I have been a big fan up the 27th Lancers since their Inception today is September 28th 2024. Foreman member of the Long Island sunrises, 1964 through 1968 Brooklyn New York 1960 1961 snare drummer this video brings back great memories❤❤❤❤
First saw them on PBS broadcast in 1975. I loved the music and the color guard. I went on to teach guard in 1976 and realize how much this guard influenced my early teaching. I love watching these videos because of the memories they bring to mind.
After 14 years of drum corps the 11 minute mark of this video was my swan song---I was crying like a baby knowing this was my last show---thank you George and Patsy for all you did to make the 27th Lancers a huge part of my life Two Seven for ever
Unfortunately DCI has never promoted senior Drum Corps activity there used to be many throughout the country especially in the east when I was in junior Corps Floyd Bennett golden eagles I couldn't wait until I turn 21 to join the Long Island sunrises and that's how most Junior chorus members thought at that time
I remember watching this on Bands Of Gold on channel 4 iin the UK donkey's years ago and thinking what a class guard and I haven't changed my mind 37 years later!
My godmother took me to my first drum corp show in Lynn a long time ago....I'm 52 so a long time ago. Fell in love instantly was in Jr and high school marching band..gotta say we were amazing and the pride of Virginia beach. I played flute and was sick of always performing behind the brass section so my senior year I switched to mellophone and loved it. So Feb of 1983 I flew to Boston for the weekend and thought I was gonna freeze to death. EVERYBODY THAT WAS AT THAT CAMP WAS AMAZING. I FLEW HOME and sometime in march I got the call of a teens life..they wanted me. Omg of course I cried and then I made one of the most regretful decisions of my young life. The corp wanted me to be up in mass sometime in may or beginning of June of course for camps and tons of practice. I could not believe what fell out of my mouth. I said "oh no if I join the corp I'll miss my prom and graduation" I have regretted that decision to this day. That was such a dingbat girly response to the chance of a lifetime. Still love DCI and love and appreciate what every corp member , staff and volunteer do to make drum corp competitions the most exciting events ever.
we were the 1st to do asymetrical drill in 1980 in our opener and 1981 at the end of niner two---and 82 at the end of the drum solo---however 27th was the 1st to do it
And flags and rifles appear to be wearing the same uniforms. Finally. I can't imagine any self-respecting marching musician/guard member not wanting to be in 27th back then.
i get that his shots weren't always the best from a drum corps purist POV, but for me from an overall artistry/effect POV, i actually really like Steve's direction. imo his closeups of individual MMs capture the emotions in a great way. just my opinion.
@@Mark-sj3xb I believe the company DCI hired for those 2 years (maybe just 83, but 84 is similar) had no idea what drum corps was and just didn't absorb enough in time. Looking back, a lot of the broadcasts are pretty bad. Like EVERY SINGLE corps in 79 was shot and shown according to the "if it's a rifle line, show it" edict.
Yeah tommytimp, the vids back in the 80s and maybe even 90s kind of sucked from a production standpoint. Things improved some much with Tom Blair's crew.
+steve hage we were thinking top 5 drums and please dont change the music and drill yet again! mustve learned 3 shows that year! this corps was perpetually exhausted and the portions of the staff was unsettled. Also, new scoring that year had numbers really low which hurt morale. Drill was supposed to have been added to the end of the show but by the time we had baked in the Miami sun all day it was decided to just leave it be. The corps I think was ready to do it, most of us... There were many rhythmic parts of the music that were watered down to boring half notes bcz it wasnt being executed. The show could have been better, credit to the strong members for attaining finalist status with all they went through. We broke down on the way home from Florida. smh... a good year to learn that life is hard but dont quit. ENDURANCE! it's why the DL could play 33 counts of singles at 150+bpm at the show's end. I was a quad.

I sort of miss the Beefeater bearskin hats in the rifle line...but I;m sure they were happy to be shod of them.

Maybe it was still their worst show but still enjoyable.
Well...the musical "Camelot" really isn't the best source for the field show.
