    Interesting video. Beginning from 15:36 I think you mixed leakage current with reverse recovery current. Leakage current is inherent to all diode types. Especially Schottky diodes have high leakage current. Reverse recovery is a time that the diode needs to block. The current, which flows during reverse recovery is initially equal to the forward current just before the diode is reverse biased. This current is much higher than any leakage current.
    I missed the purpose of diode D2. You mentioned that the diode charges up the output capacitor. However, the output capacitor is also charged via inductor and diode D3.

      Thanks for your feedback. I might have said leakage instead of reverse recovery because in my mind the current that is leaking back before the diode recovers is leakage - but yes - it is called reverse recovery ;) Thank you!!

    Shottky diodes are very different beasts depending on voltage rating! In my mind I'd never thunk a shottky diode for any higher voltage application BECAUSE of leakage currents that one allow to gain ridiculosly low Fwd voltage drop at high current (and low capacitance, fast reverse recovery to allow silly switching frequencies). This PFC high voltage shottky sacrifices (certainly pays a high price) in Current Low fwd voltage drop to reduce leakage/capacitance).
    As seemingly everything in electronics life; it's about finding the best compromises!
    Never did the math of what would happen if you would build a PFC with standard recovery diode: reactance alone turns a 10A rectifer diode into a 80 ohm resistor at 50kHz. What a mess that would make 😂

      @KissAnalog  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yes Schottky diodes are great for switching and for reverse recovery. Even Fast diodes or Ultra Fast diodes have a lot higher losses in a boost with continuous conduction.

    Is the UCC281180 the chip you have chosen for the supply ?.....cheers.

      Great question - but I haven't decided yet... I will make the final choice very soon when I show the full design.

    Is that GBU8J correct? It is rated for 600V max. But here in Europe we have 230Vac, that means 325V peaks, that is 650V peak-peak.

    • @Chupacabras222
      @Chupacabras222 5 месяцев назад +1

      Well, that GBU8J is actually correct. Incorrect is the statement, that diode has to withstand peak-peak value (2x 325V). It has to withstand just 325V.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  5 месяцев назад +1

      Great question. So the peaks do not happen at the same time - they are 180 degrees out of phase, so they take turn charging the cap. The cap will charge to the peak of the voltage - and this is referred to as 'peak charge'. So that voltage will be on the cathode of 2 of the diodes - but referenced to what? So once you think about the reference - the peaks are always positive in relation to this - so you don't have a negative 325V peak - it is flipped over to a positive peak - relative to the reference. Hope that makes sense. Maybe this is worth a short video;)

    • @Chupacabras222
      @Chupacabras222 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@KissAnalog I have simulated it in LTspice. So I know that diodes need to withstand just peaks, not peak-peak values. That is 325V. So GBU8J is well suitable for that.

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  5 месяцев назад +1

      Awesome! Thanks! Even LTspice gets it right;)

      Thank you! Yes I think YT sees that my viewers are not interested so they stop sharing. It’s too bad that design videos damage my channel. Maybe I have to be careful not to post two design videos back to back…??

      If it helps, this happens even to bigger channels. I'm watching Gamers Nexus and they do some more technical videos which they love to do but don't get as many views. They're not even that technical but for the masses they are not passive consumption and they tune off. And of all electronics engineers that are there maybe only one in twenty will be interested in design. That's the way it is. I love these design videos. Thank you for them

    Why does a pfc converter have to follow the input voltage? I made a pfc converter with constant current input and I'm getting 95 to 97 percent power factor and huge power out, but low max current, so low IR2 losses. Give me a call. It's a new ball game. Let's talk for an hour Eddie. Let's make things better, or teach me why it's not smart KISS

    • @KissAnalog
      @KissAnalog  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for this interesting feedback! The current is not constant current though - it is current mode controlled - I think is what you mean. The current follows a scaled version of the voltage waveform - so it is sinusoidal as well. Maybe it is time I do a live video and we can talk shop;) ??

    • @MakerBrothers
      @MakerBrothers 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the reply! I actually mean constant current input. I just made a 3 minute video to show you how I made it happen. I even show the current across the current sense resistor on the scope. I hope you check it out. Thank you!
