The B.C. Kid name was also applied to the Game Boy and SNES releases in Europe, which I own. I first played the SNES one on the plane home from Florida in 1999! Until then, my only experience with Bonk was him being a playable character in Saturn Bomberman’s battle mode!
The PC Engine version was known as PC Kid in the UK and Europe via the grey import scene and magazines like C&VG. The name stuck when the game shifted onto other platforms in the region like the Amiga, NES and GB.

Gaming was different back then, most gamers cherished the evolution home consoles were going through. Bonk was on PAR with both Mario & Sonic.
I believe that the Turbo Grafx 16 was a combination of a 8 bits for coding processing and a secondary 8 bits for audio, so it was a 8 bit but it got to use the full resources that was otherwise a bit more consumed by the audio processing in the case of the 8 bit nintendo and therefore that is why the tg-16 had some great audio both sound effects and music thanks in the extra 8 bits.
I found that turning the turbo switch off was the more precise way to play when it came to attacking from the air, and I have a hunch the developers intended it to be that way. I got my Turbografx 16 as a birthday present from my parents (apparently the Turbo was on a clearance sale) it was my very first game console to call my own so it holds a very special place in my heart. All I had to play was Keith's Courage and Bonks Adventure and I loved them both! I admit the gameplay in Bonks is slower than people are used to but honestly, it never bothered me, even though I'd played plenty of Mario Bros. on my cousin's NES.
Would've loved to have seen Bonk on the SEGA Genesis/MegaDrive! Considering Hudson made an NES & GameBoy version of the game, I'm confident the game would've been a success in NA & Europe.
Yeah it's kind of surprising, literally every Nintendo console (NES, SNES and GB) got at least one game. Meanwhile Sega got nothing for any of it's consoles not game gear, Mega Drive/Genesis or Master system. It shows that even NEC played favorites ironically.
The funny thing is that RED, the company that developed these games for Hudson, went on to make Tempo and Sakura Wars for Sega. The latter being one of their biggest hits in Japan. Hudson made some great exclusive Saturn games, too. It's just Bonk that never made it to Sega. They stopped making Bonk games by the time the Saturn hit its stride... makes me wonder if we would have seen a Saturn Bonk if the series had lasted a few years longer.
@@loganhalsey9205 The really gut-wrenching sad part is the fact that Hudson was absorbed into Konami economy has basically done nothing outside of releasing super Bomberman R. I mean they're sitting on a ton of great franchises from Hudson (Bonk included) they could be released in a myriad of different ways and collections as well as remakes etc but they just have done nothing with it. With the exception obviously of the TG-16/PC engine mini obviously. I feel like with that Konami just literally dusted their hands and said there we go.
@@loganhalsey9205 - Considering how SEGA Genesis/Mega-Drive was a big hit in the US, the UK, Europe, Brazil & Australia, you'd think we would've seen Hudson bring Bonk to some SEGA platform at the time. If not the SEGA Saturn, then the SEGA/MEGA-CD or Genesis/Mega-Drive.
@@Guernicaman Yeah, I agree with you. They were definitely a Japan-focused company, which made Super Famicom an obvious destination for games and the American market picked up the residuals. I can understand that. But then they released Mega Bomberman for Sega, so I don't see why there couldn't have been a Mega Bonk or even Mega Zonk.
My cousin had one, so me and my brother would spend the night at his house, and play it til early morning. Games I enjoyed were Military Madness, Bones Adventure, and Keith Courage. I was waiting on the Genesis after thoroughly enjoying my Master System, and didn't wanna invest in the T16. I was holding out, reading all about the Genesis in my Sega Visions subscription. I still liked all the games he had on the T16. He was however the only person I knew who had one. He even got the CD add on when it released.
Sega did not have an early mascot platformer like this on the Genesis at launch. Bonk's Adventure was a truly addictive, fun game to play. If the TG-16 would have had a few more well known arcade properties around launch, it would have given the Genesis a run for its money, like the PC-Engine did to the Megadrive in Japan.
I didn't play Bonk's Adventure until later on in my adult life. It was a fun game but many of the frustrations you mentioned are the reason I never pushed through and completed it. I have the TG16 Mini so I might give this one a go again.
Bonk is pretty cool. I always liked that (since it was made by red company) they weren't afraid to go full on weird with their Japanese cartoony style. Also worth mentioning the AMAZING Amiga port by Factor 5 who actually cared and knew what they were doing with the hardware.
I only heard about the Turbografx for the first time in the past year or so, but it is definitely something I would be interested in, a lot of the games look really good.
i just purchased a modded trubographics 16 with a bunch of games. i absolutely love the system.. but as we all know the american version games are expensive and i wanted the cd add on. so i bought a pc engine duo and Dracula x.. im so excited and this video is perfect timing
I remember this game was out about the time the Turbo express was released and I wanted them both. Looking at that stuff in magazines thinking that's was so cool. The same game's that played on a home system also works on the portables.
Played Bonk's Adventure when it first came out on the Wii VC. Nver heard of the TG16 and was curious. It was difficult to grasp the headbutt attack at first, but I was very impressed with the game and it made me want to get a TG16 (still don't have, but some day I will)
Is the turbo grafix 16 mini gonna be re- released?? It was scheduled to come out in March of 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. Now I can't find one other than Ebay (at double the price) I was really excited about getting one. If any info is available please let me know. Thank you
oh I'm well aware.. It was one of those weekend rentals for me as kid. I tried by best to enjoy the game but it was just so janky compared to Mario II or III at the time.
Owned one of these. Bought it new from Toy's "я" Us to play Bonk, found out it came with Keith Courage in Alpha Zones instead. Wasn't a bad game per se, but really wanted Bonk. Finally played it on the NES via rental.
I picked up the TG-16 trilogy when they were on Wii VC, got both Game Boy versions, the NES game (paid $20 for a cart only copy years ago, it was not that cheap on Ebay even back then) as well as the 2 SNES games (second one was Japan only), they are fun little platformers, and by the time Bonk got to the SNES, his games were better refined. A lot of people tend to dislike Bonk 3 on the TG-16, I still find it a fun game in it's own right.
I never owned a turbografx 16 but I have played bonk's adventure though. I bought it for my wii because I use to buy alot of virtual console game's for my wii and bonk's adventure was one of the game's I bought. I liked the game though and thought it was fun. I bought it because I never played a turbografx 16 game and bonk's adventure seemed like a nice game to start with. I also played and bought bonk 2 and 3 for my wii. I liked 2 and 3 as well but my favorite out of all 3 game's is either 2 or 3. I'm not sure which it's been a while since I've played them.
Parallex scrolling was an issue the TG-16 couldn't do as well as "true" 16 bit consoles, but eventually they figured it out, but in 1990 it was very rare. Same with the NES, parallex you would see later on but most games in 1990 had none, unless they were on the Genesis or arcades. Anyway, Bonk 1 kind of fakes parallex in some levels with a scrolling moon in the background or a scrolling fortress in others.
Traded in my TG16 with Bonk and Keith Courage for a 32X w/ Virtua Racing and Doom back in the day. It was a win back then but I wish I still had it now.
The audio sounds weird at 2:48. It has an echo. In terms of the background it changes from day to night. So when you start the game it's day time, and when you go later into the game it turns to night time. It's still not satisfying, but just something interesting.
It's true the lack of native parallax layers on TG-16 was one of it's weaknesses, there is tile animation but hard to balance the image memory costs of that. Those are some tiny hit boxes in BA there I guess. :S
If I'm only going to play one Bonk game, never having played one before, and my only caveat is whichever one is the funnest/best controls/prettiest... Which one do you recommend? I've heard the super famicom sequels are really great and I know people like the Super Nintendo version as well. I do not own a turbo graphic 16 so I will be sticking to SNES and super famicom Japanese games. Thanks!
"You control Bonk and as his name implies..." Uh to a UK Person Bonk has another VERY different meaning , so that made that sentance just a little concirning for a moment o..o
First time I saw the big-headed caveman was on the SNES. It was a normal day, I went to rent a game then (I am not kidding) by a glimpse I saw bald Bomberman on the cover! But no, it wasn't Bomberman, just a kid; just because of that I rented the game. My first impression was good, the Hudson logo! The same creators of Bomberman, the game I've spent so much playing the multiplayer with my cousins! This must be good. And the game started, good graphics (better than that of SMW), good controls, good music. Most further into the first level I jump into this flower, and a giant beef comes out, I get it and my character gets gigantic! I get another and it turns into a chicken! This was one of the funniest things I saw in a game, and it continued trough the rest of the game; insanity after insanity. I really recommend Super Bonk for anyone who wants a new or insane platform.
Try out B.C. Kid vor the Amiga, if you looking for a Bonk Version with a bit better looking. It is not super superiro to the PC Engine Version, but is a tiny but more detailes in my eyes.
It's funny; I like Bonk, but actually prefer Keith Courage by a good sight. My 6 year old son adores Bonk. All three of them. He often says how he can't wait to grow up and get his own PC Engine Duo with Bonk's Big Adventure and Gradius II. The Gradius II part warms my heart. I prefer the first Bonk of the original TG16 trilogy. It's a bit less refined, but I like the stages better.
Bonk was up there with Mario and Sonic in my book.

I started playing the Bonk Series about two months ago, Imaybe it's just me, but I think it inspired a lot of platformers, included Yoshi´s Island 1:36 that animation looks a lot like that one when Yoshi morphs...
Harsher than I expected, but fair. The PC Engine/TG-16 is very much an underrated system with many great titles. The price of admission can be a bit pricey, but an Everdrive fixes that problem. The PC Engine system itself really isn't much more expensive than an NES or SNES. Yeah, I'd recommend just getting a PC Engine over a TG-16 as the games are cheaper and the hardware is smaller & nicer looking. Plus you can get the CoreGrafx that has Composite output built in. The best games are for the PC Engine CD tho, so if you can afford it then getting a Duo or Duo-R is definitely the way to go! Luckily it has no copy protection so burn away!

I admit the gameplay in Bonks is slower than people are used to but honestly, it never bothered me, even though I'd played plenty of Mario Bros. on my cousin's NES.
The PC Genjin name is a pun on PC Engine. I recommend GTV Japan's video all about the names
Awesome review as always man!
Meanwhile Sega got nothing for any of it's consoles not game gear,
Mega Drive/Genesis or Master system.

The really gut-wrenching sad part is the fact that Hudson was absorbed into Konami economy has basically done nothing outside of releasing super Bomberman R.
The sequels are better, but the original still has a lot of charm to it.
One of my most fav game series ever! I loved the one released on GameBoy too.
Good old youtube never showed this on my sub feed. Randomly showed up on home screen.
i just purchased a modded trubographics 16 with a bunch of games. i absolutely love the system.. but as we all know the american version games are expensive and i wanted the cd add on. so i bought a pc engine duo and Dracula x.. im so excited and this video is perfect timing
I remember this game was out about the time the Turbo express was released and I wanted them both. Looking at that stuff in magazines thinking that's was so cool. The same game's that played on a home system also works on the portables.
The NES version looks amazing
Played Bonk's Adventure when it first came out on the Wii VC. Nver heard of the TG16 and was curious. It was difficult to grasp the headbutt attack at first, but I was very impressed with the game and it made me want to get a TG16 (still don't have, but some day I will)
Is the turbo grafix 16 mini gonna be re- released?? It was scheduled to come out in March of 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic. Now I can't find one other than Ebay (at double the price) I was really excited about getting one. If any info is available please let me know. Thank you
Bonk was the Mario or Sonic of the Turbo!
The NES version doesn't play as smooth. It's a novelty, but there's nothing outside of that for playing that version.
oh I'm well aware.. It was one of those weekend rentals for me as kid.
I tried by best to enjoy the game but it was just so janky compared to Mario II or III at the time.
Love this game! I still have my Turbo Express and all of my games.
Owned one of these. Bought it new from Toy's "я" Us to play Bonk, found out it came with Keith Courage in Alpha Zones instead. Wasn't a bad game per se, but really wanted Bonk. Finally played it on the NES via rental.
Bonk is & will always be The TGFX16 mascot for me too.
@7:11 am I looking at a quadriplegic triceratops?
The Snes Bonk is a crazy, drug filled trip.
Great work!
Damn, a new video for half the ride home from work... Sweet.
The audio sounds weird at 2:48. It has an echo. In terms of the background it changes from day to night. So when you start the game it's day time, and when you go later into the game it turns to night time. It's still not satisfying, but just something interesting.
I wanted a tg16 so bad from the commercials of this game alone.
Now I need to get the Analogue Duo, since I already have both the Super Nt and Mega Sg. 16-bit wars is awesome. 😀
It's true the lack of native parallax layers on TG-16 was one of it's weaknesses, there is tile animation but hard to balance the image memory costs of that. Those are some tiny hit boxes in BA there I guess. :S
I wish the Bonk series rised to the heights that the Kirby series had.
Thanks!
Where would a guy go to find some of the Japanese imports u jam on for the genesis..ebay??..any help out there would be much appreciated..thanx..
I love this game. In my top 5 of all time. Many games have come after that have more but ot was the time and place for this one
08:44 Dat smug dinosaur though...
When Air Zonk? Best cute em up ever!
I love my tg16 and duo. There's a lot of games that didn't have parallax scrolling. Even ports of games that did on other systems
Bonk was up there with Mario and Sonic in my book.
I started playing the Bonk Series about two months ago, Imaybe it's just me, but I think it inspired a lot of platformers, included Yoshi´s Island
1:36 that animation looks a lot like that one when Yoshi morphs...
This was showcased at the mall.I really wanted to play but I wanted a genesis. Never got one.
I've got the gameboy game, which is surprisingly fun. It comes in a tin can package.
Excellent 8-bit machine.
What about the GameCube remake?
I hope you'll review the sequels!!
I Loved this game, on TG16. .. :-) .. .. Blazing Lazers is super good also!
BEST port of Klax, too!
Bonk for Smash! Seriously.
Bonk, Crash, and Earthworm Jim are my 3 most wanted Smash characters. And none of them will ever happen.
It definitely looks like an NES game. It’s no wonder Nintendo ruled the gaming world for so long.
"It definitely looks like an NES game."
Except it definitely doesn't. Get your eyes checked.
