      I didn't see the comments you're referring to so I cannot speak to that. I do agree that using the correct terminology is important. For accuracy and clarity but also having the correct part name is very helpful when sourcing parts and doing further research. Of course, every situation is different but in general, I advocate for that if possible. This is a matter of discourse that should easily be covered matter of factly and not involve triggering anyone. Respectfully give your concern and the reasons why. The goal should be facts and accuracy. The content of this video is great to know. Thank you for bringing it to light. I imagine the same applies to the BR series blowers?

    Thanks for very useful video @themowermedic1. There is actually one mistake - the pin wobble you show at 3:28 seems to be totally normal. I have had a catastrophic cam failure - melted palstic, metal back plate disintegration etc and when replacing I checked the pin and had the same wobble as shown in your wideo at 3m:28s.. So I ordered a new cover and it has exactly the same amount of play in it. I guess this is a design feature to facilitate refitting the cover which might be very difficult if all the holes where machined to very tight tolerances. The hole the pin goies into in the engine block is very tight and hence the cam followers are very stable.

      seems to be the only mitigator, or redesign with harder bushes or even a bearing- never ha to work on one but theres a market for a case plate thats way thicker , stiffer and carries a longer shaft in a bearing.

    The simplest fix for those pin seats that have gone oval is a suitable strip of copper or steel tubing from a refrigerator or air conditioner. Put in the pin, tap in the suitable sized tubing strip to fill up the oval and apply a teeny bit of super glue to the body and tubing to hold them together. Then remove the pin. In the first stage of wear the pin seat on the engine block for the cam wheel and the pin seat on the for the rocker arms are what wear out. Detectable at an early stage by a varying valve clearance at every rotation of the crankshaft.
    Now, the key question, does this fix work. Well, i started doing this in 2003 and have never had any issues.

  • @vincentrobinette1507
    @vincentrobinette1507 3 года назад +7

    I think the solution for the "4-Mix" is to put the best air filter possible on it. An engine that always gets new oil, rather than recirculating contaminated oil should theoretically last for ever. The only source of particulate matter, is through the air intake. Maintaining proper valve clearance is also a good idea. (to protect the cam gear) This is a fascinating engine, I'm interested in getting a leaf blower or something that uses this engine, just so I can experiment with it.

The plastic cam gear with thin backing plate are far weaker than those shafts or the holes they go into. First, I'm not a landscaper, I'm a contract poultry producer. I have allot of buildings to keep trimmed and mowed around on the farm. I have three Stihl's, a FS 130, FS 110 and a FS 90. The 130 and the 110 are the oldest (6-7) years old. I've lost compression with the 130 before and was told to fill the cylinder with Seafoam for a few days and it would dissolve some of the carbon. It worked and the machine worked for about 6 months. Now, both the 110 and the 130 are down again with low compression. I tried the Seafoam trick again with no success. These machines were run using Stihl synthetic 2 stroke oil. About a year ago I changed over to Echo Red Armor oil at the recommendation of a"Chickanic" and the difference was remarkable. The machines run better, consistency. What is causing this issue and what can I do. to resolve the problem? I live in a very rural area of coastal NC and we don't have a very good selection of small engine mechanics.

    • @adammcalpine231
      @adammcalpine231 Год назад

      Not sure if you've gotten an answer yet, but are you half-throttling them, or using them for relatively short periods of time? If you don't get them up to temperature you get incomplete combustion and they foul up, is what I would assume is the root cause of your carbon issue. Echo red armor is just really good oil and has a detergent package to keep the engine cleaner. Assuming you've checked all the obvious things (fuel, air, spark), unhook your spark plug, take the plastic off and take the valve cover off. Spin it over with the rope and make sure you don't have a valve hanging up as it's trying to close or a broken spring. bring it to TDC on compression and make sure valve clearance is correct - this can be done with a basic feeler gauge. Clearance spec will be in your owners manual. If this doesn't work, you can run a leakage test and figure out where the compression is leaking from.

    so once it gets to this point, sell it in a yard sale and buy a new one? have a small collection of all stihl weedeaters, all have a lot of mileage and have issues. i only keep my FS240r in working order cause i havent needed to go to a backup weedeater until lately. we have 2 small residential stihl weedeaters plus an fs90 that hasnt ran in years and was wondering if it was worth it to get it back in working order. but after this video i think its not worth it, sell it at the yard sale. btw the fs240r still runs beautifully IF you can keep it servcied

I bought two of the first ones and competed in the '82 U.S. national contest with an RC Stearman biplane in a scale class and won with a .40 cubic inch four stroke engine. Most noticeable was the huge reduction in noise which I know counted in my favor. The sound it did make was much more in the character of the airplane than the usual two stroke.

      @@THEMOWERMEDIC1 it may be true that alot of electric stuff is junk, however this vid proves that some 4 stroke stuff can also be considered junk. Same goes for the majority of 2 stroke stuff out there today.
      The problems associated with this particular engine could have been alleviated if the engineers were allowed to bush those shafts and not be forced by the accountants to save a few nickles. The same goes for 2 stroke junk being made in china to serve the same purpose of saving those few precious nickels.
      The internal combustion engine has, thru ecology and basic economics, run its course. Electric is just starting to ramp up and soon will prove to be more powerfull and more economical than engine power, plus it can be refueled(charged) while you do something else like drive to the next jobsite.
      No more having to fill equipment before starting work, hard to start , going to gas station, all of which now becomes time working with less overall stress. I think its Electric for the win , if we keep china out of the picture
