent the T430 I fine all three still preforms amazingly well considering they are refurbished products. I have updated rams in the T400 and also in the T430 . I been a believer in the ThinkPad since the purchase of the T61.
I got my t400 as a random laptop to repair. It turned out bios was bricked so i flashed it. Man i love this laptop the trackpoint, the keyboard light, upgradeability, this laptop is so fun to work on ! I am thinking about libre booting it, but thats a bit harder than just flashing regular bios plus you have to get a new wifi card to do it if you want access to the internet
Great video mate, enjoyed it thoroughly as well as the more recent one. Looking forwards to your future videos and your presentation and information is top notch. Really, keep it up!
Nice video, I own old ThinkPad SL410 from 2010, added some RAM and SSD and purrs like a kitten. It very durable too. ABOUT THE BATTERIES. I was told in official Lenovo store, that is not recommanded to buy official Lenovo batteries despite the fact that they are available, because they are not produced anymore (for older models), only stored in stocks, so their capacity is already about 2/3 of the full capacity. Its better to buy spare batteries from China resellers, because they are newer and cheaper.
I haven’t heard that about Lenovo batteries though, I usually buy aftermarket replacements anyway. I sometimes worry about it being a fire hazard, but have yet to have any issues.
A year ago I bought refurbished ThinkPad X240 for about $200 with i5-4210U, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, I made RAM upgrade to 8GB and change HDD to 240GB WD Green SSD, also I installed Windows 10 Pro with OEMAct Windows 7 Pro key, and this laptop is absolutely perfect, handy and usable for all basic stuffs in 2019 for its price if I compare with new-ones with same price. It also has 4G modem, Bluetooth, WiFi 5GHz and Gigabit ethernet, there's absolutely no chance to get these features in $300 new laptop.
watching this on a X200s ^.^ Well explained introduction. I think design & functionality wise Lenovo really peaked between 2006 and 2012. Too bad they turned Thinkpad series too much into "leonvo macbooks" afterwards. Taking away too many things they deemed "nobody needs that anymore" even thou the IBM formula was perfect.
Thinkpad laptops used to be the best, their concept was awesome. You can repair it all by yourself without any hassle, I don't know why no one creates machines like these?
Greetings from a T430 :) My device almost maxed out for the top: 1600x900 display, camera. 16GB ram, i7-3720QM cpu, sata SSD, mSata SSD, HDD in a caddy. And also having 4337 and 4338 docking stations. I'm usually using it with three (2x dp + 1 vga) external FHD monitor with Ubuntu. But sometimes also use it with an LG 4K display @ 30Hz. And I thought sometimes I would like to game a bit, so I have an EXP GCD external express-card to pci-express adapter with a Geforce GTX1050 card in it. Also I have a secondary basic T430 as backup machine in case of hw failure. Previously I used 14" T61 machines, also with extras, like t8300 cpu, 8GB ram, broadcom crystal hd video decoder card, ssd, hdd in caddy... and of course with docking stations. Also having expresscards for usb3, esata. I have 2505, 2504 and also a 2503 dock. The last one extended with a geforce gt610 card :-)
I'm an old man now, but i LOVED trackpoint at the first look with my fisrt Thinkpad in 2006, no touchpad (desactivated in BIOS), just Trackpoint and buttons ! Four Thinkpads at home, a R60, still working (purchased in 2006), a X60, still working, a X220 still working and a P51 for my daughter of course still working (i hope...) ! Extra point with Thinkpads : no problem with linux ! Thinkpads are simply the best.

I had a IBM Thninkpad T40, bought it on 2010 and it's still function so good until now... The only things that i have changed is 8GB Ram and 512GB SSD on 2018. Such a great built laptop
Just found this channel, and good stuff so far. I'm watching on my Lenovo Thinkpad X131e(AMD e-1200 APU) with 8GB DDR3L RAM & Xubuntu 18.04 on it, but even though I've been a power user since the 80's this series should still help me narrow down a solid upgrade for a decent price.
subcribed. 19yo who knows about the true thinkpad, good stuffs :) ower of T410 T520 X220 and several other older models from IBM i forgot (some home user range R series).
Hello. I'm looking to buy the E580 for programming and very casual gaming(CS, FIFA & AoE). Would you recommend? Its the only think pad in my budget. Other choice is Dell 7370. Thank you.
Both are good options, but I highly recommend looking in the used/refurbished market. You’ll get a lot more performance for less money, you can probably find a decently spec’d T450 or T460 for the price.
Very durable indeed. Used one for several years and it only found its end when I was riding my bike, drunk, with it in a plastic bag attached to the handlebar and in a curve it got shredded by the spokes. Yes, I'm not a smart person.
Water never does damage if the laptop is shutdown, and kept off till dry. It's often sugar, especially in coffee that does damage, or turning it on before it dries. For non-laptop keyboards, a rinse then dry cycle in a dishwasher will fix it! "Damage from liquid" is a totally misunderstood problem.
I like the T450s. It makes some compromises when it comes to power and upgrades, but it's built very well, is nice and thin, has great battery life, and a pretty good keyboard.
ThinkPads are actually really good machines. I used a T40, T60, X200, T400, T430 and since yesterday a T440p. ThinkPads have very good out of box Linux experience and they are great for Pentesting. One thing that I don't like, is the T440p track pad but I can install a T450 track pad into the T440p. I also have three 500gb SSDs inside of my T440p which is really amazing and makes the switch from T400 way easier. My next ThinkPad will be probably the X1 Carbon Extreme but I gonna see, if my T440p gonna hold up for more than 4 years.
Thanks for the vids! What do you think is a reasonable price these days for the T430 and X230 with base specs? The prices I've seen tend to fluctuate quite a bit. Any known Win10 or Linux issues to be aware of? My laptop died recently, so looking to pick something up that will last a while for basic tasks with a few upgrades
With stock configuration (i5, 320 GB hard drive, 4 GB RAM) expect to pay around $150. Configurations with faster processors, more RAM, more storage and/or an SSD will usually cost more. Cheaper ones usually will come with a used or non-functional battery. I haven’t used Linux much with these machines but I have yet to find any major issues with Windows 10. My only issue had been the fingerprint reader on my X230 sometimes not liking a new update. This is usually fixed within a day or two or with a few restarts.
The HP looks like a decent machine, but if you value a good keyboard and/or use the TrackPoint then the X1 will be a much better investment. If you want better upgradeability and in my opinion better build quality I recommend the T series, but the X1 is still a well-built machine.
own t440s, went motorbiking cross country in vietnam and I went sightseeing and fell into a flood street that came up to my knee. my laptop bag fell and got submerged in water. I thought the laptop was toast. I blow dry the laptop over night in low setting and to my surprise it powered up. the lcd has water damage but glad the motherboard didn't die.
LOL. Well kid, I'm definitely an "old timer" as I have 40 years on you, but I don't use that red nib on my Thinkpad w541. ;-) Seriously though, I am coming to you to learn about this laptop since it's my first Thinkpad, and it came with a docking station as well, so maybe you can teach this "old dog" a few new tricks on it? Good presentation so far btw.
The W541 is a very good laptop. The dock is useful if you have a lot of accessories set up at your desk (an external monitor, keyboard/mouse, external storage, Ethernet, etc), then you can just plop the laptop down on the dock instead of having to plug everything in separately. The W541 also has a lot of upgrades that can be done to improve performance (RAM, storage, processor, display, external graphics card). I hope you enjoy it!
@@samanthatang9759 I've been wearing glasses since far before I knew what a ThinkPad was. @@coolpupstudios6719 W540 has a larger screen (and I've heard the 3K IPS panel available for these models looks fantastic) and an ExpressCard slot for easy expansion, as well as a Thunderbolt port. Yup - my housemate years ago spilled the entirety of a can of Dr. Pepper onto my X220's keyboard. Removed and flushed with slightly warm water and dried it for two days and it was like nothing had happened.... But I still held it over him for years.
i have a T420S with a few modifications
> unlocked bios (so i could install a 4G WWAN card in place of the GOBI 3000 3G module)
> modified ultrabay battery that utilizes both the battery connector AND the SATA connector (2 HDDs go into the battery enclosure with a gutted SATA splitter, and about 300wh of LiPo cells line the bottom of the laptop in a 3D printed enclosure that clamps into the ultrabay and expresscard port without blocking them, those cells plug into the ultrabay module with a 3S JST connector since lenovo designed it to drain the ultrabay first for some reason, and with this mod i get around 5hrs of battery life with the CPU and GPU both at full load)
> backlit keyboard (i drilled out the lettering and filled it in with acrylic, then laid LED strips under the keys and wired them into the thinklight circuit, i even made the nipple glow)
> brighter thinklight (swapped the thinklight LED with a brighter one, i also added a switch so i can choose between the keyboard light and thinklight, unfortunately theres not enough power to run both at the same time though)
> backlit IO (i added blue LED strips to all the USB ports so they have a faint glow when im trying to plug something in in the dark)
> backlit speakers (i also added an LED strip just under the speaker grill and connected it internally to one of the USB ports)
> liquid metal (replaced the thermal paste with liquid metal)
i feel like i have the ultimate thinkpad, it definitely turns heads (and even got me kicked out of a class when i was in university because it was a distraction)
Can you send pictures?
@@joko49perez I'm planning on taking it to a local PCMR event later this year and seeing how many heads get turned
I'd rather not risk spoiling the surprise by leaking pictures of it early

Best channel on YT! Bought my first thinkpad recently (T510 should arrive tomorrow). Your reviews have sold me on the thinkpad.
Whenever I glance at a ThinkPad, I feel so fuzzy inside and immediately want to partition the drive...let the fun begin.
The new X1 Extreme seems to be a good option for gamers, as it has a GTX 1050 Ti and the 8th gen i5 and i7’s.
I must be out of the loop a bit as I'd missed that one. Sounds like it'd make a half decent mid end gaming laptop with the usual ThinkPad bonuses :D
I have a T410. Upgraded the ram to 8gb and swapped the HDD for an SSD. It runs Windows 10 like a charm and is perfect for everyday work.
I am typing this on a second hand E545 and I also have an old IBM R51 and I am very happy with both.
I feel the same and I have a few older IBM and Lenovo laptops... they are workhorses and rugged... Thanks for doing these video!
awesome video! so interesting and i love your passion for thinkpads! i already have a t420 and i love it, and just wanted to learn a bit more :D
Watching on a x220 i7 16gb of ram and its still runs lightning fast!
Love your analogy on "stick shift" and track point. 💪🏽
watching this on a X200s ^.^ Well explained introduction. I think design & functionality wise Lenovo really peaked between 2006 and 2012. Too bad they turned Thinkpad series too much into "leonvo macbooks" afterwards. Taking away too many things they deemed "nobody needs that anymore" even thou the IBM formula was perfect.
I love my T60 and it was made while IBM was still in charge. Excellent video Sir.
I have a T60 myself (with a T61 motherboard) and a few that I recently acquired are seeing new life for students doing remote learning this fall!
Just purchased a T580 and souped it up a bit with the Black Friday special. Hoping I don’t regret it!
Thinkpad is the King of laptops!

Built my t530 from scrap parts for 15$. Best laptop I’ve had in a long time.
Just got ahold of one myself, it's a fairly nice system!
I was going to buy a macbook from(2010-2014) but remembered about these machines. Now I'm in the market for one!

Awesome intro video! Going to be checking out the rest of the series!
Greetings from a T430 :)
My device almost maxed out for the top: 1600x900 display, camera.
My T430 is still mostly stock, however it does have upgraded RAM and display. Eventually I'll be upgrading the processor in it.

That aside, my reviews searches lead to me seeing this video and decided to subscribe :).
I have a Dell Latitude E6400 ATG 2010 that my college gave to me a few years ago. I have upgraded literally everything on this computer (wifi/bluetooth card, ram, CPU, SSD) for about $300. Still is a solid computer that I have used for nearly 4 years now
Most of the Latitudes are fairly solid machines, but hey, they got their design cues from the best! ;)
I had a IBM Thninkpad T40, bought it on 2010 and it's still function so good until now... The only things that i have changed is 8GB Ram and 512GB SSD on 2018. Such a great built laptop
Your absolutely right, Thinkpads are the best, i'll be keeping my x230 for quite some time. Keep up those videos ! Subbed. :)
My daily driver is an X230 myself, with an IPS display and the classic keyboard mod. A nice powerful machine in a small size!
There is a 1080p IPS mod for the X220/X230, but I think it requires soldering.
I have several Thinkpads including the T420 & T430. If you get them with the nvidia NVS graphics, they perform pretty well as a low-level gaming rig.
I actually swapped the board in my T430 for one with the GPU, and the GPU cooler. Performance is definitely a step up.
yep got a T420 with the nvidia graphics.. its a beast of machine for its time (and upgraded as far as i can) ... still my laptop daily driver :)
T40 was a beast. Dropped it many times and lifted it using the display panel corners. Not a scratch!
I recently purchased an X 250 which was upgraded. Had not owned one in years. Forgot how great the keyboard is.
T410 and T420 laptops have worked great for me for years
subcribed. 19yo who knows about the true thinkpad, good stuffs :) ower of T410 T520 X220 and several other older models from IBM i forgot (some home user range R series).
My daily drivers are an X230 (classic keyboard mod) and a T430 (also with the classic keyboard mod).
My daily heavy duty is a T500 dual battery and X9100 on SSD ! Rock all time !
@@SebisRandomTech Thank you.
I've never been able understand why people settle for touchpads. Trackpoints offer speed and precision not matched.
I’ve got a T61 from 2007/2008. Machine is perfect. The windows is crappy. I loaded Linux in it and it runs great. Very happy even after 12 years.

Very durable indeed. Used one for several years and it only found its end when I was riding my bike, drunk, with it in a plastic bag attached to the handlebar and in a curve it got shredded by the spokes. Yes, I'm not a smart person.
The Thinkpad series is amazing. Truly an amazing business laptop!
I just fell in love with this series (t)
Water never does damage if the laptop is shutdown, and kept off till dry. It's often sugar, especially in coffee that does damage, or turning it on before it dries. For non-laptop keyboards, a rinse then dry cycle in a dishwasher will fix it! "Damage from liquid" is a totally misunderstood problem.
Thinkpad users love their Thinkpads. I think my next laptop will be a Thinkpad.
same, thinking about getting a W520 soon as I see some good prices on them.

Thanks for watching! I hope you got to check out the other videos in this series! I'm rocking an X230 as my daily driver right now!
Can you tell me your review on 440
Thanks for the vids!
Nice Video Dude, Watching this on my P50. More Thinkpad Video.
Working on a few new videos that’ll be uploaded soon!
ThinkPad for Life!!! I've got three...
I'm looking forward the education you're giving in the ThinkPads!
Great video man. Can't decide if to get a refurbished X1 carbon or HP 840 G3
LOL. Well kid, I'm definitely an "old timer" as I have 40 years on you, but I don't use that red nib on my Thinkpad w541. ;-)
Seriously though, I am coming to you to learn about this laptop since it's my first Thinkpad, and it came with a docking station as well, so maybe you can teach this "old dog" a few new tricks on it? Good presentation so far btw.
The W541 is a very good laptop. The dock is useful if you have a lot of accessories set up at your desk (an external monitor, keyboard/mouse, external storage, Ethernet, etc), then you can just plop the laptop down on the dock instead of having to plug everything in separately. The W541 also has a lot of upgrades that can be done to improve performance (RAM, storage, processor, display, external graphics card). I hope you enjoy it!
@@samanthatang9759 I've been wearing glasses since far before I knew what a ThinkPad was. I have a T470s. Another good thing about Thinkpads is that you can install and use Linux on them just fine!
Thinkpad without linux it's like macbook without macos.
I like this young guy way of tech review, so I just subscribe to his channel.
Something about 60 Hz camera settings, but nice to see thinkpad classics still work
I got a T420s core i5, 8GB RAM for $100 and change in eBay. I threw an SSD in it and it is great!
Update the bios and you can throw 16bg ram and a quad core i7 in that t420....whoop whoop.
My T420s is still kicking after almost 7 years. I haven't even put an SSD in it yet. Thinkpads worth even single penny.
Im using a w520 with i7 vpro, 12gb ram, nvidia quadro unfortunately, but aside from graphically intensive games this thing can handle anything thrown at it. Im gonna buy a graphics card to pcie and then it truly will be able to handle anything.
My thinkpad E440 sparked once. It didn't work for a day. After that, it's like nothing happened. Everything's still working fine up until now, I'm currently using it to write this comment.

I wouldn't buy thinkpads if they didn't have trackpoints. Watching on my t61
We believe Thinkpads are the best laptops particularly T-410, T-420, T-430 and later models. Classic design perhaps changed after T-430, 440 in particular the classic Thinkpad keyboard.
You can definitely make a video about how to use /practise using the trackpoint! XD

@@coolpupstudios6719 W540 has a larger screen (and I've heard the 3K IPS panel available for these models looks fantastic) and an ExpressCard slot for easy expansion, as well as a Thunderbolt port. In addition, the processors and graphics are a bit beefier than what is present in the T440p. The only major downside is the off-center keyboard/touchpad/TrackPoint because of the dedicated numeric keypad.
You should do a cover-up about other models of rugged laptop like precision and latitude by dell
