Can't tell you much about big square balers as we run a round baler wrapper combination machine. It's a kuhn. The reason we chose it is for the intake design.
On all other balers they have these little "stub" augers at the sides to bring the swath to the right width to fit the size of feed rotor into the chamber. On the kuhn the rotor and auger are one piece.
The benefit is that in short crops on the regular design, there is a space between the pick up tines and the feed rotor that's there to fit the stub augers into, so it can be like a dead spot in crop flow, in the kuhn design because the auger is part of the feed rotor the tines are much closer to the feed rotor and eliminate the dead spot in crop flow.
John deere also use this same design, John deere and kuhn are very closely aligned on forage implements such as mowers and balers. We actually had a roller chamber John deere with the same intake before our kuhn but changed so we could have the combi baler wrapper machine(jd dealer at the time didn't want to sell us the John deere combi version for some reason).
Anyways that's all I know about square balers, John deeres intake would be miles ahead of the others.

The key to making hay (for profit) is to treat it as a business. As you say, you focus on producing as good of a product as possible... on the hay's timetable. To me, the second most important factor is marketing your hay based on it's quality. Too many midwestern farmers treat hay as an afterthought and not as a cash crop. Treated as a cash crop and you'll find some money.

I also think our hay here is more consistent in quality because of the predictable weather and irrigation, as a seller it’s great but as a buyer it’s not good. All of our “ wild horses” term used very lightly came from people dumping their horses because they can not afford hay. Started in 2005-9 seeing the trend happening today of people turning their horses out on state and federal land.

The hay market here in Australia is no different, I remember when I was young n we did mostly small bales, we had hay bale pick up hook to the truck which would stack 6? high, we would thousands of these bales. But with age round bales over took small bales but I prefer bigger squares because safer carting n storage, but our hay feeder is round only. My only advice in buying hay equipment especially balers, please store them in a shed as seen to many balers sit outside n rust internally, then break down. And for anyone wondering what the weather like in Australia this year? It been coolest no 40oC plus days yet but storming late afternoons/nights. We have friends that put up 3x3 big squares and we buy those from anywhere from $80-100 each depending on cutting.. They're not as easy for my wife to handle but each flake is similar to 4 small flakes. We fold them in half to fit our small hay feeders and use 2 flakes. Here's a question for you, when seeding a new hay field do you have a particular mix or brand you like for seed? My dad is getting ready to put everything in hay once the contract farmer is done on our land this year. Thanks.

Go to a hay auction and look at what tells best.
I like a mix of Timothy, orchard grass and alfalfa. Timothy will be in the first cutting by not show up in the rest, the orchard grass makes it easier to put up the hay, and here it will sell just as food as pure alfalfa.

I’m still waiting to make my first million from hay… 10yrs in it still seems a looong way away 🤣🤣. I bale about 2000 little bales and the rest in 4 band bales. I find I make as much money from big squares as little ones because of the time and fuel saved if I have to store it, then haul it out to a customer.

I’ve had both 6 string bales and 4 string bales both at 4ft long. The 4 string, 4ft long are great to push about with 2 people, the 6 string really are for machines to move but we have moved them with 4 people before but need to be fit

With large square bakers watch out on used ones which were used to bake corn stalks… otherwise they all cause issues and frequently break down.

Just hard on them….. we had a 4’x4’ and changed to a mid size but the profit was the same. Issue we had with the 4x4 was parts and break downs. The mid size usually comes with more cost of the machine. I would still avoid machine used heavily in corn stalks because the west and tear.

If your market demand is moving to the large square bales, will you get out of the small square and round bale business and move exclusively to large square bales? Yes, the large squares have to be stored quickly, but the effort to bale them is much less.
