What a fabulous little video. I’m stuck at 1600, rarely blunder but miss the big opportunities - this has really helped open my eyes.

There’s always been an aspect to chess I’ve loved since a child but I’ve never been able to find the words to explain it simply. Speed and beauty. Hit the nail on the head. I always put it as something like there’s positions you find your self in, and you can find a series of moves where the opponent couldn’t help but do as you wanted them to, and they just have to walk right into your trap and there’s nothing they can do to stop it, even if they see it. It’s just bam bam bam, mate. Speed and beauty is a more elegant and succinct way to put it 😂

I enjoy seeing you and Levy together… Sorry, I’m drawing a blank on the name of that, I think was wired, but it was fun watching you give him a lesson, lol! I met you once when I was playing chess in tournaments and that was probably 20 years ago. I think it was in Philadelphia and I’m drawing a blank on the name of the tournament but it was held there every year and probably still is. I’m just getting back into Chess so, it’s been a long time. Thank you again for these wonderful lessons I look forward to more. Sorry about this mess. I am dictating it after. First example might be also solved by reversing the move order, an important tool when calculating combinations.

I just started playing OTB, and figured out I just fail to figure out the next two to three moves which I used to on mobile...😢

11:05 King has to be fully entombed by his pieces for it to be smothered mate. Instead, that is its close cousin: suffocation mate.

My main tactical issue is working off a memory of a bad first analysis. Like at 9:00, I thought the whole position was a back rank but the issue was the knight could block it on f8 (as if K was on g8). So I go through moves, see Rc3, but I got stuck being so sure I needed to deflect or capture the knight first. When you then showed it, I was like "but the knight! ... can't block?" I don't know if there's tips for like questioning your first bad take or something. Anyway thanks!!

Great video as always, your videos are rapidly becoming my favorite chess content on youtube. I was thinking at 9:53 maybe Rd8+ Qe8 Rxe8+ Rxe8 Qxf6 followed by mate is even a little more forcing than Qxc6? Edit: Why do i take the Q with Rxe8 😅, I can immediately play Qxf6+ with mate on g7.
Rd8+ they can play Nf8 right? Rxf8+ Rxf8 Qxc6 black has got 2 rooks for a Queen. But for Nf8 you can play Rxc8. If they take your rook it's mate on f6 g7, if they take your queen it's mate on f8. So it works I guess.
@@srikrishnan1708 Looks like it still works agreed. But the fact I didn't even consider Nf8 is a worrying flaw in my calculation skills.
@@Carrinthe Hehe happens to me too. Brain fades. I literally missed a mate in 3 yesterday when I was attacking with 3 pieces after sacking 3 pawns. Even worse, it was a pattern that I had seen so many times in puzzles.
Also, for Rxc8 black can play Kg8, we take on c6 and the game kind of goes on. Mate will come in a few moves. But Qxc6 first brings the whole house down. c8, a4 and f6 is under attack. If Qxc6 Kg8, then Qxf6 Rc7 Rd8 and mate on f8. If Qxc6 Rf8, then Rd8 still with a decoy with the mate on f6, if black hangs on with Kg8, then Qxf6 with g7 mate unstoppable. So Qxc6 essentially seems to be forced mate in all lines. Irina's way seems to be cleaner and forcing.
This is a nice calculation exercise, in finding forced mate in all lines, but in a game with less time if I saw Rd8 Nf8 Rxc8 and Rd8 Qe8 Qf6, I'll just go for it and won't bother with calculating Qxc6 at all. As Daniel Naroditsky says "Attacks need not always end in mate. If you're up 800 pieces, it's really difficult to lose the game. So usually picking up a bunch of material is the safest way to convert an attack if there's no forced mate that you see."

Absolutely. Alexandra Kosteniuk is 100% the strongest women in chess in terms of chess knowledge. Will she win all the time? No. But I don’t think any woman on the planet has more theoretical chess knowledge than her.
