In the UK, British Telecom (BT) has started (controversial) process of removing/disabling copper connected landline phones, as BT is withdrawing support for them (for reasons not entirely evident, but may be commercially driven). The replacement of all landlines by the end of 2025, by BT and other service providers, is expected to be a VOIP service for UK customers. It is not yet known if all service providers will provide the replacement VOIP service. Anyway, VOIP will come to the UK in a big way. Your explanation of VOIP on mobile devices is imteresting and timely as it provides another option.
A very valuable channel. Greetings from Poland. I have a question, what do you think about communicators based on the matrix protocol? Could you make a video about it?
Why did you pull your fantastic baresip setup and onfiguration tutorial? Hopefully you will re-up. Thank you for this channel and your work and shop. Brilliant.
Thanks for another wonderful video. I have used Linphone for a few years and love it except for one pet peeve which makes me want to try Baresip. The pet peeve (confirmed with the developer as such via the list serve) is that it is incompatible with contacts stored in the phone book with the + symbol before the country code, i.e. +1 for the Canada and the US. Linphone works with the country code by itself, i.e. 1 (or any other country code) by itself. For a person who has all of his contact with a + it is cumbersome to have to create another field of the same number without the + just to allow it to work with Linphone. I am going to try Baresip to see if it is different in this sense, especially since you liked it's behavior (behaviour) otherwise. Thanks again!
Hey , can u help us what to choose molly vs signal messaging app ? 1. Why molly is known as fork of signal ? 2. If signal is opened source then why is it not available in f-droid ? 3. What is the proprietary of signal app ? Please guide us on this topic 🙏🙏🙏
I haven't used Molly. I just might check it out. Signal says that their "anti-spam" code is proprietary. The official Session Messenger, for instance, is not in F-Droid because it includes google Firebase notification code for "Fast Notifications". F-Droid has a version called "Session F-Droid" that has that code removed. Could be something similar with Signal.
What accent is that? I noticed Rob Braxman seems to have a similar sort of accent. It's not open source, but Zoiper is also a good option for those who feel like the open source options are not sufficient. I like Linphone, but I have had 2 main problems with it: 1. It doesn't remember my SMS history properly. That being said it's one of the only apps -and maybe the only FOSS one- that supports SMS _at all._ 2. I can't figure out why the heck it's not playing any audio notification when I get an SMS message. I do get notifications from other apps from what I recall (almost no other apps I have will actually send notifications though, but I do recall a sound playing from non-SIP SMS messages) I've used Zoiper a bit in the past and I might try it out again despite not being FOSS due to how it didn't have those issues from what I recall. edit: or maybe I should try BareSIP. I didn't realize it had SIP SMS support. Aside from it being implied at the end of the video I don't recall it being mentioned as supporting SMS, but maybe I wasn't paying attention.
Hi can you expand on backend side of things? How do I set up whole thing so I can leave my sim with phone number sitting at home and enjoyng myself with data-only sim? Do I need some sim dongle to plug into a computer and what software should I install?
You need a VoIP service (SIP) from a provider. I have used voip.ms and it works. I've also used Telnyx and it works, too, but is more complicated to setup. There are many others. No dongles needed.
Hi, this video was awesome and packed with useful info! It really helped me understand a bit more the options I have. I installed Linphone, and your video was fundamental on my decision. I have a quick question, since you are an expert in SIP VoIP, are you aware of any open source SIP service that I can use to get an international phone number outside of the US? Thanks again for the informative video!
You can get International numbers through VoIP.ms VoIP providers are under mandates from the respective governments to give them wire taps if the government so wishes... Keep that in mind when making phone calls.
I've got linphone installed on two devices and can ring myself from one device to the other. But can't quite figure out two things: 1. how to call real phone numbers e.g. a shop friend, or local swimming pool 2. how to have other people call/txt me on a real number, so I can use it to verify myself with a one time code sent as a txt message. This is currently a problem when I am travelling overseas as my normal phone number doesn't work. Thanks for any help.
Sounds like something with the interaction between Linphone and your VoIP provider is not working right. I have used VoIP.ms with it and it works fine.
Mate that session app is dog shit the burn function doesn’t work… and the messages are stored somewhere when they shouldn’t be… I had to reinstall the app because I was having troubles with it and old the old messages were there… got rid off it immediately
Known issue. Burn (timed delete) function has brought lots of trouble for the developers. Implementing it in a decentralized system is difficult. Messages are stored for 2 weeks in a swarm. Unlike a centralized system like Signal, everything in a decentralized system like Session is much more difficult to implement. Disappearing messages has been a challenge to make work reliably, likely due to the fact that messages are stored in a swarm of 5-7 decentralized servers.

Thanks interesting. Thanks!
Thank you for the linphone chatroom settings tip! Now I can see received messages.

Great information delivered with a cool accent. Thank you for your service.

Can you please show how to import your phone number to linphone and baresip?
Thanks for the idea. Porting a phone number depends on the VOIP provider, and all are slightly different.

Thanks. Very helpful. These apps need to be more widely used.
Glad it was helpful!

Signal top!
?
cloaked app
?
I will be contacting you in a few weeks. 👍
Thanks! Session is the best way. PrivacyProShop is the username on Session
Could you use these VOIP numbers with Signal or no?
Yes, you can.
