Thanks man! Fun project for the kids. I'm keeping a sharp eye out for fish floats now. I could always buy them but finding/repurposing is the fun part!
@@PNWSamson Well hopefully the urchins don't take over like they have on the Northern California coast in recent years, its really done a number on the lush kelp beds we used to have along with the Red Abalone population. Anyways, best of luck and dive safe....
@@duanescot thanks man, and same story here. Just not at that specific spot. I'm heading to the west coast of Vancouver Island today and I'll be seeing the coastline decimated by the purple urchin too. Sucks.. save diving as well man! Have a good one
This video makes me so jealous of what you guys have up there. I feel like Northern California is urchin barrens for miles. I hope the recent recovery has it looking closer to this soon.
Unfortunately the same is true here. I was stoked to see some kelp but it's no longer the norm or to be expected. Most of the west and east coast is all barren too. Sucks, but it makes these dives that much more special now I suppose. On a positive note, our sea otter populations are exploding on the northern island and their populations are slowly coming south. Hopefully that trend continues!
@@yyjsoup_productions I'm confused, what regs did I break? Are you referring to the spearfishing? I'm pretty up on the regulations and I do my best to promote them. ruclips.net/video/9QQ1fv770TQ/видео.html
Basically from the eastern southern side of Vancouver Island , Across to The city of Vancouver BC down into the Puget sound of Washington State in clouding the Seattle area there is a few places like this , but more places with out the Sea life as much , You need to go to the West side of Vancouver island and up for the best diving with lots more sea life and kelp beds ,
Hiya . . . wow what a deal. Pre-congrats to Achraf #DivingSports Vancouver !! Luv the idea of people coming together to do 'trade' of service, skill etc. We are sorely lacking in that in Canada so great to hear. "EPIC" #SalishSea #VancouverIsland Lingcod and nautical decore for the win . . . great shots. sidenote: {Truly plllease Chris you all 'must' consider using hardstick style longstay mineral sunblock across nose & cheeks especially + lips}. The babies especially will benefit -example is Aveeno sensitive skin/for babies-kids but is for EVERYONE in purple plastic container. I use it constantly. Probably can get larger size as would need it--maybe something via Amazon that is proven to be legit. Prevention is key. {not even a mother and yet... muthering haha}
Yeah, it was a great deal. Win win for everyone! And you're correct. I definitely need to start wearing sunscreen. My eyes and skin see way too much UV. Being on the water just amplifies that too! I appreciate the advice!
Awesome video once again. I recently hiked the west coast trail. I can’t believe how many fishing floats we hiked past. Saw at least 250 of them. They were piled up with the drift wood. Some were huge commercials floats too.
Yeah man, brutal. And for each float, there is a ghost trap on the bottom somewhere. Scary thought. I wanna find a jackpot of em to bring home so I'll have to get on that trail. Any idea what an easy to access part would be?
@@PNWSamson You would have to go from Bamfield because on the Port Renfrew side you need to catch the ferry across and hike the entire trail from there. It would be a full day hike to get to one of the beaches from Bamfield. And you would have to carry them all out by hand. It’s doable
@@PNWSamson An idea of mine is to start an organization and take a boat out along the West Coast and collect floats and clean up the beaches, then sell the floats for half the price of new ones. They’d probably sell quite easily, and I would be cleaning up the beaches. Maybe create a partnership with some landfills and recycling centres to decrease the cost of dealing with the trash
@@tannernabozniak5196 Yeah man that's a great idea. Plus, people like me like them as decor. Lots of people have fish floats around there property in beachy communities. Granted, they probably found them, but I'm sure there would be a market!
I have not. I wish! We do have some Mola Mola that come by our coast from time to time. They are high on my dive bucket list so hopefully I encounter one one day.
Thanks! Yeah they are all edible but some species are closed and some are a more sustainable option than the other. For example, the yellow eye rockfish are off limits and Copper rockfish and Black Rockfish would be a more sustainable option than China Rockfish and Quillback. I've had the chance to shoot both Quillback and China but I opted to just go for the Black. I was thinking about doing a taste test with the 3 though one day.
@@PNWSamson Not asking for fishing spots, but I'll be at Rathtrevor beach in July, is there anything to see in terms of "snorkeling" around that area? Never been to Vancouver island before.
@@midik123 Hmm, I've never dove there before but my gut feeling is there is not much. It's all sandy and not much in terms of rockfish, Lingcod or huge amounts of diversity. Be a good spot to look for Dungeness though! Maybe check out beachcombers if your looking for a good snorkel or the Moorecroft community park.
another great video Chris! me and my mate are south islanders, and started freediving almost a year ago. gotta tell ya, your videos have been a major inspiration for the both of us. over the winter we took an AIDA 2 course and have continued weekly dynamic pool training with our instructor, ( she's an absolute machine with a couple records). Through the course and the pool training, a few of us have begun diving together on weekends. A good little group. in fact I speared my first fish off clover point of all places on the 8th! anyway, I'm a huge fan, and wanted to throw out that if you ever wanted to head out to the south island there are a couple of us that would be thrilled to meet up. there are some gorgeous spots around east sooke. would love to pick your brain for any tips and tricks to harvesting
Amazing dude! It's such an exciting journey. Congratulations on the first fish. All sounds good to me! Shoot me a message on Instagram and maybe we can link up on a dive this summer. @@yyjsoup_productions Yes, going into the interim closure was a mistake. Once we realized we were in there we immediately took the most direct out. It was an honest mistake that many have made. I'm not excusing it but at the same time I'm trying to raise awareness around the topic.
@@PNWSamson Thank you for your kind offer. You are a gentleman. I never knew there is such underwater life on Vancouver Island. Thank you so much for the video. I enjoy them very much, and learning something new every day!
yeah dude no worries. but yeah, I have no problem grabbing urchin for people if they're willing to meet me on the shore. they are an overabundance so the more that are eaten the better.
There is one place in Nanaimo, the co-op, that I live super close to. I believe there is one station in Abbotsford and one in Victoria. Considering its eco-friendly it's not easy to find. Only certain vehicles can run on flex though.
