    Camped at Dry Lake years ago. Before they closed the road. A family brought their newborn baby with them. The father carried it in his arms. It cried most of the night. I always thought how crazy that was.
    We didn’t get much sleep, but the area is beautiful.

    Dry Lake is beautiful even when it's dry because the grass is still green.

      Nice, yea, it's a great one. Lower slopes are starting to recover from the last fire too.

    I used to hike the South Fork Trail in the early 70's. We were allowed to drive up the rutty dirt road to where the trail crosses it just above Horse Meadows and below the Poopout Hill junction. Looks like the Lake Fire damage is still visible. I really want to hike this area again, but I live several hours drive away now (and I am 50+ years older now), so getting there is a bigger deal now to do it than it was.

      You should show up and give it a try. You can hike up to the old lot / Poop Out hill if not all the way. I've spoken to rangers and they mentioned the same thing about driving right up years ago. When it became an official Wilderness Area they moved the road / lot back to comply with the regulations.

      In December 2023 I tried to do this hike twice but the snow blocked the trail at the saddle the first time and the second time my snow boots fell into pieces when I stepped on the snow. 😔😔😔 safety first 🤷‍♀️

    Just did this, camped out at the lake and went back down the next day, BEFORE YOU HEAD DOWN, you must need a recreation pass to park there, the closest place to purchase it is 15 minutes away at a liquor store called the country store I believe, right next to the fire station

      Nice, hope the overnight was fun, such a nice place. And yes on the permit - all that info is in the guide in the link - you can also use a National Parks Pass (link in the guide) which you can order from REI and get you in everywhere national all the time. Good value for the $$$

    How much water do you take on a hike like this? It looks like you only have a 3 liter camelback

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  3 года назад

      It's only 11 or so miles, so 2L does me fine when it's all dry. If there's water you can filter it and go minimal.

    When was this hike? do you know if dole lake has water? Do you know if any springs up to San Bernardino peak from the San Bernardino trailhead have water?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  4 года назад

      I'd check sgwa.org for the status of the springs. Dry Lake usually has water until the summer / early spring in a normal year. This is from June.
