    What makes Ys so special and one of the best series of all time is the music. Ys Books I & II probably has my favorite soundtrack of all time, blows my mind everytime!!

    Great video. My intro to RPGs was the late 1970s RPG# on the Apple II, including Wizardry and other titles like those. I played a lot of computer-based RPGs in the 1980s, including many SSI titles - but Dragon Warrior (I played/beat in 1989) changed the way I look at them, it was my first JRPG and I fell in love with the entire genre. But in 1993 I bought a TG-16 and then acquired the CD unit and Ys 1/2. I was completely hooked, it was the first game I ever played with CD music. The game was addictive, the storyline compelling, the gameplay very fun, and with the exception of that boss that split into a bunch of bats, I enjoyed everything about it.
    I have bought this game for multiple platforms and beat it on all of them: SMS, PSP, DS, and then iOS. I loved the DS graphics, I don’t like games that are hyperrealistic and the graphics stayed cartoonish enough for my liking.
    I look forward to seeing your other videos! I’ve played and beaten many RPGs over the years and am looking forward to seeing if I missed something I really need to play...

    I found your videos last month, I think they are great. Super in depth and very informative. I'm super pleased that it isn't a dead series and that you are still making new episodes :) Ys is one of my favourite games, yet I didn't really get to play it when it first came out. I ended up playing the pc version in the early 2000s when I was in high school after my friend showed me ys 6 :)

      LightFykki Me too! First heard about it in one of his old videos. Since then I've played Ys I and II (TG16), III (TG16 and the japanese PS2 remake), Oath in Felghana (PSP) and I'm currently replaying Ys I on both the Saturn (japanese exclusive Falcom Classics Collection) and on my PC (YS I & II Chronicles +). Such an amazing series, I aim to play every single one, including every significant port/remake in the long run.

      Good luck playing all of them. I also played the 4th one on the TurboGrafx16, which is very reminiscent of the original two and last one to directly be so. Also the 6th one on the PS2, which is another good game, similar to Oath in Felghana, although I believe that that one is a bit superior. 5th is more problematic to play, since if I remember correctly, there are only two editions of that game and both are Japanese.

    "Ayy-eh-sthetics"
    Exclude that "ayy" at the beginning. The word becomes 100% less laborious to say.

      And that’s how it’s actually pronounced.

    • @Rocket_scientist_88

      @@DM12128 In both American English and British English, it is a three- syllable word pronounced “ess-THET-ik”. Ignore the”a” at the front, it is a holdover from its Latin roots but we do NOT pronounce it. I mean, one is welcome to pronounce it however one wishes... but there is only one way to say it correctly and that is without the “A” at the beginning.

Also, interestingly, I mentioned this same question to a friend and they brought up Crypt of the Necrodancer. While not really an RPG, it actually does do a form of bumping; albeit VERY different in feel from the speed of the old Ys games.

    • @mr.gentleman2358

      @@alanhirsch4632 I count games like Crypt as turn based roguelike/lite combat. It has its roots in the original Rogue (1980) for PC which many roguelikes and roguelites (ie. Do you have a source on Shinkai doing the portrait and promo art for Ys Eternal? He's specifically credited for directing/producing the opening cinematic(s), whereas Falcom's lead character artist in 1998, Minako Iwasaki, did the illustrations you're crediting to Shinkai. It's a good video, I just want to point this out.
    Same deal with crediting Koshiro for Shenmue's soundtrack when he only composed a few tracks vs. most of the OST coming from SEGA musicians.

    • @mr.gentleman2358
      @mr.gentleman2358  8 лет назад +1

      Looks like my source was wrong on Shinkai and you're definitely right about this. I should have double checked my sources on that one. My mistake. I should have been clearer on the Shemnue part. I'll try to add some annotations to correct my mistakes. Thank you.

    Mr. Gentleman, I know you did Phanatsy Star before, but I would like you to do the foray into action RPGs by the franchise, before it became a Monster Hunter clone with Phantasy Star Nova.

    • @maychrzak
      @maychrzak 7 лет назад +1

      Are you attempting to say that Phantasy Star Nova is a Monster Hunter Clone?

    • @whitewolf3051
      @whitewolf3051 7 лет назад

      Paul Maychrzak Let's see getting parts from defeated enemies, crafting weapons, armors although they are not costumes as well so they don't change appearence, and costumes from said parts you get from monsters, yep very Monster Hunter like. Attempt is weak when all signs are there. Before, one would get weapon, armor, costume drop from enemies, or bought at stores, never crafted.

      @@L2Nuku The initial PSO, which came out back in the late 90s or early 2000s was more like other RPGs, weapons, armor, and money would drop, not crafting materials. The crafting came out in PSO2...I think, and I don't know which did crafting first, PSO2 or MH. All I know is that crafting wasn't in the very first jump the action rpg with the Phantasy Star series, PSO.

    • @L2Nuku
      @L2Nuku 3 года назад

      @@whitewolf3051 Yes PSO was very barebones and MH expanded upon it.
      There was a very light crafting mechanic in PSO for special weapons made from enemy parts and you needed a certain quest npc to convert it for you. (I have no idea if there was such a thing in PSU, never played it)
      I read in some interviews that MH copied certain aspects from PSO, but also that PSO2 copied certain aspects from MH, so there's that too ^^

      It’s called “Ys”, and the pronunciation is made clear many times in the game as “EESS”. The only people I’ve ever heard call it “wise” were the guys at game stores who had never played it. The only correct pronunciation is “EESS”.
      As an aside, the original concept and name came from ancient French legends about a mythical city in Brittany that was swallowed by the ocean. (There is a Wikipedia entry about it that is well-written)
