- Looks familiar, doesn't it?
For the first time since 1992, the mysterious CD surfing Sonic tech demo is now available!
This is a tech demo was presented at SCES 1992 and was created by the Sega Multimedia Studio, a then newly formed developer within Sega of America for creating high budget games for the Sega CD. This demo was created to showcase the capabilities of the upcoming Sega CD which was set to be released later that year in the fall. The demo is notorious for being misidentified as an upcoming Sonic game for the Sega CD (either as an original game titled "Super Sonic" or sequences for a presumed port of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which was also presented for the first time at SCES 1992). The demo features various sequences that test some of the hardware capabilities of the Sega CD, such as full motion video, sprite rotation, and Redbook audio.

People, we are literally looking at a NEW piece of video game history right now, just, take the moment in.
@@neutralnarration1463 This was considered impressive by 1990 standards.
i bet you're proud of this comment rivet
Yeah this is impressive
And firmly grasp it
A lot of people seem disappointed. Unfortunately, this is kinda what's to be expected out of what is essentially a tech demo. This wouldn't had been a blip on anyone's radar if it wasn't mistaken for a Sonic game in-development.
It's nice to have an it answers one or tw oquestions but I think people will be more interested by what's to come
i could not POSSIBLY be any LESS disappointed are you kidding me
I mean today they're releasing a Sonic CD prototype
naaah, it looks surreal af :D maybe not that much of the feature showcase as in the scene demos but the atmosphere is out there xD especially when watched at 4 AM right before Hallo 😅
@@neutralnarration1463 What Genesis tech demos do we have ROM dumped again?
0:51 batman's WTF face 😂😂😂😂
BATMAN JUMPSCARE
01:48 totally worth it
OMG this looks straight outta a meme LOL
football man is the best dude of all, why is no one talking about him
Exactly, He Points At You.
He’s very cool
lol its fuckin Joe Montana
@@techguy348 *Joe Mama.
That's joe montana the HOF QB.
Absolutely glorious from start to finish. Hell, there's even a Cool World clip
0:50 batman jumpscare
There's a lot of shitposting material in this new discovery
Yeah, like this is so evident that Sonic's character is in fact based on Classic American cartoons, as this came out before the release of AoStH as a cartoon series. Because you can clearly see they included a clip of Bugs Bunny.
hey I know you
@@NegaTheImpmon9508 Should I?
football_man.gif seems to be making the rounds.
ANueUtsuho I’m glad football man is being shared.
Wow, you finally found the source of those Sonic images after all those years, that's great!
...also this was not what I was expecting
WaffleToast215 At least the demo using the Bugs Bunny clip confirms that Sonic’s character was based on Naoto’s love for Classic American cartoons. This cartoony aspect became the basis for AoStH, which he likes, when I shared it with him.
@@robbiewalker2831 I'm not really following your logic here. The clips they chose for this demo have nothing to do with the creation of the Sonic The Hedgehog character.
andyukmonkey Well, I wouldn’t know if the sprites were only made in Japan, but I do know that Naoto Ohshima took inspiration from Classic American Cartoons to make Sonic.
0:51 is clearly the best part
Thank you
I agree completely.

2:00 now we know where the Sega Saturn bios came from
I don't quite get it.
@@aheiiv Just start on your Saturn and hidde the Bios menu, you will see.
@@Cerb3ro I did not know everyone had a Sega Saturn suddenly
This is a historic moment holy shit
Alright. Get to ripping those Sonic sprites
To say that this isn't an interesting little piece of gaming history would be quite an understatement if you ask me. Even now, this tech demo's got some charm to it.
Cool but why is Sonic's right arm conjoined to his belly
Oh no
Based on Sonic 1/Sonic CD sprites
@@UltraEpicLeader10020 yeah, a good way to see an example of that sprite is the sega smash pak on genesis, they didn't layer the logo right
gotta love 60fps vaporwave
First, the original version of Pleasure Castle, and now this AND WE'RE STILL GETTING THE BETA VERSION OF SONIC CD!
That soundtrack is OUT OF THIS WORLD 😭😭😭
Imagine if it were a revolutionary console... audience reaction on par with Shenmue 3's announcement (or vice versa, if we keep the timeline in mind)
We love you, American football man floating through space!
The front sleeve: Sonic The Hedgehog Presents: A nice city background!
Sonic just hates flying into space, he comes back just to realize the tech demo ended with an eerie twist

The music sounds amazing
I remember reading up articles about the supposed "loading screens from Sonic on CD" on Sonic fan-sides or other ones about betas/unreleased games (boy, x-cult sure was edgy AF). Screenshots didn't feel like they belong to any Sonic game in style but I was stupid enough to eat it up back then.
Tech demo feels to be clumpsily done, in my opinion. Reading up in article how much money Sega has put into this new studio, it doesn't feel that their output quite matched it.
Kudos for finding and sharing it.
It's like someone at Sega peered into the future and saw Ratboy Genius, albinoblacksheep flash animations, and RUclips poops, and this demo reel is their interpretation of what they saw.
WIth how the internet has changed I feel this'll be seen more as a giant shitpost than a demonstration of the Sega/Mega CD hardware
I don't even feel like it's a demo because of how much internet I've seen
Knowing what the Sega CD is capable of, I see it pretty equally as both 😁
I think this was the demo from CES that Sega used.
@@MajinErick this is also the same demo that appeared on that Sonic 2 CD magazine.
it's both
"A Switch? Haha... No, son. You're getting a Sega CD for Christmas. After all, Sega does what NintendooooooOHMYGOD WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!?!"
Lol
@@nyandwielijah wow a comment from my older account i found nice
I also do what Nintendon't, because I don't make video game systems.
1:36: Windows 3.1 screensaver
It's funny how this video reminded me that Cool World exists. lmao
sigh, what could have been. :(
interesting green hill zone with diffrent instruments
I'm not sure what I was expecting out of a demo like this but this definitely wasn't it.
Ah, this is cool! Before now, it was just a bunch of red-tinted low resolution screenshots, but now…it's here!
When I saw the original pictures, the one I wondered about was the one with the angel (or whatever) in the background, so it was great to see 1:29! I guess it only looked weird because of the image size and tinting, because it's better here.
how do i find the original pictures?
2:44, 1:32 looks like that old magazine screenshot
Because it is
Cuz it is
It's funny how they were allowed to (and actually used) American properties from Warner Brothers like Batman and Looney Tunes. And then they just threw in Cool World.
This is history in the making dude
Can't wait for the rest of the releases
0:15 SONIC GOT TROUGH the disk hole without breaking it
wait thats illegal
Sonic got through the hole ACT 1
Time Bonus: 100000
Ring Bonus: 000000
Total: 100000
Reminds me of when console demos usually looked better in photos published by GamePro or Electronic Gaming Monthly magazines.
For what its worth... there is some of my music in that!!!
Hello do you remember which keyboards/romlers you used to make these songs? i hear some roland sc55 sounds.
@@mmr2241 There were three different composers on this demo. Each of us had a variety of synthesizers and sampling software. I remember gear from Roland, Emu, Yamaha, Ensoniq, ProTools, and of course the Sega Genesis itself!!
I am absolutely happy to see this! I am very glad this has been preserved. This is history right here.
At 2:11, I never noticed who those characters were until Sega Genesis games came out for the switch. I found out that they are Toe Jam and Earl
Should have used more softcore porn footage
Someone will edit that in, I hope.
profile pic checks out 😏😏

1:48 jo monta jumpscare
(caution: vary scery)
Imagine explaining this to a kid who knew nothing about Sega in the 90's or 90's culture.
I see they used the PCM drums used in the American BIOS music. Except that I wasn't expecting them to be loud lol
yes and it looks like these instruments seeing from the roland canvas synthesizer
1:25 good to see some old fashioned ladder effect
1:31 what is this tho
They're pre-recorded in the Redbook audio tracks....rather sloppily, it is a tech demo after all
@@MadoKage I know, that's why it's so cool to listen to. We may have been recently blessed by NukeYKT's work, but to hear this coming from an emulated source, or any Mega Drive past the first model is simply cool on a conceptual level, because it is the official YM2612 "sound" as far as the console is concerned and you needed the first model to experience it, but you could here because it was digitally captured from SEGA.
The music at 3:36 almost sounds like something you'd find in the Faulconer DBZ score
2:45 looks familiar...
Many people identified this wrong as "Sonic 2 CD"
Why does redbook audio green hill zone sound so good?
That's Redbook audio? Just sounded like Fucked up FM if I'm honest.
sega ventured into vaporwave
0:44 - Sega dropped the "Cool World" RPG project for no reason in favor of Popful Mail
random football man at 1:48 gets me every time
I feel like I was on a drug hallucination. If this was on SEGA PICO i think it would be more crazy
2:40 his tune sounds like flame mammouth start sequence
Sega CD is so underrated
I really like the music in this
Music on 1:35 sounds veeery SNESy
yes it looks like some snes instrument samples come from this, very roland-like synthesizer
this whole thing is just a fever dream, lol
Why intro sounds like old 90's shows about love
SEGA Multimedia Studio likes this
Hey HP!, I Like your Videos!
Also, i liked that SegaCD/MegaCD Demo
2:42 "Holy f*ck, it's hot even at night!"
This might sound stupid, but I have a slight newfound nostalgia from this back in late 2019 when this was playing on the stream that Sonic CD 0.02 was revealed. I remember sitting in chat with everyone and just theorizing and being hyped for the reveal with this in the back, Sonic Month really did wrap up 2019 in the best way for me before Christmas. Wish I could go back, heh.
that and the Sonic 3 prototype reveal were amazing
I love Hidden Palace :)))
kinda same but then 2020 sucked donkey cock. mixed feelings. 🥀
Has anyone got this working on Fusion ? I tried booting the CD using the USA, JAP and EUR bios but it just goes to the Audio CD player GUI. I can hear the audio tracks OK using that player but it doesn't seem to boot - do I need a beta version of the Sega CD BIOS ?
Update: The 'Mega CD (J(UE)) - M2 V2.00 ().bin' bios seems to play it
@Arnold101Knight You can get it from Hidden Palace's website.
Load the .cue file.
Does this make anyone else miss the 90s really bad?
We all thought this was Sonic 2 CD or whatever and now we get to see Batman and the Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
Wait, were those fmv’s being scaled and rotated! Wow...
The movie fragments look like they were made for the gba video, but hey it was 1992 what did ya expect.
gex the gecko 4 beta
thank you hidden palace please
the music goes hard
1:35 - 2:35. Mars, Venus (the first codename of Sega Saturn), Neptune... Sega in 1991 tried to show further failed consoles. Hmmmm
is it just me, or is the ring sound used in sonic advanced, it isnt the usual ring sound, also i need to see if its possible to rip that short ver of GHZ, it may have been the one inteanded for the original mega CD port
Sonic: Damn it tiny eggman! I just wanna hold a cd in peace without you having to spin it!

3:35 It's hella mythical tf
Oh also @Hidden Palace is this real hardware? Asking because out of all the popular emulators, only Kega seems to digest your rip properly and it has huge issues with audio sync on this (as per CodenameGamma's vid, I had the same problem on all versions supporting your rip - from 3.52 or something)
asking too much probably xD
Eggman kinda looks sus
So that's what a cool world
0:02-0:12 was used in Sonic Mania after defeating the final boss
The instrument is the same, the notes? Nope.
I want to make a sonic game based off this
Why did they show clips from popular movies and shows of the time? (Also I can tell this either came out after 1992 are during 1992 because of the Batman returns clip)
Holy. Sheets. I thought this was lost.
“What are you gonna use for your important new cd add on?”
*Looney Tunes*
Funny thing i have this disk it works with my sega cd
I actually combined all the .bin files and made it into an .iso but when I load it I only get the CD player. Should Sega CD tracks get combined? This only works with PS1 games apparently.
@Arnold101Knight hiddenpalace.org/Sega_Multimedia_Studio:_Sega_CD_Demo_(May_29,_1992_prototype)
Also I fixed the problem; I didn't realize the emulator had to load from the .cue file.
Sad becouse is region locked
My american sega cd wont play it
