Thanks for sharing your process! To the outside world running is physical, but there's so much mental aspects to it too. ❤ Love the Running Channel for bringing everything to the table.
As non elites all we want to do is to run well. Finishing a 100mile race is going to mean you have to run it well. If you're injured or really not fit enough then you almost certainly cannot run well. So then not starting is your best option. James you are always an inspiration to us lot, keep well!
Also Sarah keeps trying to push Andy out of his comfort zone but has been chilling doing marathon training for her many marathons. (Amazing progress on that btw) Make her train for a 1500 or something
Saw the Thames Path 100 one year while my wife and I were on a walking weekend staying near Goring. Could not believe what was going on because we only stumbled across it by accident…FOUR marathons back to back it was insane. They ran through the night so people we saw on the riverbank the day before (even shouting out and encouraging us as well with our own walking - wait guys YOU are the people doing something extraordinary 😯) we’re finishing on the Sunday. It looked BRUTAL. Even the best runners looked like ninety-year olds needing a zimmer frame at the end. RESPECT to anyone doing this. You really have got your xxxx together to have so much determination to keep going. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
So important to listen to your body. I picked up an injury 3 months before the Birmingham Half Marathon this year, which took a month to recover from. So I then only had 2 months left to train. Fortunately took the sensible decision and did the 10k instead. And a friend was due to do the London Marathon this year but got injured. She was also sensible and had her entry deferred until next year.
Love James’ experience. Currently contemplating if I’m recovered enough to start in the Zugspitze ultra mid June. The perspective of backing out to run later is a valuable comment.
Always great to hear from James, never heard the acronym DNS used before, glad you explained it. I was considering a DNS for my first ultra next week but chatted to Sarah at Puma the run club, given I'm just lacking a bit in fitness and not injured any more I'm going to start. I'd love to finish but will be happy with a DNF for the experience
I was supposed to be running my first 100 miler today. I decided a few weeks ago that I was not prepared for it and chose to DNS. Thanks for today's dose encouragement, James.
The progression seems natural. After the marathon in the fall/winter Andy prepares for a spring 50k. Then a summer 50 miler or 100k. And finally a fall/winter 100 miler! It is such a tidy plan. I can’t imagine he would object to a well-structured and orderly progression like this :)
I have a whole spreadsheet of race calendars with Plans A through D🤣 Plan A is "everything goes perfectly" and Plan D is "I'm injured and need to do low impact events". This year we're doing Plan C which is "a couple twinges but mostly good, more mental work required". Pivoting is essential and spreadsheets are fun🎉
To Katie from Lancaster, I ran a disastrous 1st marathon, running & walking the last 8 miles, in 5 1/2 hours in March, and then I ran a half-marathon PB (2 hours, 10 minutes) exactly 7 weeks later. I just followed the last 7 weeks of my half marathon plan, and found that my marathon training had made me such a stronger runner. Best of luck on your upcoming half!
I pulled out of a Marathon earlier this year due to injury that I didnt think would heal in time. it was a huge mental challenge as it felt like a failure, but ultimatley it was the best choice for recovery and the rest of the years races. great topic to discuss
Pulled a hamstring doing strides today. Going to have to push the coming out of retirement park run back a few weeks. Will have to ride my bike behind my kids while they do their runs this week (McFarland style).
Honestly I think Andy should do a 50 miler. It’s doable and a good start into an Ultramarathon territory. I mean we want him to enjoy the experience not be miserable and never try anything like this again! 50 miles is challenging but completely doable if you find a nice beginner one with a reasonable time limit.
Andy, I know that track smell well! Nothing says "summer" like it! (Also, DANG: James DOES have a stupendous voice on those studio mics. Could listen to 'im talk all day... :) Love the show! It's my Saturday pre-run breakfast listening!
I always do sock shoe, sock shoe. I live in Indonesia- there’s no shoes inside, so I always sit on the porch and put the shoes on when they’re outside. Besides that, it’s never cold enough to wear socks inside, and all floors are tiled so really easy to pick up dust and hairs on your socks. It would feel so weird to wear socks inside the house.
I’m so looking forward to see Andy run a hundred mile race. What a fantastic idea. I’ll definitely get some friends to sub the channel and have a watch party. 🎉🎉🎉
After a weekend off (getting drunk and making bad life choices) I got to enjoy my morning run down the beach with one ear listening to this and one to the sea 👌 all this running business isn't too bad all the time 😂
Kinda wish I'd seen this before attempting to run my first 100miler - Pennine Journey North Ultra 112 miles with a back injury 🙄🙈 DNFd after 56 miles as was reduced to walking which meant I'd never make the checkpoint cut-offs 😬👀 I have to just treat it as an expensive recce run though now as I've already signed for it again next year 😊😎
James, the A100 is great first 100 miler. as It is effectively four 25 mile out and backs with an easily accessible drop bag after each 25 miles. Plus 50 odd miles are almost completely flat, although those 50 miles is the Thames path which is one of the most boring places to run.
Does James have a coach? Get one to sort your training out for A100. You’re absolutely right that for a hundred miler you need your brain in top shape. Be great if the running channel could share your journey with a coach, show the training plan (running and the head stuff) etc. you’re right that you can’t wing it for a hundred miler 😂
You are still young to take on such a challenge. It's for hardened battered runners, not little girls with ponytails. There'll come a time when you are ready it's just not now.
James, your decision to prioritize your health and wellbeing took a lot of courage and fortitude. I applaud you for it. Thank you for sharing your process and good luck into your training for the next goal.
About 4 weeks before this years Manchester marathon I decided to drop out and rest as I had pain in both knees and It hurt to even walk, decided to rest for a couple of weeks and the day off the marathon I went for a 5k run. I felt great on that run. All i thought about was I should have just done the marathon. I'm glad I didn't as I know I would have made things alot worse, but all I could think about is I should have done the marathon.
There's far too much of "running is such an incredible drama" in every episode on this channel. Why can't running be seen as a solid 6 or a 7? For most people, a solid 6 is a vast improvement on people's day-to-day lives. Running doesn't need to be a portrayed as a 10 especially as it hardly ever is, if at all for most.
I always DNS a few races each year, nothing wrong with that. The focus is my A race which is usually August/September, the training races are optional.
Spent most of my youth, and a good part of my early adult life, on the track. I totally understand the nostalgia - the smell of the baking track and freshly mown grass in summer. It just makes you want to run FAST!
Thanks for sharing your process! To the outside world running is physical, but there's so much mental aspects to it too. ❤ Love the Running Channel for bringing everything to the table.

Ultrarunners like that are a different breed of runners aren’t they?!

@@runningchannel doing Embra Ultra's Three Castles 50k from Rochester to Tonbridge, follows the river so is pretty much flat 🙂

@@runningchannel Maybe... but almost definitely a 50 miler.

He’s a legend, what can we say 💙
Omg ! Do Hyrox! It’s amazing !!! It’s brutal but in all the best ways !!!

Andy should do the ACP 100k. It's flat 2-3 mile loops. In March.
Please be nice to Andy and no to the 100 miles
