This is outside the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo. Glimpses of the Finger Wharf can be seen in the background. There were many wharfies and tradesmen from the nearby wharves and Naval Dockyards rehydrating after a hard day's work. As a 10-11-year-old paperboy, I used to sell newspapers in the four pubs in the area in 1972-73 (Dockyard, pubs, the roadway, home deliveries). The drunks used to help me sell my papers in the pub to the rowdy patrons. They didn't spare the tips neither. In 1973 I got around $5 in tips per day and $15 from commission per week from paper/magazine sales working seven days {4 hrs morning and 4 hrs afternoon). $50 earnings per week back then is equivalent to $500, factoring in inflation. Not bad earnings, but I was ripped off, seeing that I worked 56 hours for it. My brother earned similarly
I remember when a schooner of beer was 20 cents now the average price of a schooner of beer in New South Wales (NSW) is between $8 and $12, but prices can vary by venue's a packet of cigarettes was 40 cents now a its $35.50 a packet of 20s. Peace out.
Your complaint highlights your ignorance to understanding money even on the simplest terms. $1 in the 70s = $12-13 today. So how much did you earn then compared to what you do today?
@@JustinSteele-gd5nu i don't remember making a complaint i have been retired for 15 years must know something about money you still working I had enough money to stop working when I was 62. Peace out.
Yep I gave my so-in-law $ 20 to get us both a beer down In Eden southern NSW last Christmas & when I asked if there was any change He said "Nope" they were $10 each .I had not had a beer in 11 months.
The point most were making, is that the pub is a place that relax and talk with like minded people - the atmosphere will change (and actually their mental health may suffer)! We have a worse govt right now here! 🧐
I was 13 then used to love the smell at the pub, I would sneak a swig out in the beer garden when dad and his mates weren't looking, Looks like the Wharfs at Woolloomooloo where Russel Crowe lives these days not so back in 75 , Reschs DA or Wreckers Dinner Ale, today that Middy is 5 bucks, not 29 cents. At least i could understand people back then. Cigarettes were 40 cents a packet now they are 35 dollars
I actually hate the smell of beer I drank way too many once at 16 and it was so humiliating I really learnt to hate it! I remember my aunt saying I will give up cigarettes when they get to a $1!!
My friend who worked in a bottle-o in Canberra said there was a man high up in parliament who would buy a bottle of scotch every morning before work. Explains a lot.
Cheapest I remember is $6 for a six pack, $24 for a carton. Only drank beam and coke at the pub and that was $1.60 back then and a bottle of Beam was $20 when I was 16, meant 18 sorry.
This was in the era of being taken off the gold standard and going full FIAT, borrowing currency from a private central/reserve bank. Our currency loses value every day because it is no longer backed by anything. The more money that can be printed by turning the printers on every time a government cannot stick to a budget will wreck the economy of the world.
Chris Philips coming off the gold standard was John Howard and Peter Costello idea in 1999 , How do you think Costello made a surplus in 2000 ? Sold off $ 60 billion of our Gold. !
These blokes would be horrified at todays cost. I got a shock recently when a friend wanted a glass of lemonade, (it was served from a postmix tap) and then was informed that is $5.25....are you serious???
As my old man used to say in the 60s the govt always attacks the working people Beer, Cigarettes and petrol people did smoke a lot then but it is a easy money grab, no matter the item it always affects the worker's Cheers
An Australian party that can’t spell Labour the Australian way. Struggle to vote for them. Particularly the last however many years. Don’t support the working class anymore and try to force division.
I remember when a middy of beer hit $1 . It was outrageous.
lmao every one of them was pissed and slurring
the firm

This would be the 70’s going by the ring pull pattern on the can of beer.
it says 1975
Wine is cheaper than beer
The upper class in parliament drink wine so don’t tax wine as much as other alcoholic beverages. Both main parties here are the same on that.
My friend who worked in a bottle-o in Canberra said there was a man high up in parliament who would buy a bottle of scotch every morning before work. Explains a lot.
They'd faint at the cost of a Tactical Nuclear Penguin stubbie.
33 cents a schooner. whats he complaining about it's $12 now.
and they are still taking the easy money instead of actually doing something
It was all relative to income. In 1974 I received, after tax, $60.00 for a week's work.
29c!! They are about $11 or $12 now.

Labour being against the working class even back then ffs
God save the Queen, because nothing will save the governer general.

In November 1975, the Governor General sacked the Labor Prime Minister and his govt for mis-managing the economy etc.

I wish we could do that now, but they are all in it together! 😥
The CIA were the instigators. They believed the Whitlam Government was too socialist and had to go.
Not true.
That bloke is well pissed! 😂 most drink pints these days
I rarely drink when i go out now , it is way too expensive it would cost me $200 to get as pissed as these lads at todays prices in Australia.
Interview the fox about henhouse security.
Aussie govt. keeps taxing alcohol and tobacco first because they know, after the complaining, we will eventually pay and they will get the taxes.
