I used to love it when my Uncles and older cousins would hand check me in the backyard (late 80s and 90s). I would simply grab their wrist to get them off balance as I drove by them. They hated that lol.

I’m 42, played ball for 33 years, and been watching the NBA for 35. I was 6’4 185 at age 13 when I dunked my first basketball and was playing street ball against grown men. Imo.. modern NBA players are superior in every way compared to players from the 80s and 90s. Which is why defense is so different now, every player on the court is an offensive threat from any range.

Gil I have to counter your argument...I am an old head but I think the hardest defensive error isna two sided argument. First, rules allowed for rough play and a little bit of fighting and that resulted in a personal foul and maybe a 1 or 2 game suspension. But back then they had more movement and team play. There was a reason starters averaged double digits for the top tier teams back then. In the 2000s the game progressed to a superstar on a team i.e. you with the wizards and that resulted in people suddenly in roles vs flowing in a team structure. So if you were off scoring went down because you didn't have people who could pick up the pieces...unlike if Kareem was off you still had magic, Scott, Worthy to pick up the scoring...so the overall avg would be higher even in the quote unquote tougher time period

The non-shooters are defensive wings now because teams roster them to defend the downhill guards Gil is talking about the way squads rostered extra big men to defend the elite bigs of the time. Much fewer non shooters but the dynamic still exists.

If everyone wants to shoot why don’t you just get rid the 3 second rule and bring hand checks back since everyone is an elite ball handler. I see so many clear push offs on offense now the offense is basically hand checking the defense.

I think the 2000s averaged less because the average players coming in the league sucked and lacked fundamentals and a decent jumpshot save for a few good players. I think there is no question that the quality of players nowadays is worse than it was going back in the days. Their athleticism is much better but their fundamentals sucks and they can barely shoot a midrange.

Nothing to do with rules, forget this hand check bull shit. Players don't take pride in defence now, they don't want to be beat even though they are playing there hardest. Thing is good offence will beat good defence but if you play 100 d and offence plays even 99 you have a chance. Main difference people these days are more scared of looking bad for being them selves (different) and giving 100 d and be beat by 100 o it's sports. Go hard all game and you have the best chance!
